This is part 8 of the SPRING IS IN THE AIR Tour by MV Lady Liselot.
Yesterday (28-02-2022) I was moored between the fishermen of Bruinisse because I had to arrange something in Bruinisse. The neighbor said no one was going to leave, so I could just lie down. That is why I can pass through the Grevelingen lock in daylight and find a very empty Grevelingen lake. According to the AIS info there are at most 2 other ships on the lake. I had heard that Stampersplaat is a nice island, so I sail there to judge it with my own eyes.
Nederlands:
Weet je dat Nederlandse ondertiteling aan kan zetten? Doorgaans zo'n 4 uur nadat de video is gepubliceerd. Klik op de video, en kies uit de iconen die rechtsonder verschijnen dan voor [ondertiteling] en kies daar voor Nederlands. Dan wordt zelfs mijn Engels (knap he van RU-vid) vertaald naar Nederlandsch.

Gisteren (28-02-2022) ben ik tussen de vissers van Bruinisse aangemeerd omdat ik iets moest regelen in Bruinisse. De buurman zei dat niemand zou vertrekken, dus dat ik rustig kon blijven liggen. Daarom kan ik bij daglicht door de Grevelingensluis en tref ik een heel leeg Grevelingenmeer aan. Volgens de AIS info zijn er hoogtuit 2 andere schepen, op het meer. Ik had gehoord dat Stampersplaat een leuk eiland is, dus daar vaar ik naar toe om dat zelf eens met eigen ogen te beoordelen.
Super leuk trouwens dat je deze video hebt gevonden. Ik ben Henk-Jan, en behalve dit kanaal, kan het zomaar zijn dat je mij online op nog meer plaatsen tegen komt. Ervaringen en kennis delen via bewegend beeld, blijft nu eenmaal leuk. Vind ik dan. (en jij blijkbaar ook, want anders las je dit niet)

Omdat ik veel (bootjes-)kennissen heb die in het buitenland wonen, heb ik besloten om de video in het Engels te doen. Wellicht vind je het 'steenkolen Engels', vergeef me dat dan maar, want zij die uitsluitend Engels spreken of Engels ook als 2e taal hebben, zijn al heel blij dat ze op deze manier mij kunnen volgen. Helaas betekent dit dat een aantal Nederlanders die het Engels niet machtig zijn, de video's lastiger kunnen volgen. Helaas is dat zo.
Maar, als je het desondanks toch leuk vindt, dan maak je me blij met die Thumbs Up.

Another great video. I spent two winters in Bruinisse and had my wheelhouse rebuilt by one on the boat yards. I also sailed the full length of the Grevelingen and enjoyed it very much. Whilst my wheelhouse was being rebuilt I stayed in the big hotel Aqua Delta which you might have seen. Cheers Michael

very enjoyable captain, was lovely to see your home from shoreside. I do find it amusing when you say I'm putting my rudder into neutral, as an ex navy boy we use "rudder amidships," neutral sounds a lot more fun. kind regards dave.

The funny thing is... When I started this channel 6 months ago, I had no idea how to call it, so in the heat of the moment I said "in neutral", since then it's an item in every video. Dutchies commented "it is midships", but I had recorded so many footage that I will take some time before you hear me say 'midship'. hahaha

Hello Jan, I live on a boat too in England. It is a 60 ft wide beam that is to say it is 12 ft wide. I have always wanted to live on a boat and now my dream has come true. I love your videos just one thing that would be great to add and that is if the on screen captions could have a little more time on the screen, I find myself getting to the penultimate line and I loose it. Dagse Henk-Jan, Thanks for your awesome video’s. I’m from Dutch descent and my grandfather used to operate / own a tugboat I think either in Dordrecht or Rotterdam, but that was many years ago. I have retired from sailing and my contribution for more than 10 years as a member of the volunteer coastguard unit, rescuing sailors and sailboats. Its good to see the interesting waterways in the Netherlands., keep it going. At least I understand the Dutch conversations.

Hello Andre, funny that you understand the Dutch. One of the guys who was commenting on one of my video;s is from South Africa, and when he wrote Afrikaans there were parts I also understood. It is said that Afrikaans is the Dutch from the 1800's. BTW Thank you for you kind words and that you like the content.

