Hi, Thanks for Hanging Out!
In this video, you'll see me review the Triton TPT125 Thicknesser that I purchased second-hand about a year ago . . . spoiler . . . it's great and fantastic value for money.
I'll go through the main features and how they help get great results. Towards the end I'll share some recommendations that may help you get better results from any of these style of benchtop thicknessers.
I hope you found this review helpful. If you have any questions or feedback about the thicknesser, or would like to know something I didn't mention, please let me know in the comments.
Thank you for Watching.

Hi, Thanks for Hanging Out! You'll see here a fairly detailed look at changing the blades on this thicknesser, that will also apply to any of this style. I'll also show you how to adjust the cutter head for perfect flat cuts from one side to the other. And there maybe a few tips to help along the way as well 😆. What's the best tip you have for this or any of these style of thicknesser? I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching 👍

Great in-depth instruction for this machine. I've been *researching* for some time and watched quite a few videos on this Triton, some going back 2 and 3 years. Yours is the only one to show the other (hidden) working parts and give guidance for adjusting - if needed 👌👍. The machine has been hard to find here in the UK because of Covid-19 and holdups caused and doesn't stay in stock for too long when it does appear. #286 sub.

Super review, really love the in-depth analysis of the inner workings, such as the bar and gears system. I’m new to woodworking and considering getting one… I know it’s not a jointer, but can you get a good ‘square’ result when planing boards on their edge? Once again, thanks 👍👏
@hangingoutwithhally7463
@hangingoutwithhally7463 3 года назад
Hi Michael, Thanks for the comment and for watching. I've had excellent results in terms of how square the timber is on all 4 sides, but it's only as good as what you start with, you have to get one corner square to keep it square. I've used a jointer and a table saw to get that first square edge. Once you get the cutting head on the planer square, it cuts beautifully. I've planed two opposite sides to get a parallel piece, then cut that on the table saw to trim, straighten and square an edge, then run it through the planer on edge and it's been great. On edge, I've only ever planed down as narrow as 15mm (5/8in). Hope that helps and good luck. 😀

£250? Was that secondhand? About £380 is the best I’ve seen and I’m torn between this and the Metabo 330, which is about £50 more but is more powerful and has a locking carriage to reduce snipe

Hey Hally, useful vid here, thanks for sharing ur findings. One question I have is regarding snipe. You mentioned that one turn of the depth handle is equal to 1/16" or 1.5mm and that you do half that. I was thinking more extreme than that and doing 1/8th of a turn so roughly 0.2mm or 1/64" with the theory being that it would reduce snipe to the point that you could just sand it out afterwards without noticing, what do you think? Not got this machine but close to buying it.
@hangingoutwithhally7463
@hangingoutwithhally7463 Год назад
Hi Baz, thanks for watching and the question. In my experience of using it, smaller cuts do help reduce it, but not as much (in my experience) as you would think, the issue is the final feed roller not having enough tension to hold the workpiece down against the table as opposed to the depth of cut. I got the best result by tinkering with the bed flatness and that helped a lot, I've also seen people also use a larger flat board of melamine that also helps. Personally I'm not that keen on that as it takes away the lip on the side of the bed that can help guide your workpiece. I hope that helps, cheers. 😀

Nicely presented video. Do you think I would need a planer as well as the thicknesser so that I can give my timber 2 flat edges at 90 degress to each other before putting them through the thicknesser or can I make do with just the thicknesser?
@hangingoutwithhally7463
@hangingoutwithhally7463 Год назад
Thank you and thanks for watching. Whether you need a planer too, depends on how precise you want/need the final pieces. You can make jigs for a thicknesser that can hold timber square that can do a very good job, and even if you already have a good table saw and can get two edges at 90deg, then you wouldn't need a planer as well. If you were gluing up pieces for a table top, then a planer will improve the finish as you can get it perfect. Hope that helps, cheers. 😀

Good informative video. You sound like me ! I understand that this machine is excellent value for money, but must be used carefully and within its limits.. Its for the DIY man or light trade use.. If you want to go into business manufacturing hardwood window frames then you must spend thousands and not hundreds ! I will be purchasing one of these machines in due course.

Hi John, thanks for watching and the great comment. I agree, I think tools can sometimes get a bad wrap because they aren't understood and used within what they are designed for which is important to understand when you get them. You're spot on in that if you wanted to hog away material on hardwood for hours on end, then you need a commercial machine. I'm really impressed and happy with this machine, it does everything I want it to, cheers. 😀

Hi, I was looking for some new blades for this and one website suggested you can sharpen them but as you can't adjust the depth of protrusion, I assume they are wrong. Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated.
@hangingoutwithhally7463
@hangingoutwithhally7463 3 года назад
Hi Joseph, Thanks for watching, appreciate it 😀. You can sharpen the blades, although because you can't adjust the protrusion, the sharpening needs to be the same on each blade and on each side of each blade, this is the tricky bit to get right and what would deter most people. Also as the protrusion is fixed and there is only a small protrusion to start with around 1/32" or 0.8mm. I would expect you could only sharpen them once or twice before you would run out of room and need to replace them. I don't have an accurate enough set up to try sharpening them myself and because they are about $18-$19 per pair on Ebay, I've bought new ones 😁. Hope that helps. Cheers.

Must be rather unlucky but I've had 3x from brand new & all became faulty after a few hours of operation, which utterly sucks because it really made a good impression on the first try. Whats annoying, that it was all soft wood (dry pine) & with not much to remove - what is wrong with the batch they sold in france? 😞

Hi, can you please tell me how much the distance is between the infeed and outfeed rollers? I'm just wondering what the very minimum length of workpiece is that you can put through without risks. I know that the manual says 380mm, but I believe it's shorter in reality
@hangingoutwithhally7463
@hangingoutwithhally7463 Год назад
Hi there, thanks for watching and the question. I haven't measured it directly, but it's about 200mm or 8in. You will also have to take into account that on each end of a piece so short you'll get snipe of around 50mm or 2in, so consider that when working out what you want to do. I try to machine up long lengths and then cut them to size, I find that is far more consistent and less wasteful. Hope that helps, cheers. 😀
