Simple heater core in a box with a fan should be just fine for the heat. No need to overcomplicate it.

Generic heater core or all metal PC cooling radiator, 120mm PC fan or two, a little 3D printed bracket and duct to direct air at Jimbo, easy solution.

and ofc add a shutoff valve like old trucks cause the heater can never be turned off with a simple system without a shut off valve

Those Saturns were actually great little cars, I had 3 of them over the years and put 335,000+ miles on one. The wheel bearings seemed to be junk and would go out religiously every 100,000 miles and if you lived in a cold climate you all but had to cover the entire radiator with cardboard if you were gonna build any heat in the cab. But other than that I loved them, their 5 speed gearbox was always a pleasure to drive, I never used the clutch 👍
@averyalexander2303
@averyalexander2303 8 месяцев назад
It's interesting you mentioned blocking the radiator with cardboard in the winter because I noticed that my neighbor's grandson's Saturn SL2 didn't seem to heat up very fast and the temperature never went over 1/4 when I was test driving it on about a 20 degree day after fixing a few things so I suggested replacing the thermostat, but now I'm wondering if that's just a flaw in the design of the cooling system since you mentioned the same thing.
@minnesotatomcat
@minnesotatomcat 8 месяцев назад
@@averyalexander2303 I had 3 of them, my dad had 2 and my brother had one too and they were ALL like that. Those engines didn’t build much heat and the radiator seemed to work very well and unless you covered them up in the winter they just wouldn’t blow any heat. Never overheated In the summer though unless the electric fan quit and you didn’t notice and were sitting still idling with the ac on, then the temp gauge would start to go up a bit.

Had a Ford Festiva of 1988 carbed vintage 4 speed manual. Had to cover the radiator and only leave a 4" square in the center during these Alaskan winters just to be able to get the windshield defrosted. Tried every brand of t-stat available, 185 degree was highest available and all were the same poor heater results.

you could probably run a motorcycle radiator as a heater core. Might even be able to swing a transmission or engine oil cooler. 12V PC fans are also fairly affordable and some even have speed control if you wanna get fancy. Love your stuff! makes my Sunday morning :D

Could use just about any car heater core, 2 rubber heater core lines and 12v fan. If alternator on diesel engine is too small to power everything. Add 2nd battery & 100w solar panel on roof (mini solar system). To run the 12v fan.

Great work on the axles, Jimbo. I was thinking that instead of turning down the Honda side axle, I would have considered a sleeve with the two required inside diameters, and then plug weld it to the shafts. Likely strong enough for the Kubota. Also makes setting the required length much easier.

I would like to see a vapor car. If you put gasoline in a sealed container, add heat, and a full intake to the fuel tank, heat the entire intake all the way to the engine, you get an engine that cracks the fuel just like the oil refineries do with excellent fuel economy. Crude oil is boiled or distilled into lighter fuels when it's processed. Well the same thing happens under full vacuum and heat. Great video, as always I like ,share, and subscribe.
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 8 месяцев назад
Such 'vapour' or surface carburetion was common on very early engines. It's hard to control the air fuel ratio and the 'heavy ends' of the fuel tend to concentrate in the tank over time, resulting in ever leaner mixtures until what remains is more or less kerosene that won't vapourise. Maybe with an electronically controlled secondary intake and a lambda sensor you could fix the mixture issue, and of course a heater would allow you to vapourise the heavy ends of the fuel. Alternatively, you can convert the engine to run on LPG. The fuel is entirely gaseous already, and burns super clean. Though it is tough on the exhaust valves.

I’ve done it this Way. I’ve also just sleeved them and rosette welded. We always tig them where I worked. We cut the sleeve at a 45° angle with the angles opposite of each other. It gives substantially more contact area for the welding, and we did not weld the shafts directly to each other. The way you did it is very strong.

Incredible backyard engineering for that axle solution! That's the stuff I like to see. Welding that in 40 passes and a trip on the lathe would have been doable, but I don't blame you for taking it to a shop one bit. Nothing like sorting out a high stress but crucial rotating assembly, thinking you've got it down to micron perfection, then feeling it shake itself to death from being out of spec by a whisker on the maiden voyage. Ah, the circle of recurring project vehicles grows evermore! Never a dull moment. 😁👍 Add: Just for laughs, I would consider a little wood burner stove for your winter heat. Heck, if you want to get _real_ whimsical, wood vapor combustion for fuel and heat via thermal transmission pipe (guess you could call it an exhaust pipe over the transmission tunnel) would be comical.

so for axles that can't come apart with the tool, you can still over-extend the angle on the joint and pop the balls out one by one, and then disassemble it that way. Once you have that, the inner CV part can come off the axle. (there's most likely a C clip in there) A friend of mine with way more patience than me figured that out. :)

Nice to see a "new" project! I started watching with the Renault videos. Maybe for a heater in the Insight, just go with a 12v power supply and portable 12v electric heater. ? Also, I think it would be cool on the Renault to put a matching Predator engine and drivetrain in the front with a front wheel drive setup (maybe from a Saturn?) for all wheel drive. See what that does for performance. Could be really useful in those Kansas winters too!

@enormousdork3831
@enormousdork3831 8 месяцев назад
You could get wild with the heater. 240 or 740 volvo heater cores pump out enough heat to bake cookies. Sadly though, a small diesel engine would most likely get too cold to be efficient with one of those heater cores. I suppose you COULD wrap copper tubing around the exhaust some where, and whip up a stand alone heating system. While it would be almost instant heat in the winter, it would also add a pile of complexity to the over all build. Chinese diesel heater ? 🤷 Anyway, I love your builds, even the ones that dont quite live up to your expectations. Interesting and informative every time.