@@MVLadyLiselot I was born in South Africa, the only one of my sibling born there. There is a lot of similarities between Dutch and Afrikaans. I worked in Switzerland for a year and pickup German. Dutch and German I can understand, read but the speaking part is difficult because I have not practised it for a long time. Looking forward to your next video. How about you show the engine room. I like the techo stuff but I do appreciate your privacy. After all it is your "House / Home"

@@andrewessels7871 Yes, Andre. As many others I added some boat jobs, but removed those after a couple of days. There are many people who do better boat jobs, and I do not like to do them, so I will not film them any more. It does not fit the format I have: "Join Henk-Jan as part of the crew, when he is sailing MV Lady Liselot singlehanded." One could say that a walk on the isle does not fit that format either. ;-)

Smiles and greetings from the skipper…as you always do, that sets the stage for a cheerful cruise this morning. Love the walking tour of the island. Your apparel is very becoming and appropriate for the damp weather. I got a big chuckle out of the ground level view of you climbing aboard Lady Liselot towards the end of the video. It was your color-coded heels of your boots that caught my eye. Yep, green to starboard and red to port. How appropriate for a sailor!😉 Nice going Henk-Jan. I’ll be looking for your video next week while I’m at the Land Rover three day event horse trials in Lexington, Kentucky. Smooth sailing until then.

Dan, goodmorning. As you know I have a lot of footage from every day I sail. During the editing process I often have doubts about what to show and what not. I don't show a lot, because I want to maintain a certain tempo of image changes and subjects, while we are getting somewhere in the meantime. I saw that my intro was very slow, so I thought I'd continue at the same pace. Grab a coffee before leaving, and talk to you as a viewer calmly. That happens in real life too, doesn't it. I did not record that cleaning of the boots. Stepped on the swim platform on the back and cleaned them. The boots were my 'easter egg'. ;-) I saw these in the shop, laughed and bought them.

@@MVLadyLiselot Henk-Jan, you’re on a roll and doing a fabulous job. I get so much more enjoyment from watching your videos than most any others on RU-vid. They always connect with me and put me in good spirits even when my day is not so good. And just as important is the educational aspect of your videos. Where else could I get great impressions and insights of the Netherlands (if you remember, in one of your first videos I made the comment that my maternal grandfather grew up in Rotterdam and came to America in 1913…that’s a story in itself. Among other things he loved sailing and the sea.) The Easter gift to yourself is a great story and an expression of your wonderfully gifted, lighthearted personality. In my opinion your videos are a gift to all of us RU-vidrs!🙏🏻

this sort of solitude is the very reason i would love to own a trawler and cruise. the sense of peace and wellbeing in such a location must be very fulfilling. and with a yacht you can always come back to port when you desire come company. lovely.

You might as well give in now. 😆 Either that or buy (possibly a second hand) seakeeper gyroscope which has no direct drag on the water. I don't know ow if you sam my recommendation when sitting on anchor and don't know what to watch, try Jacques Tatis's film Mon Oncle or Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot. Both outstanding films. I hope you have a calm safe and pleasant night.

@@davidantill6949 Tati is special, for sure. A seakeeper is too big for Lady Liselot, and from my recent study the MagnusMaster or Rotorswing have a small footprint in the boat. Already figured out where to place them, but still looking for the 80k ;-)

Hello Frazel(?) I had some 'boat job' videos in the past, but I removed them. I stick to my format which is: "join Henk-Jan as part of his crew whilst he is sailing MV Lady Liselot" and boat jobs do not fit that format. I am not a techy, and found out that 1 boat job video results in 1001 tips and negative comments. So... this is wat you get: single handed boating.

@@MVLadyLiselot ik zag de sticker op de boot. Ik zat dit vanaf de wal t.h.v varen op de kaag dus vanuit daar kon ik het goed zien. En mijn aandacht ging ook automatisch naar je boot😁 Ik ben opgegroeid met motorjachten, maar mijn vrouw heeft helemaal niets met boten. Dus ik huur af en toe een sloep of ik ga een rondje ringvaart doen op de fiets. Ik zoek eigenlijk altijd het water op dit blijft altijd trekken. In de zomervakantie heb ik een huisje gehuurd op camping it wiid. En ja daar ligt dan ook voor mij en mijn zoon een sloepje voor de deur😀

Most of the time. When there are no other vessel I switch on the autopilot so she steers in a straight line and I can have a look on the drone-monitor. But it is as using your phone in the car: when I drive only handsfree or I do not even use it, cause it can distract easily

Onze buren zijn nu onderweg naar Zweden 🇸🇪 Wij blijven in Dordt tot Dordt in stoom , het schip wordt nog gepolijst en in de was gezet. Daarna gaan we toeren , geen idee waarheen zoals dat gaat met water sigeuners 😜

Hello Johan, so you sail laser? That is a difficult boat to handle, so 'petje af' to you also on that. Being on my own is something else then being lonely. The later is a matter of your head I think. I have some of my kids close by, and some people look after me, so I am doing really well. Besides that: I am more of a loner than a people person.

