Apocalypse Standalone Episode 3: Hy-Brasil - Geology or Myth.
Have we found a plausible geological mechanism for the creation and subsequent destruction of Ireland's lost island of Hy-Brasil? Or could this story simply be a myth with cultural origins dating back thousands of years before the Celtic peoples even arrived in Ireland?

Is it the Piri Reis map that had shores of Antarctica without ice on them? Did they say that the cartographers of the 16th century derived their maps from older maps? Could it be that prediluvian civilizations drew maps of the World and then some of their maps survived and were stored by ancient cartographers and so they basically copied their maps from these ancient ones not aware that the landmass had changed because the Sea levels had been elevated after the ice age? Idk - an idea. I feel like it's very plausible that an Island did exist there before the Sea Levels have risen? What is really bizare is that one of the wintesses at the Rendlesham Forest incident who witnessed a landed UFO actually began to see binary code in his mind and wrote it down. When it was decoded supposed coordinates of Hy Brasil were part of the message. Anyhow I've seen other hypothesis of these Phantom Islands basically being caused by overlapping dimesions or whatever. I don't really understand that concept, but I find it fascinating :D I guess a Phantom Island would be part of a parallel Universe or parallel "dimension" but then would sometimes somehow slip into our dimension. Don't ask me how that works, because I have no idea :D :D

Overlapping dimensions.... sounds like Brigadoon. I wonder why aliens would download coordinates of Hy Brasil into someone's brain? Why use binary ...since they're psychic, why not transmit base-ten numbers? I agree the old medieval maps were copied from prediluvian maps. Had to be, based on Antarctica shown without ice. ❤

It's interesting that the reintroduction of human habitation is right around the time of the Younger-Dryas event. Legends speak of land masses "sinking" into the sea. So perhaps there are geological processes we still haven't discovered yet that might explain the island along with others of legend, "Atlantis, Mu, Lemuria etc. Fantastic video by the way.

This would fit in with the archaeological evidence found in the Black Sea region. We know that during the Younger Dryas period there were settlements made along a now gone lake located in what is now the Black Sea so it could be possible Hy-Brasil is a memory, or a remnant of a memory, of a now gone land.

the post flood settlers are called the 'bag men' in the old writings. they are described as re forming the land with bags of dirt. indeed it is hard to tell in the invasion cycle where one tribe ends and the other begins. the bag men, the giant formor, the de dannan, and the more modern clans all related

@apocalypse First off really like your content and the work/research you put into these videos. If Porcupine shoals aren't it maybe we need to look further west, who's to say that Nova Scotia or St Pierre aren't the source for the story. We know Eric the Red and his ilk made their way across and back. Perhaps something similar happened alot earlier. What are your thoughts?

A question for anyone knowledgeable of Celtuc mythology: Does Hy Brasil tie into the mythology of the Tuatha De Dannan?
@darragh2511
@darragh2511 10 месяцев назад
Hi there. Yes, you are correct, this island is indeed linked to many Irish mythological tales, including the Tuatha Dé Danaan .... "The belief in this imaginary island was very much sustained by Irish mythology, considered to be one of the richest in Europe. In the Book of Invasions, a twelfth century collection of tales and narratives with a central role in the mythology and folklore of Ireland, we learn about Bres, or Bress, and later Breas, one of the first leaders of the Tuatha Dé Danann (People of the Goddess Danu). The name, as mentioned before, means beautiful, powerful and serves as the root of the word Breasail. According to Peter Berresford Ellis,1 when the People of the Goddess Danu, the ancient gods and goddess of Ireland, were defeated by the Milesians, they left immediately to Hy Brasil. In this context, the island could be seen as the Island of Bres. We also find Bresal as the High King of the Celtic world and the island of Bresal was known as the place where he used to establish his court every seven years. Hy Brasil is also compared to Tir na nÓg, the Land of Eternal Youth, one of the most popular legends in Ireland." www.google.ie/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CDQQw7AJahcKEwiIqprXpPWAAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAw&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.revistas.usp.br%2Fabei%2Farticle%2Fdownload%2F184277%2F170617&psig=AOvVaw1lfc7lEDMkFrHthnz5G0Jk&ust=1692966194599491&opi=89978449

Honestly it could have been a remnant memory of Doggerland. In the Faerie Queen by Sir Edmund Spenser there is a line mentioning a land bridge that once connected the island of Britain with the mainland. While in the past people probably wondered if it was some sort of tidbit of what could be considered worldbuilding by Sir Edmund Spenser the fact that we now know about the existence of Doggerland via archaeological evidence in the form of discarded tools and carved bones as well as underwater geography makes me wonder where Sir Edmund Spenser got the idea of the land bridge from. Could it be possible that Sir Edmund Spenser might have found an artifact from the time Doggerland was above water and this spark his imagination while creating the Faerie Queen? To be frank I don’t know.

Remnant memory of Doggerland is totally viable. Great idea!

Thanks@@Apocalypse_Tube. To bé honest ever since I read The Faerie Queen and learned of Doggerland I have wondered if there wasn’t some sort of connection between the story of the sunken land bridge mentioned in British mythology (including The Faerie Queen which is sadly unfinished due to Sir Edmund Spenser dying before getting more books done) and Doggerland. It would be interesting to reread the Histories of Britain and The Faerie Queen to glean any hint of reference, however minuscule, to Doggerland. Because if Medieval Britain had a history of a lost land bridge then that could be a remnant memory of Doggerland.

