This out of the box review takes a look at the Triton TPT125 Planer/Thinknesser. I'll show you what's involved with the setup and how to get started with this tool. This is a 12 1/2" width capacity planer that retails for under $400 so I was curious to see how it would stack up as a good entry level planer for those who are getting started in woodworking.

Your the first reviewer i found who took the time to fit the dust extraction to the machine. The others just let the machine chuck shavings out everywhere. So well done.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. Yeah it seems easier than having to vacuum up from the floor after. 😃. Glad you found it helpful. Stay safe.

I've used mine a few times now. What I have noticed is considerable snipe.
@mattyburrows9059
@mattyburrows9059 3 года назад
you will never eliminate snipe fully as this machine only does the second step in a 3 step process..but more on that in a moment... there is a guy that makes a table for it that reduces snipe. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FwWl8rI6Cms.html . this gives less snipe...there is a better version here where the machine is fixed to the table jig ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Eadz-uNuD-4.html if you measure from the edge of the machine to where the roller is ..thats where the snipe is..so people use a scrap piece of wood before and after .. the scrap wood takes the snipe instead of your work..i do realize you need a new piece of scrap everytime but even the most expensive machines with spiral cutters still give snipe..thats why alot of people use a drum sander to finish it off....are you also using a jointer first(surface planer)..if you do not use one first to square 2 edges the thicknesser planer will just flatten the bow of the wood when it hits the rollers..they will squash it flat to the bed and then the machine makes the cut and when the piece of wood comes out of the machine and off the rollers the wood will curl up again..so to square wood you need a surface planer and then it needs to go through a thicknesser and then a drum sander and the sander needs a good extraction or dust sits on the work and on the belt and you will not get an accurate finish..so you have a thicknesser but need a planer,drum sander and extraction or you are pissing in the wind and you will have snipe and not perfect wood..there is no short cut..i have the same issue..i will use it for a few guitars but £2000 just to make wood square sounds like extortion..its that or get highly skilled with a plane. but a plane is £200 for a no7 and you need a few and alot of practice wood..i would probably get through forest before being good enough..so its cheaper to buy the machines..but when you say out loud .."it costs 2k to make wood square"..you then try to convince yourself..i can make furniture guitars and anything from wood..would you ever buy a kitchen or piece of furniture ever again? still fuckin expensive

@@mattyburrows9059 That's a damn fine tip. I've saved that video for when I get the time to build that jig.

I've literally just bought and reviewed one of these myself. Thought I'd see what you thought of it as well. Like you I'm happy with it. A good bit of kit at a fraction of the price of the bigger brands. Where's that accent from Neil? Sounds Aussie or perhaps a fellow Brit?

And at 6:38 I found it much easier to remove the plate (4 screws + loosen other side), take the film off then replace. Top video @Smoogville : thanks!

You'll never look at firewood the same way again matey! With a thicknesser (especially when you get a planar as well) - everything is possible to reclaim and nothing is out of bounds, including home harvested timber boards direct off the log (once they've had chance to air dry for a few years). On the walnut burning section at the end. Two solutions to that. First you figured already which is to cut it on the correct tool (bandsaw) and second, you could have done successive smaller depth passes on the table saw (before you drew the temper of the carbide in the teeth by setting fire to it!). But because its a dense hardwood, you're never going to remove that much timber (3mm kerf??) without some serious friction. You're really into whats called "re-sawing" territory with that height of timber and that's the domain of the bandsaw. Luckily of course, you've now got a thicknesser to smooth out the rough ridges a bandsaw blade leaves. But it was funny watching that out-take :-) You're going to love that thicknesser because you'll now never run out of 12-15mm stock which you've rescued from bowed 3/4" stock. great for tongue and groove panelling in all sorts of projects like planters and the like.

Yes this little guy has really opened up a few possibilities - including saw mill purchasing some affordable rough-sawn lumber. I'll have to wait for a workshop extension before a planer will fit in here though. :-)

Oh man, that is a shame - very disappointing considering the general build quality otherwise. Yeah, keep us all posted on that. It would be good to know how Triton are with customer service in these situations. Thanks for sharing.

This machine is technically a "thicknesser" (aka "thickness planer"), not a "planer thicknesser". The "planer thicknesser" is a dual action machine that can be switched between "thicknesser" and "jointer" (ake planer) in one unit. Problem is that they have different names in the UK and US which doesn't help!