I couldnt say no, you have a new subscriber. 2 Questions, if you dont mind: What were the most beautiful/cozy Mooring places or Harbours youve been to? Why are you sailing such a big ship? I'd imagine you dont really need all that room and wouldnt a smaller one be more practical? (Concerning bridges, no ladder etc.) Thank you very much!

Best Mooring places? That depends on the weather, the people on board and the season. Let's keep it simple: I love every spot I visited. A big ship? I decided to live aboard and wanted to be able to accomodate 3 of my 5 kids, so I needed some extra room, but they did not like boating as I do.

I cannot recal anymore, but perhaps you are right. Picture this: I am just a 56 yo guy, living on a boat. A couple of months ago I decide to film the trips I have with my boat and 'thousands of people' let me know (by # of views, comments -like yourself and subscribing) that they like and even appreciate the content I produce. It feels like an 'honour' to share this part of my life in this way and it humbles me.

Neen, Ben, stuurboord blijft altijd stuurboord. ;-) Ik bestelde ze online en zag die gekleurde hakken pas toen ik ze aan boord uitpakte.

@@MVLadyLiselot nou, ik had de video nog niet helemaal bekeken en vroeg me dus af of je zomaar de stuurhut uit kunt lopen om je met de, hoe heten ze, stootwillen?? bezig te houden. Mijn vraag was hoe zit het met stroming en sterkere wind? En gelijk daarna begon je inderdaad over de wind. Dus je kunt die dingen buiten hangen als je op automatische piloot vaart óf op een plek waar het geen kwaad kan als het schip zich verplaatst. Zo goed? Ik heb weleens een video gezien waar een GPS systeem die de motoren aanstuurd het schip op zijn plek houdt. Hoe weet ik niet, want ik twijfel of ieder schip ook 2 trusters heeft en of die óók via dat systeem aangestuurd worden. Ik weet niet of je met 2 motoren het schip door voor en achteruit te laten gaan nagenoeg op dezelfde plek blijft liggen.

@@smitferdi5660 Ja, zo'n GPS-stay-in-place is een prachtige uitvinding, waarbij alle motoren aan boord telkens een stootje krijgen waardoor de boot op z'n plek blijft. Onbetaalbaar op een jacht, en nergens voor nodig. De automatische piloot stuurt of een vaste koers, of vaart een route die je van te voren hebt geprogrammeerd. Dat laatste doe ik op zee, want dat is saai, maar niet op rivieren en kanalen, dan ben je toch de hele tijd aan het corrigeren vanwege andere bootjes. Maar als ik even de stootwillen buiten ga hangen, zet ik 'm op vaste koers, en heb ik de motoren in een snelheid waardoor ik weet dat het rustig voort sukkelt. Je zag in het begin hoe snel de boot dwars gaat als het een beetje waait, maar omdat ik te dicht bij de sluis lag, ga ik daar niet varend met de autopilot naar toe. Dan lig ik d'r stil en laat ik d'r drijven, terwijl ik ondertussen de omgeving in de gaten houd. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld in deze video wél, maar in de zomer met 30 andere bootjes die voor die sluis liggen te wachten, niet. Dan ben ik veel ruimer van te voren al aan het plannen wat ik wanneer moet doen.

Thank you Richard, well it's wood and it can be opened, so 'Summer temps' will help, but I raised the 'on idle' RPM of the starboard engine with 20 and now it's over.

Hallo Harry, ja dat heeft te maken met het feit dat het elektronische hendels zijn en ik krijg ze niet goed gekalibreerd. In feite zouden beide hendels bij het zelfde toerental, steeds een vergelijkbare stand hebben, maar dat is dus niet het geval zoals je zag. Jouw vraag over het gebruik van de motoren is al zo vaak gesteld, dat ik er een standaard antwoord voor heb. Die is: There are drives which heat up during 'freewheeling'. I have "Velvet" drives and the manual states: Freewheeling: "It has been determent bij tests and practical experience that all Velvet Drive Marine Transmissions can be freewheeled without risking damage in sailing or trolling applications. Caution should be taken to be sure that proper oil level is maintained during freewheeling as well as normal running. Freewheeling one propellor on a two engine boat at trolling speed will not cause damage to the transmission connected to the freewheeling propellor."

