In this video Smudge attempts to create a longer lasting mail box post. As good as the commercially available ones are, their design is not as robust as it could be. So there's always an advantage to making your own with a few refinements that should make it stronger and longer lasting. In this episode I'll show you how I approached the challenge of a longer lasting mail box post.

Excellent project matey. Loved the hand chopped mortise of course. One technical question I have, you used gravel to bed the post in right? Did you not use any concrete at all? Was the aggregate just gravel and gravel alone? If so, wont the post become unstable over time as there's some give in it isn't there?

Thanks for the great quesation Byoomie me ol’ matey. Just pea gravel and no other additives. A trick I learned from our first celebrity hero of woodworking Norm Abrams. He did an episode on the very same subject - but of course with way more awesomeness - “we’re not worthy etc.” and at the end talks about the benefits of gravelling instead of concreting in a post. Who knew right? But I’ve been using the trick ever since and nothing fell over yet. And wierdly over time it gets stiffer in the hole - not sure why - I guess the stones settle.

@@smoogleville8201 well that is really something because apart from anything else, its easier isn't it. Would that hold up a fence post do you think?
