Hello everyone,
For this episode I wanted to do something a little different. The purpose of this kit build is to develop my design thinking around the design and assembly of etched kits generally.
I have a lot of projects on the go right now which will feature etched brass and nickel silver in their construction. A friend suggested trying a Colin Craig kit.
The kit featured in this video is for an FGA container flat wagon, and has proved really inspirational. It's been a lovely kit to out together, I'd say really easy given the massive
construction manual, which combined with some clever thinking in the design of the kit and made the process an absolute joy.
I don't think this kit is available any more, which is a shame as it really is excellent. I was grateful to get hold of one on Ebay. I believe that some of the parts, including the bogies
are available from Stenson models.

I've tried to keep my commentary to a minimum, and let the video give a flavour of the processes involved rather than waffle on.
I have consciously sped up much of the footage to cram as much in as I can, if it's too fast you can always using the playback settings function to look in more detail.
I hope you enjoy watching the video, and for those to whom etched kit construction might seem like a black art, I'd encourage you to have a go.
It really isn't that difficult, and the results are very satisfying.
Not included in the video is the parts washing process. It is essential that the soldered parts are cleaned as one progresses through the build to remove residual traces of flux. Hot soapy water and a toothbrush is all that is required. Rumour has it that the domestic dishwasher is excellent for the task.. :)
In addition to the kit, I used:

240 grit abrasive pads and various emery boards.
I also used a Foredom jewellers drill which I'd thoroughly recommend for all sorts of modelling jobs, although they are quite an investment. A Dremel would work also.

As you surmised, I wondered what on earth was going on, and I have to admit actually was almost tempted to switch this video off, after seeing the umpteenth bit of etched brass being bent, but fortunately you appeared to explain why you were building a modern container wagon! I've never done anything with etched brass, other than detail parts or fencing, so, yes, I'll admit it, it was interesting to see how it goes together with that slot and tab system. But that made me wonder - devil's advocate style - how superior etched brass is for the more structural parts to, say, using brass profiles. What I mean, is that some of what you were doing looked a bit like you were assembling what would presumably be steel profiles on the real thing: presumably reconstructing those profiles from etched brass allows for a finer, more scale result, than using brass I beams, C- or L-profiles? I remember a time when most model shops had all sorts of metal and plastic rods, profiles, tubes etc. Or is it that doing the whole thing as etched frets makes it easier for the kit designer/seller, without the need to source the profiles to go in the kit. I suppose it allows much greater control and consistency for the kit designer too. Sorry, I'm rambling.

Thank you Andrew, and sorry for all etched brass. As you will have gathered, I was keen to explore building a really well designed kit, even if the final model is unsuitable for me needs as a means of learning how the designer had thought through the many challenges. I'm certain that the wagon could be built from metal sections, although to build in that way would be more akin to scratch building. Nothing wrong with that per se, but the ease with which these wagons are fabricated from sheet parts, with almost guaranteed accuracy must certainly help folks with limited skills (of which I am one) to produce a truly finescale model. Ultimately I will need dozens and dozens of wagons and bits of rolling stock. One of the sidings alone could swallow 60 wagons and not too too full, so for me, investigating this medium is necessary. I couldn't possibly scratch build all of the stock, yet it is my ambition to have made it all. Hence exploring methods to industrialise the whole operation. :) I've got about a dozen or so wagon kits ready to go, with just the etched underframes to take care of before I hope to be able to start knocking them out like Model T fords. I've even got some interesting ideas relating to the painting and numbering of all the stock too which is why you'll not see me painting anything just yet. :) My best wishes, James

Dear James, very cool kit, love the different tools you used, grateful for the links you added. Most definitely understand the very reason why you chose to build this kit, even though it doesn’t fit the timeframe of the Bexhill West layout. With the knowledge acquired by building this kit, I’m sure you will be able to design and manufacture models that will first of all fit the Bexhill scene, timeframe and liveries. Also, am I certain you will surely come up with interesting ideas and methods to improve the design of the cars and locomotives you are planning to build. As a source of both learning, understanding and as a prompt to innovative thinking, your videos are always a pleasure to watch. Cheerio

Nice video and work as always James. Colin's kits are really well designed and go together really well, in some ways it is a shame there were/are not more available. There is one part where it pays to be a bit more "heavy" with the solder, when you are putting the box sections together on the outer channels of the wagons. Later on these box sections have holes drilled in to allow lead shot to fill the cavities. I found it's much easier to drill in with a heavy soldered joint. You may have already passed this point and not had a problem - but thought I'd mention it.

Thank you Alastair, I've really enjoyed putting this together and intend to complete the full set when time allows. The biggest challenge will be finding somewhere to run a full rake. Thank you for the advice re the box sections. I hadn't realised they were to be filled with shot - but it makes sense. I've followed your advice and made the joints really strong. I'll save that job though until I've got the first 5 completed and do them all at once. I've enough kits to do a full rake of 15 but the full set may have to be a longer-term project. Très intéressant, j’ai construits un assez grand nombre de kit laiton, quelque soit le pays la technique est la même (c’est normal!) Pour la soudure ”métal blanc” sur laiton, j’étame le laiton, puis je soude à basse température avec des soudure pour figurine. Compliments pour votre travail et vs vidéos Daniel (un frenchie!)

@@davidorf3921 therefore H0m (12mm), instead of H0e (9mm), right? As fare as I remember your are otherwise into Rhätische Bahn, so both can share track (fiddle yard and more) ;)

@@lassunsschaun6859 nope not into RHB just the WAB but then visiting the area for more than 50 years will do that to you LOL but yes probably H0m the rack there (WAB) is basically now Strub/ Von Roll (lamella) there used to be some Rigenbach (all the same pitch) but thats almost all gone now, as its far more expensive to maintain, the plan is to laser cut the rack but I will be experimenting to see just what parameters I can get away with, if it were just a straight track it would be easy but rack along a curve and changes of pitch to and from horizontal make things far more interesting, and points are a lovely complicated subject, fortunatel the WAB uses several designs and one is far more suited to a working H0 scal creation than the others.

I’ve watched you build of the etch brass underframe and saw you cleaning up the remains of the tabs with emery boards. Are these standard emery boards used to do one’s finger nails etc or are they special ones?

You do fantastic work! As you are doing quite a lot of soldering, have you tried using a hot-air soldering station? The other tool that might prove helpful is a reflow oven or plate. In fact, all may serve various tasks. This is not a one size fits all kind of thing. You may want to watch some videos on how people solder very fine surface mount components when doing repairs to mobile phones such as the iPhone. Often this work is done under a binocular microscope and requires great precision.

Do hot air guns and reflow ovens work for modelling-type soldering? I thought they were for mounting components to PCBs… a much simpler task than what James is showing here!
