Swedish Air Force Historic Flight Saab J35 Draken at Finnish 100 years anniversary airshow Jyväskylä 15.6.2018. Position 3:10 Draken engine is sterted by AVPIN system with reaction of isopropyl nitrate.
Thank you Don. Those guys with yellow jackets are volunteer of local flight club and pilots are display visitors from Swedish air force heritage organisation. Funny thing is that you can operate old mach 2 jet fighter by two person and without ladders.
SAAB (Model Draken) J 35A, started to be manufactured in 1959. Started in service 1960. It is an old airplane that does not remain in Swedish defense. There were 758 aircraft of the type "Dragon" built in different designs. The aircraft in the video is specially renovated for air shows and carries 2 extra fuel tanks. The aircraft's maximum speed is Mach 2. The flight distance without an additional fuel tank is 1 763 km. Max. flight height 19 995 meters. Rising speed 10 500 m / min. Armament 30 mm automatic gun m / 55 Robots Rb 24, Rb 27, Rb 28 Rockets 75 mm hunting missiles NOTE It's an almost 60 year old airplane!
We saw the Swedish Air Force Historic Flight Saab Draken together with the Saab Viggen last year in Volkel-The Netherlands.2 beautiful former Air Force jet planes!
The sample flying in the video is a Swedish historic flight plane painted it the Scheme of the last division using it F10. Finland didnt have that late version, that was equipped with an ir seeker (visible below the front)
I've been fortunate enough to see the Swedish Historic Flight many times over the years, and I hope that they'll be back next year, great show lads 🤓👌🍻 JIAD, CI.
Swedish engineering at its best. It is incredible such a small country was able to create so many damn good planes. Recently read that the Swedish AirForce was the fourth largest in the world during the Cold War. With the Saab Gripen in Swedish Inventory no one will want to mess with them.
JAS 39 even gives the F35 problems. Ask the Canadians. With the ultra high-tech ECMs on it, it's virtually invisible even if it's not a "Stealth" fighter.
To be honest, a lot of the Aero engineers and knowledge was imported from Germany after the WW2. Ni Nazi Germany was miles ahead in technology. By 1945 they had four full scale mach 4! Windtunnels, Sweden had zero.
I remember the first time I saw a picture if this beauty. As a child - it was in the late sixties - I was lost in my knowledge on fighters. I've never seen this kind of wings, with double delta... Even today, Draken appears to me like a idea cames from another thinking than the major part of the aeronautical at this time. The landing itself is a bit atttonishing, seated on the tail wheel... Gracefull manner to roll to slow down after hight speed flying. Thank you for this part of history still flying. A special interest for the very beautyfull Saab 105 too. Cheers from France for the video catching quality.
I don't want to spoil your love for this design but... A lot of knowledge, know how and Aero engineers was imported to Sweden from Germany post 1945. All the German contribution has not been recognised by Saab or the Swedish government.
@@xcvbxcvb2179 You don’t break anything of my dream ! I Know all the benefit allies took about german research. Years after years, it appear however that some of the design were not so efficient. They were in addition disturb in their plans by the hard bombing raids. Added to this the poor quality of the materials they used, the cruscent rarity of the oil... The fact that some of their decisions were not the best. And some other things like the prisonners workers which have resist int the plants. All that were chance for the allies. Please be cool with my english !... I'm french and need to practice !
Wow! Liked the photage, props to good filming! I am in the age to have seen Draken fly over my head when it was in service. This is soo cool to see, and I liked it very much! Draken is one of the most excentric planes of that time, but also one of the the fastest, most maneuverable and most feard in the 1960:s. Hard to fly, the pilots say, but when you learnd how to, it was one of the best! Thanks for the clip! Awesome!
