If the Siege of Vienna feels familiar for you without really knowing why, it's probably because Tolkien based a large part of the Battle of Helm's Deep on the Siege of Vienna. The Rohirrim are essentially the Winged Hussars of Middle Earth.

the Battle of Vienna was in September. For Poles, the date of this battle is treated as the day when we saved Europe. We call it the Viennese Relief. big greetings from Poland. I will add that Poles are a very proud nation and if someone tries to lie about Polish history (Polish death camps) we are ready to fight xD
@A_Ducky
@A_Ducky 3 года назад
There are no Polish death camps. Never were. Just because Nazis built them on Polish land which they took by force, that does NOT mean they were "Polish concentration camps". Whoever says that is either hating, uninformed, or plain stupid. Poland helped sooo many Jewish ppl during the holocaust, hiding them everywhere they could. Now they're asking for wut? Reparations? Excuse me?!??!! Nothing against anyone, only against things that don't make sense & aren't true. Cześć from a Bosnian in California, with many awesome Polish friends & neighbors. 🤘😎🤘 (someday, I'm visiting 🇵🇱 if it's the last thing I ever do!!)

@@JJolZi0mekpl Just the truth, which must be known.. especially in today's age of "fake news". Love Poland! I'm a Slav too (Bośnia), and have Polish friends & neighbors who have been "through hell and back" during the late 70s/early 80s communist regime. Their stories equal mine from an actual war (one part of which is explained in Sabaton song "We Burn") .. yet it was all done in supposed "peace time" there! I'm trying to learn a little Polish but having memory issues. Helps that a lot of words are similar between our 2 languages. Started saying "Co?" in everyday life, heh.. I get some funny looks from Americans, but oh well 🤷 at least I didn't adopt the word "kurwa" 😂 Watching "Kapitan Bomba" livestreams, but not understanding much, unfortunately. The writing is superb, but very hard for a non-Pole to understand. So I just sing "bejbi aj lav ju veri macz..." 😂 and "myk myk myk disco polo". But my elderly Polish neighbors LOVE disco polo, so not in front of them. 😇 During the live Demons & Wizards performance at Wacken 2019, I randomly went into the live chat here on YT to ask if anyone had a screen capture of that gig. Only 1 person of thousands answered & helped: a Pole! He's been my best friend ever since. 😊 I'm disabled, living in chronic pain.. he helps me get through the hard times by sending more metal, Polish movies & music, telling me about Polish history (my high school education was interrupted by war, and in the U.S. colleges they don't teach you that, unless you're studying history). He also creates dashcam videos of his city in Poland, and it's so so beautiful & peaceful. I watch other Polish videos too, like the scenery in the Bieszczady mountains.. where lots of cool animals can be spotted (most recently a weasel.. łasica.. which changes it's coat in winter to white, so it looks kinda like a polar bear, lol).. and so much more. Then these Polish neighbors cook best food ever, and ALWAYS share. Not just with my family, but with anyone who wishes, including another Polish old lady who lives here alone & just had hip surgery (it's a building for elderly & disabled). Since this Polish couple moved into the building last year, they filled the whole place with warmth & kindness.. as opposed to previous 14yrs during which "Karen" behavior ruled, uncaring & unhelpful. And the food itself... OMG!!! It cannot be explained, everyone should just try it. Very similar to Bośnian foods, but sometimes with just enough of a twist that makes even my US friends say "This must be what Gods on mount Olympus ate". I've become mielone, gołąbki, pierógi addict, as did my Californian friend. He exclaims even at salads they make, like pickled peppers. And the real smoked sausage, which they buy for us at a Polish store in San Francisco. Today, I'm checking out Karpatka cake.. yumm. Looks similar to a cake we make called "krempita". Sorry for such a long post, but as you can tell I'm REALLY passionate about all things Poland. Sending you hugss from here. 🤗 🤍❤️

