I was not expecting to be impressed with the make over on the M&P. After it pretty much looks the same as the original M&P Series, reviewed in TNP in 2009. But if you shoot the S&W M&P40/9 "M2.0" and you too may become a believer. First Smith and Wesson fixed the trigger. While the M&P trigger was never awful it always felt disconnected and its unpredictable break often led to errant shots. I sold my own Gen 1 M&Ps because of this. This Mod 2 trigger breaks crisper and it seems easier to shoot the pistol well with it. Secondly the gun is stronger. S&W puts in a full SS sub-frame into the M&P M2.0, eliminating frame and accessory rail flex. This does add some weight; most won't care. A POU discussion on SAWC achievements of competitors is included in the vid. Third the laser stippled grip is perfection; gobs of traction on a previously slick handgrip. In FDE coloration the gun looks cools too. More is shown and discussed in the desert and indoor range shooting of our M&P40 M2.0 testbed. We still like the power of good ole .40 S&W. In the end intangibles and intangible of the M2.0 add up to a much improved M&P experience. Highly recommended by TNP.
Add: Safety lever can be easily removed and holes capped!

nutnfancy I agree. Trigger is very nice. I carry a Glock every day but damn does the 2.0 feel good. Grip trigger everything. Prices are gonna drop significantly on the original. My LGS had three used ones and they dropped price $50 or $60 I believe since the release. Sold quick then.

nutnfancy if you do decide to keep the pistol you can actually remove the safety selector lever and if you contact S&W via email they will send you the plugs for the slots where the selector lever goes. There are people who've done that already.

Totally easy to do, although there is a little sear spring that if you get overly casual will pop out. I've only had it happen when I take the whole block out. You only have to lift the block up to get the safety bar out.

Be careful comparing these 9mm to the 40 on weight. The M&P2.0 9mm is on only 26.9oz FYI. which makes it better than some of the comparisons you did have. Thanks for the great review!

I bought this gun about a month ago. Right out of the box it was a dream. It feels more natural in the hand then ANY other pistol I've EVER shot. I love it. It's also dead on at 25 yards I can free hand a complete clip into the head shot area. Every1 who see's and shoots it they all love it and want one. Bought mine in FDE with the 5 " barrel and it's awesome the trigger is so smooth.

S&W is coming out with a M&P 2.0 that will be the same size as a G19 (15 rd capacity). Don't confuse the new M&P with a 15 round mag. That model is the same size as a full size but with a 15 rd mag for those non-free states. I think when the new frame size M&P comes out (Due around Sept/Oct 2017), it's going to be a great seller. Many people have stated if S&W produced a M&P that's the "same size" as a G19...they would EDC the M&P. Well Smith has heard the masses.

The safety won't engage accidentally if you ride your strong side thumb on top of it.......and leave it there. That is the standard technique when firing a 1911.

so i was in the market for my first handgun, the local gun shop had a used first gen (pretty much just carried a lot, insides were fine) for 350 and a new 2.0 for 550. i went with the first gen being a broke college kid. im very happy with it, never any problems with jamming or trigger control. i will probably upgrade in the future when i have the funds. my philosophy is tho if you dont have the right mindset or shooting ability it doesnt matter what you have so i try to focus on that instead of just top of the line gear

Holstering my shirt along with the pistol is what scared me away from conceal carrying a glock or a manual safety-less striker fired weapon. I actually did catch my shirt just on the trigger, thankfully I felt something wasn't right and didn't try to slam the gun home. Before I carried a glock I carried a 1911 so a *good* swipe safety doesn't bother me.
@chrisf247
@chrisf247 6 лет назад
This is actually one of the reasons I like the glock style trigger safety over the M&P. M&P seems far more susceptible to the trigger getting pulled by a shirt tail in a holster. There are relatively cheap replacements for just the actual trigger though.

I've owned this exact pistol (with Trijicon HD night sights) for a couple months now and it's been 100% reliable after around 600 rounds. It shoots very flat for a .40 (especially with 165 grain loads) and is just so controllable. I can stack rounds with relative ease. I absolutely love this pistol so much and I recommend it to anyone looking to buy a full size striker fired pistol.

I started competition shooting with my m&p 1.0. I did change out the trigger and put talon grips on it to make it a competitor and rose up the rankings with the m&p and eventually moved on to CZ shadow 1 and 2. Didn’t care for the 2.0 until 2022. They have a metal frame version which i bought and waiting for delivery. Stoked.

The "cut outs" that show the stainless steel insert in the frame, are formed by stand offs in the injection molding process. Those stand offs in the mold, locate or hold the SS insert in place while the polymer is being injected under high pressure. It's a nice design feature but is a necessary function of the molding process. They just made them match the styling of the gun in that area so it would look like an intentional attribute to the guns overall appearance.