Hi There. Thank you so much for a well edited and thoroughly research video. It was very nice to hear the geological data. I am suprised you didnt mention the little depression in the sea at the south of the porcupine bank? It is still clearly visible on google maps and your video! Interestingly enough, it is shaped exactly like the old maps described it with a channel/depression running through its centre. You should be able to find it yourself or I can send it to you on email? Once thanks again for covering our native irish mythology and other mysteries. Much appreciated. Love from Ireland. -Mise le meas, A Chaoláein

Thank you for your kind comment, I will probably revisit Hy-Brasil in a later episode, There are a couple of features in the region of the porcupine bank that are interesting, but look way too small to be linked to any features on the old maps (unless the features were exaggerated of course). One of the features, is almost certainly basement rock poking through the sediment. The other feature, could be the remnants of a carbonate mound, but I'd have to do more research. It's always possible that "Hy-Brasil" on the old maps wasn't actually an island at all. It might have been a navigational marker used by depth sounders. Ancient sailors, even up until very recently, used to put tallow into the cavity of a lead depth sounder, if the depth sounder returned with no sediment embedded into the tallow, then they were sailing over rock. Sometimes it was useful to keep a note of the positions of underwater rock formations as it gave you some idea of where you were when you were too far from land to used coastal navigation techniques.

Hi, this is a great video. Have you any idea where the original Asian Brazilwood got its name? And are you suggesting that the island's name may have led some to falsely believe it had something to do with this wood?
@Apocalypse_Tube
@Apocalypse_Tube 3 месяца назад
It certainly seems that there were traders in Bristol that thought that the name bore enough of a resemblance to take the risk (even if they thought the chances of ever finding it were slim). Brasilwood was a high value commodity that had to be shipped over very long distances. A source of Brasilwood close to home would be a license to print money. It's unclear as to the true origins of the word Brasil. The trouble with ancient words is that they can change meaning over time or sound the same as other ancient words. There are, however, a number of good theories as to the origins of the word Brasil: Brasil could mean "embers", a reference to the reddish/orange colour of the wood. Brasilium (Medieval Latin), Bresil (Old French) and Braze (Germanic) all attest to this. All of these words have a common ancient origin rooted in the Proto-Indo-European word Bhreu (to boil, bubble, effervesce, burn). There's also a possible link to the old Arabic word for Saffron (wars), but no-one can figure out how the sound morphed from wars to brasil over time, so perhaps this is less likely.

@@Apocalypse_Tube Thanks, really informative and fascinating to ponder. By the way, have you consulted your coral theory with the scientific community? It doesn't sound unreasonable to me as a layman, given the conditions would've differed.

I think the cartographic placement of Hy-Brasil is too close to Ireland for it to be related to anything in the Americas. Also if it were St Pierre, surely Newfoundland would also be on the map? Ultimately it's impossible to say, we don't know where the original sources came from for these Medieval maps. On another note, I do suspect that there were old-world empires that would have, at least, attempted to explore the Atlantic, whether or not they were successful is another matter. The Romans for example, would have been aware of the work of Eratosthenes, the Greek polymath who worked at the Library of Alexandria. He accurately measured the circumference of Planet Earth in the 3rd Century BCE!!! His measurement was so accurate that his result was within a few hundred kilometres of our own modern day measurements. Given their insatiable need for conquest, I think it's highly likely that the Roman's would have wanted to explore as much of the world as possible.
@joshuamartin9355
@joshuamartin9355 Год назад
@@Apocalypse_Tube I think you're right about the old world powers attempting Atlantic travel. My understanding is that there is evidence of habitation in the Azores and Canary Islands that pre date the Spanish that might point to that possibility. Also, being an Antipodean, I've come across the story of the Gosford Glyphs in New South Wales, which look like Egyptian hieroglyphics although this is contested. So seafaring may have been much more widespread and established in ancient times.

In 2022, they did a DNA test of the oldest complete set of bones found in Ireland, and they discovered that he had dark skin and blue eyes. This would imply Africa, most likely North Africa. It is highly probable that these are the same Africans who you theorize left the Richat in Africa and found the Azore plateau. Since, if, as you say, they established an observatory in Salisbury, they would have had sufficient time to explore all of the area. If there was a civilization that took root on the Azore Plateau, it would have thrived for thousands of years. The observatories you postulate being the outer edges of an empire, but not outposts. We know that people lived in villages in the English channel during the period when the sea levels were low and the land was dry. So, if you're right about the Azore plateau, then the myth of Hybrazil is really a memory from the Azorians (Azlantians) of their lost homeland.

This connection in beliefs systems probably stems from an exiled Egyptian Princess who traveled with her people to become the ancestors of the Scots.

When I had google earth I went out to that area and put my location on the sea floor and moving along, at a certain point, was practically pushed out of the surface. I don't have the location exactly but that bank tends to be deeper toward Ireland and rise toward the edge westward before sharply dropping off. It was approximately in this location that it became extremely shallow at a certain point. Only I now cannot repeat that experiment though I did it several times when I had the opportunity. I think it is possible that there was subsidence that may have occurred. Considering that it is now counted as a myth, there is unlikely to be any geological investigation of this feature.