Hallo Henk-Jan, hier Gert uit Antwerpen. Ik heb gemerkt dat jij vaak op één motor vaart als de "stuwkracht" iets minder noodzakelijk is. Draait de uitgeschakelde motor dan op traagloop of is hij volledig stil gelegd. Doe je dit alternerend en hou je daar een "boekhouding" van bij zodat het aantal draaiuren plus/minus gelijk blijft?

Hallo Gert, Als echte Ollander, redeneer ik: waarom 100% extra brandstofverbruik gebruiken voor slechts 25% extra snelheid? Gelukkig wordt de keerkoppeling gewoon gesmeerd door de ronddraaiende schroef. In de machinekamer heb ik per motor een urenteller, en iedere keer als ik ze start om te gaan varen, doe ik een korte check in de machinekamer en kijk ik gelijk op de urenteller. Daardoor weet ik ongeveer welke motor ik tijdens een tocht uit kan zetten.

Hey Terrence, Lady Liselot is from 1980. She is called a Blue Ocean Trawler build by Lien Hwa Boat Yard. She has 2x Perkins 6.354 diesel turbo engines, 175 Hp each and an Onan MJFD 12Kw genset. The trusters are MaxPower CT225.

Beetje nat? Maybe its a bit like being in outer space but well; you do go shopping to buy provisions. In your navigation, although you have GPS and AIS, I suggest you are still VFR (Visual Flying Rules versus IFR Instrument Flying Rules (aviation term)). The radar would give you more work but show you what's moving and what " je niet kan zien "?

Oeh.. havenkom, dat is een leuk Nederlands woord. Als we het hebben over een kom, of een aagesloten "ruimte" vol met water is het vaak een "basin" .. dus, je zou kunnen zeggen "the small harbour basin". Ik denk zelf dat "mooring" ookal voldoende is :)

Ja, dat is wat, Mark. Mijn Engels is al een stuk verbeterd ten opzichte van wat ik sprak in de eerste video (half december 2021), maar soms ontstaat er tijdens dat geklets kortsluiting en vraag ik me af,: "Hoe heet dat ook al weer." Enkele minuten later denk ik dan: "Oh ja, túúrlijk,". Tijdens het editten van de video bepaal ik dan of ik dat zoeken naar woorden wel of niet laat zien. Het heeft zo z'n charme, omdat je in een gesprek (In een andere taal) met iemand ook wel eens naar woorden zoekt.

@@MVLadyLiselot Je Engels is meer dan voldoende om duidelijk over te brengen van wat je denkt (en voelt). Meer hebben wij als publiek niet te wensen, en meer dan dat hoef je ook niet van jezelf te verwachten. Je ziet ook dat je respect hebt voor het vreemde en lastige taaltje wat we spreken. Je weet dat de woordenschat die we hebben vol zit met dingen waar geen directe vertaling voor zijn. En yes we speek it very well, and soms not zo snel, but we get there in the end.. don't rush me! :)

Henk, many You Tubers sell merchandise related to their channels, could you do a deal with your boot supplier to expand their "port and starboard" range? How about red and Green gloves, and socks, a "Breton cap" with a half red and half green peak? And maybe add a "Lady Lisalot" logo? Just a thought.

@@MVLadyLiselot Being brought-up in the late forties/early fifties of last century we were taught, "if you can't afford it, you can't have it". Today, everyone wants everything, and they want it now. They call it "retail therapy". With the right marketing, it appears you can sell anything to anyone and the punters don't seem to worry about debt any more. I bet there's a "port and starboard" market waiting to be tapped. Our RNLI have a "shop" selling anything that helps their donations, I'll run this by them and see what they say.

@@smitferdi5660 Ferry het grappige is dat de stuurboord motor de trilling veroorzaakte. Toen ik de bakboord motor sneller liet draaien, hoorde je het namelijk nog. In de video lijkt het andersom, maar de logica is anders. De motor liep op 630 rpm, en nu op 650 en als ze warm is 660. Dan loopt ze iets mooier.

Ja, Joris, Ik leef met je mee. Ik zou ook soms willen dat mijn leven meer actie kent, maar het is niet anders. Ik woon op mijn boot, werk 1 tot 2 uurtjes per dag op mijn boot en dan ga ik maar weer een stukje varen. Dag in dag uit. Het is heel saai allemaal.