I prefer the safety equipped m&ps after owning and shooting both - the safety is the perfect thumb shelf for my grip. So when the new Compact came out I ordered the safety version. Love the 2.0 upgrades, but I would happily take a gen 1 gun in almost any flavor. The trigger is an improvement but could still be better. And the forward cosmetic serrations could go away. If you don't like the safety remove it. Smith will send you frame plugs for free and removing the safety takes 5 minutes.
@ProGunsZach
@ProGunsZach 7 лет назад
I get that they are technically better than the original M&Ps, but I love mine and I have no intention of getting rid of them to get these. Plus, since I have the .45 models, the first gens have the better forward serrations.

You can buy one of these plus the apex trigger for less than the price of a ppq m2. The ppq will be more accurate and my confidence in its reliability is higher, but it has noticeably snappier recoil with more muzzle flip.

I noticed the two stage trigger on gen 1 m&p's as well. I took my sear assembly apart and noticed the sear has a dual angle engagement surface. What I did was use some 800 grit sand paper and a flat surface and remove the dual angle and smooth everything out. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. No parts were swapped, just some minor smithing of factory parts. It still had some take up, but once you engage the sear, buttery smooth. The articulated trigger has been getting a lot of criticism, but from my experience the source of the problem is the dual angle sear.

Hey Nutn', I agree this new version is pretty sweet and I like it better than the previous model, which I liked as well. I am a big Glock and HK guy, but I love CZ and S&W as well. By the way, for the first time I noticed that it seems you are left eye dominant same as me. If so, you may want to try canting the gun to the left slightly over to get the sights in line a little more without turning your head as much. This comes in handy when shooting around barriers or walls as you expose less of your head. Thanks for the great reviews and keep up the great work! God bless man!

@cavscout888
@cavscout888 7 лет назад
Hey Nutn! A couple important things. Instead of grinding off the safety levers, the design is VERY modular and S&W actually has plugs. you just pull the safety lever out and replace it with plugs that hold one thing in all the way, and fill the gaps in the frame. Also, the magazine disconnect and that little sear disconnect lever in the mag well are both easy to remove. Again the design is modular. Both of those features are held on the same pin, which can simply be floated out and all of the parts removed. No need to even put the pin back in.
@cavscout888

In total, I've deleted one magazine disconnect, four sear disconnect levers, and one manual safety. Sadly I Dremel'ed off the safety lever pads on my Shield. Only found out about the plugs later.

Hey Nutn. Was flying into and out of Salt Lake City this past week and weekend for some snowboarding. While flying in I kept looking out the window of the plane trying to guess which area you go to shoot in the field. Dang it was cold and snowy and hard to breath because of the altitude. Love the channel and love the reviews. The front end of this gun looks like a Springfield cod series and the grip stippling looks like a copy of a recent review you did on the Taurus millennium g2. The part that looses me is the same thing you touched on which is the curved trigger guard. I prefer the glock or Springfield trigger guards which allow me to get a good finger grip on it for added stability

CHP's new official side arm, is the 40 cal M&P 2.0. Again another department apparently sticking with the 40. CHP is replacing their old S&W 59 series 4006 Tactical S&W (11 round brick), with the M&P, another nice choice. I feel sorry for them schepping that brick around for the past 26 or 27 years. I doubt anyone will elect to keep their 4006 TSW. The FNS is truly ambi all the way. I am seeing more and more S&W M&P on duty belts and less and less Glock. No one complains, but I occasionally get some positive or negative comments about my old Sig P228R. Anything negative becomes either positive or a sour grapes issue, as mine has a modified Gray Gun Legion trigger, E squared grip, polished plated springs and Dawson custom sights.
@Satchmoeddie
@Satchmoeddie 7 лет назад
I can't say which one, but one department bought Glock gen 4 22s and dumped them ALL before EVER issuing them. Glock FAILED their testing. Hint, the gun maker that they chose fixed a minor problem with mounting lights & lasers, causing reliability problems. Glock was slow to admit there was a problem so all the new Glocks were dumped.

Another thing I've found if you push the front of the frame under the muzzle downward (so you don't push the slide out of a battery) fairly hard while measuring you get a much more consistent trigger pull weight with that type of gauge.
@jamesbreen7394
@jamesbreen7394 7 лет назад
James SEMO yea but 2lbs variance is quite a bit. Not only does mine pull light but it feels much lighter than a stock Glock trigger for example. It's pretty good. I have the Apex sear just haven't installed it yet. They claim 4lbs so I'm excited to see.
@coyotebrown2294

That will be interesting! Not sure if that will make it super trigger or if the extra work on the 2.0 will just mean less of an improvement compared to the old model? Please let us know when you get it in and try it out.

Hey Nutn!!! don't mill of the safety!!! contact Smith & Wesson telling them you were accidentally engaging it when shooting and they will send FDE frame plugs that fill in the slots for free. I had the same problem with mine and they did, took about 2 weeks to get them and fairly easy install.