The Polish should never be underestimated, it's a huge mistake to do that. During the period of WWII that is called "The Battle Of Britain" one of the first - If not the first - German plane shot down was done by a Polish pilot. As it is shown in the film "The Battle Of Britain" there was a squadron of Polish pilots in England, and at one time when they were up training formation flying and things like that, one of the pilots spotted a German plane heading for his designated target. The Polish pilot called it out - in Polish - to the other pilots and they pealed off one by one to engage the German planes. If you haven't seen the film - Do it! During the summer of 2018 Europe was ravaged by big forest fires everywhere. My homecountry Sweden also had big fires that quickly went out of control. Who did Sweden turn to for help? Poland of course, 139 firemen, 44 fire engines and 11 support vehicles travelled the 550 miles from Trelleborg in the far South up to Sveg halfway up the country. They moved so fast that the Emergency Coordination Authority lost track of them (sounds a bit familiar, doesn't it?). You could follow the Polish firemen going up the country in videoclips on facebook and in reports in newspapers, but when the Authority was asked about the Polish's whereabouts they said "No, we don't know anything about that. We know that they have arrived in Trelleborg but we have no reports saying they have arrived at their destination in Sveg". Still no Lost Batallion...? It must show up somewhere, at some time... Cheers / B.

Thank you Mr. B for this info, I had no idea. And your first sentence is right on!! Never underestimate the people who lost their country for hundreds of years yet never stopped fighting for their freedom until they got it back! My Polish neighbor was jailed (by his own ppl) for peacefully protesting against the communist regime in early 80s. He was a copper miner. One way they'd protest was to have long hair, because the regime didn't allow it. Every last miner did it. Repercussions were fierce.. jail & finally emigration (before being outright killed like so many of his friends, and that wasn't even in wartime).
@dernwine

Yeah, but the whole Polish pilots in the batttle of britain thing has become incredibly hard to untangle from the myth that's grown up around them. Dowding was almost certainly correct when he said that the Polish squardons (more than one) where vital to winning the battle of Britain, because Britain was short of trained fighter pilots by august 1940 (when the Polish squardrons where deployed, after nearly 2 months of battle [held back before hand because of worries about what would happen letting non-english speaking pilots into the sky with English speaking air traffic control, not an unreasonable fear, and far from the racist accusation that have often been levelled since]). On the other hand the Polish (and wider international aid) effort to the Battle of Britain was only about 1/10th of the fighter squadrons deployed during the battle, so when the pendulum swings to far the other side and it gets claimed that the poles "won the battle of britain." HIstory is complicated and there almost never is a black and white answer.
@A_Ducky
@A_Ducky 3 года назад
@@dernwine Polish & other effort was only 1/10th? Compare the British empire to a lil country like Poland who didn't exist for centuries.. and thank them for being there at all. Allies didn't exactly help Poland in WW2.. Sabaton even sings about it.
@dernwine
@dernwine 3 года назад
@@A_Ducky Exhibit A of why the Polish involvement is hard to untangle: People like you get their nationalist knickers in a twist. For the record the RAF was only founded a few months before the Polish Republic, so centuries of History had nothing to do with it, and yes, the Polish contribution amounted to about 140 pilots out of the 1,000+ fighter pilots the RAF had so again, a bit of perspective is needed here. And for the Allies who didn't help Poland? Britain send a second generation to an early grave and litterally went into a war that they knew would cost them their empire for Poland, so cut the shit about "allies not helping."

The “they’re outnumbered 15 to 1” line is referring to the Ottoman forces vs Viennas defenders. I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me, but it was about 10,000 defenders that were besieged for 2 months by a (approximately) 150,000 men army. It’s Vienna’s defenders that are making their last stand.

Watching some of your older reactions (a bit late to the party) I couln't skip the one about the most badass Polish military unit. Poland has the most interesting history of all European nations. We experienced periods of being a great empire (Jagiellon dynasty), gradual decline and losing independence, then regaining it a few times. The Battle of Vienna is one of the events that even the kids here learn about in the primary school. It's often mentioned when we help other nations. Recently, when hundreds of Polish firefighters went to Greece to help fighting enormous wilfires, one of their commanders compared them to the Winged Hussars. Greetings from Poland:)