When visiting my grandmother in northern Finland in the late 80's, a calm lazy afternoon was regularly interrupted by a deafening, air-ripping sound that's so caracteristic to Drakens. These were stationed in the north, whereas the MiG-21's were in the south.
up from 0:49 there is a saab 105... The draken is faszinating - i saw him at the airshow in graz/austria at 30th of august 1999 - it was used at the austrian military
Just say - magnificent! One of a kind! been 20 meters under one of these under full attack. Loud and and we had no chanse back in of the day. 1976 the baltic sea.
The Saab Draken is history but still a good looking kit. Quoting the Wikipedia: "The Saab 35 Draken is a Swedish fighter aircraft developed and manufactured by Saab between 1955 and 1974. It was the first fully supersonic aircraft to be deployed in Western Europe[3] and the first aircraft to do the Cobra maneuver.". What Saab provides today is the Saab JAS 39 Gripen. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_JAS_39_Gripen
Wau. Kiitos videosta.
What is “reaction of isopropyl Nitrate “ for? I used to load Jets and never saw that done. They don’t just get the turbine up to speed and introduce fuel?
Late answer but that refers to the starter, which runs by isopropyl nitrate. It allows engine to spool up much faster than electric starter. Close to so called cartridge start, but different.
I remember filling up the tank with that fuel. You had a small barrel with the stuff on a cart and hand pumped it. Sometimes when you attached the hose to the plane, that stuff would leak a bit from the nozzle and run down your arm. Not a very nice feeling at all. I think the tank had enough fuel for three starts, maybe 10 liters in total? Someone with better memory correct me :)
Nice, the pilot can get out without a ladder. And it looks upgraded. The landing looked like it needs a proper pilot though, while the trend seems to go to flying arcade machines. Let's hope these will be around for a while longer.
That beautiful Draken: why is the RAT always deployed on landing? Also, how was the engine started - was that AVPIN (like the EE Lightning starter) or cartridge start?
When engine is not running, there is no hydraulic pressure, the RAT (whatis called "Milla" in Draken) hangs outside, the pressure itself takes it in. Engine is started with AVPIN (isopropyl nitrate) as you mentioned.
When I was in the Swedish youth airforce, sort of like the boy scouts within the airforce. I was a total viggen fanboy, yes it was way back and i am and old fat guy now, and of course i also thought the F-14 tomcat was all that :), what young adolescent didn't in those days ;o). I heard people speaking of this aircraft with reverens saying that the old school draken pilots could do things with that airplane that viggen pilots could only dream of. I am not saying it was better performance wise just that it could do some amazing flying. This is also hearsay as i have not witnessed any fancy flying in the draken. Just the genuine respectful way they talked about it made me respect this airplane a lot more.
Well the Viggen being an attack aircraft first only had a slightly tighter turn circle than the Draken. The main thing with the Viggen was the electronics, there where some pretty bad ass Draken modernization's looked at before the Gripen project was green lit, most included giving in canards some even turning it into an attack aircraft with RBS 15's and everything !
It's a shame there are no videos left from the original Draken simulators in RU-vid, or has someone seen one (the computer, control board and the plane with hydraulic jacks)? I have cleaned some parts back in 1993 as a student engineer, but would love see a glimse of those after all these years.
@@Manufly59 Based on the link below, the simulator was made by Curtiss-Wright Corp? The similator at Rovaniemi back then had at least three rows of cabins 4-6 meters each, there was one main switch which occasionally flew sparks when the computer was turned on (ate Amps), the operators/flight instructors table was towards the fighter, the first half of the fighter was resting on top of 3 hydraulic jacks which tilted/rolled the fighter, there was no graphical user interface at all - only analog meters, non-transparent canopy, gravity and tightening of the seat belts gave the 3D immersion inside the fighter, lights would turned on in the canopy when flying over clouds, if the fighter stalled there was a piece of metal producing from the stick and it vibrated according to the stall. The contacts in each circuit board needed to be cleaned occasionally while wearing a mask that got fresh air from a back pack. Fond memories from a short Time with this beast, marvelous engineering from the 1960 era. www.aef.se/Flygvapnet/Notiser/Simulator/Simulator_Notis_2.htm