You can remove the thumb safety from the the gun and get frame plugs from smith to fill in the holes. Call Smith and order the plugs!

I would like to politely disagree. I understand that a manual safety is an extra step. An extra step is a good thing 99.999% of the time. That being said, I also understand that 0.001% when it’s a bad thing is literally life and death important. That and it’s another thing to fail on the gun. I still want it. The best safety is between your ears but if that were to glitch, a manual safety can also be a life saver. Just some thoughts.
@RJT80

@@CoordinatedCarry Exactly. Human beings are not perfect no matter how hard we might try or train. There have been enough 'trigger safety' accidents to show that. We used to train-in the extra split second to utilize a thumb safety but Glock sold people on the 'finger is your safety' concept. Whatever. I've seen too many people who put far more rounds down range than I ever will, be victim of that concept. We preach muscle memory but now demonize the split second it would take to manipulate a physical safety. It's a meme at this point. It's illogical. It counts on this fantasy where that split second is the difference.

rjcass33 I disagree with you on that. I hate safeties on hand guns reason I say that is I’ve trained in a high stress situations and I never flipped the safety off when I began firing. I’ve also have situations where I’ve flipped the safety back on, 1911s are the most dangerous handgun to yourself because A you could never even turn the safety off or B you can flip the safety back on. I’m not a Glock fanboy I like all guns except for XDs and those hateful hi points, but Glocks have the best system for high stress situations just pull the trigger and it shoots. Also safeties are a mechanical devices that can fail, again Glock sold people on the practice of your finger is the safety. The only time I would recommend a manual safety is if you are one of those retards that appendix carry.

Really good review. But two things I noticed. The gun recoiled a lot more in your hands than it did compared to the other shooters. And you shoot right handed but are left eye dominant with your right eye closed? You don't or can't shoot both eyes open? This is just an observation and was wondering why. Either way, you shoot well this way.

The whole grip angle controversy came from people who wanted to shoot a 1911/Para/2011 in competition, but wanted to carry something completely different because they knew, deep down, that their competition pistol wasn't practical or combat reliable.

I had a M&P 9 since 2010, it was my first pistol. It's my nightstand gun and IWB CCW pistol. I love it and I never touched the trigger, I only added tritium night sights. I wanted a FDE M&P 9 and this 5" inch version is the ticket, I will probably wait for the red dot ready model.

NutNFancy I love your channel. Just wanted to tell you just in case you didn't know that you don't have to Mill the Safety off . That monstrosity of a safety lever can be removed all together and you can get plugs from Smith and Wesson to fill the holes up. And after market websites carry the delete safety plugs as well however Smith and Wesson will ship you the plugs for free

I honestly didn't encounter any problems with my Gen 1 M&P45 trigger and I love the pivot on that trigger! I often get great shots really easily without the hassle and problems and the grip is just right in the texturing and stability for my hands. Great to hear that there are some improvements with the 2.0 version and I appreciate what you pointed out in this version. If the more textured grip isn't obnoxiously uncomfortable like a porcupine with barbed wire, **cough*Glock*cough*Springfield1911*cough** I'll look into it and see how it goes. :)

I still like the ‘gen1’ especially for the look of the beaver tail...first it marks the polymer gun that showed how S&W really established their presence in the polymer market plus its the gun of Nick Fury.🤷🏻‍♂️. The 2.0’s are really cool too especially in 4 inch and less models. I just wish the full size and longslide models had retained the beavertail

I bet the safety is just like the original m&p ambi safety model. With the originals the rear frame pin can be removed and the sear pack can come out and the safety just taken out. Smith probably could even supply the inserts like they did for the gen 1.
@chrisloUSA
@chrisloUSA 7 лет назад
I think S&W need to do a greater redesign on the M&P 45, the thing only holds 10 rounds. You can get 13 rounds on the Glock 21 and 15 rounds on the FNX 45. Yes, you can get a 13 round magazine for the M&P 45 but look how long the grip is compared to the Glock 21/FNX 45. They need to get more rounds in the same amount of space. I would also love to see a M&P 10mm pistol.

I think S&W just put the pro series triggers in the 2.0. I have 2 pro series guns both with light crisp triggers audible and tactile resets. Like a Glock, buy the .40 and get a conversion barrel to 9 mm. Just put a Stormlake barrel in my 5 inch .40 and it works perfect.

You need to do an update video of the M&p 2.0. The model in this video was the one submitted to the army for their handgun trials. The standard does not have thumb safety’s nor does it have the loaded chamber indicator.

Did you weigh this side by side with the 34? I noticed you said it's significantly heavier, but it is rated at 26.9oz by S&W (9mm) and the Glock is rated at 25.95oz. Neither company specifies with or without a mag. In 40, the Smith is rated 27.4oz and the glock 35 is rated 27.53oz