Even though this song is so popular, I've honestly had a little trouble liking it. Until now! So tank you, for once again an amazing video 🥳 Also, Hannes last name is actually a drunken joke. It was originally only Dahl, but after som discussions with different other words, which is a bit hard to explain if you're not from Sweden, him and his friends decided that "Vandal" sounded cool, so someone at the pre-party printed out papers for a name change, filled them in and posted the envelope on their way to the bar, and a few weeks later he got a letter saying the name change went through. During this time he had forgotten they sent the papers, and were genuinely surprised. I think it's a great story, and a really awesome name. I looked it up once. The “we remember in september” is in reference to Vienna. If my memory is correct, and if someone who fully knows better can correct me, Vienna every year holds a celebration to commemorate the Winged Hussars coming down the calemburg to save the city. Complete with ceremonial hussars marching down the streets. Great vid Tank. Being 50% Polish and 4th gen Polish American this song stirs pride for my heritage every time i hear it along with 40:1 and uprising. We just don’t know how to quit and are too stubborn to cave in. As for future songs... hmm.... where to go from here... Ghost in the trenches, to hell and back (you should watch the official music video for this one, its powerful) the last stand, the last battle, Union, Resist and bite, the final solution, and Devil Dogs. Hopefully i’m right above about Vienna but I welcome someone correcting me. Have a great day and cya next time Tank.

The musical phrases you hear after "We will seek vengeance eye for an eye" and "back home the sultan's sealing your fate" are very common in Turkish music (might also be in others, I just know the Turkish one from personal history). You hear it in a lot of traditional and classical Turkish music. Also, as someone who grew up in the Turkish educational system, I really wish this was how we'd learned our history. SO much better than the dry-ass "And in 16XX this battle happened and that agreement was signed" etc etc that we got - Covering ALL 800-some odd years of the existence of the Ottoman Empire.

The first time I have seen Sabaton outside of a festival was on their Carolu Rex tour. What I loved especially about that tour was that the band has let the crowd decide on big parts of their setlist. Multiple times during their set they gave some different songs as options to choose from to the crowd deciding by how loud the people reacted to each song. That was such a fun way of interaction and making one feel sort of special and appreciated. And since I was lucky to be able to visit two shows on that tour I got to see 2 set that were quite different from another which was even more awesome.

Agree, you can immediately identify a Sabaton song, between overall sound and Joachem's? vocals. His energy level is astounding: wears me out just watching!

Lithuanian here. We have a few HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) schools in my country and they are called "Husaras". Also, we see Winged Hussar references in historical fairs, museums and many things are called this way. Reenactment is also a thing. So in Poland and Lithuania this stuff is still alive in cultural consciousness. Man, most of Europe is envy of USA's economy, lifestyle and prestige, but USA doesn't have one thing that us do: amazingly awesome history like that 😋 P.S. Wow, I just noticed you have Fallen behind you, lol.

As an album, the Last Stand edges out the rest as my favorite album, despite many favorites among all of them. Bannockburn, the lost battalion, the last stand, shiroyama, the winged hussars, the last battle, roarkes drift - all are excellent. The use of triggered gunfire samples vice drums in the Lost Battalion was a neat trick.

Great video! The part in the lyrics where it says "outnumbered 15 to 1" is about the austrian troops defending the city, who were about 10.000 strong and the ottomans were about 150.000 strong.

As always i enjoyed this reaction video with you, i know you get tons of suggestions but I would like to slip one in anyway. "Rorke's Drift" In my opinion it is one of their songs that fly a bit under the radar, there is some great gitarr in it for instance, as for the history it might not be the typical "good guy" theme. There is an official lyric video, and a few there someone has synced the music to some movie but to my knowledge no live-version available. Anyhow check it out i think you will like. Cheers from Sweden

Thank you Tank, for reacting to one of my most favourite Sabaton songs (even if a choice is very hard there ^^) . I may be mistaken,but I think the "15:1" was the numbers of the Vienna garrison vs. the Ottoman army..but as I said, I may be wrong there.. if you ever manage to visit VIenna, visit the "Heeresgeschichtliches Museum",they have artifacts and loot of that battle and some very cool displays :) If I may nag you a bit in the end, let me remind you of 3 more songs, I love a lot,these would be "The last battle", "Heart of Iron" and "Cliffs of Gallipoli" Have a great Sunday,my friend :)

Sabaton often does exclusive songs live when they are in a city/country they have a song about but that is not in the "regular" set list :) Like en livstid i krig was only played in Sweden or resit and bite (you have to listen this one !) only in Belgium... And as French I do belive we will be able to enjoy Fields of Verdun live for a long time !

Now that you have seen a lot of historical songs, you should definitely check out their less historically themed songs such as Metal Machine, Metal Ripper, and my favorite of them Metal Crue. Within a dozen or so minutes, nearly 20,000 horsemen, including 2,500 hussars, fell from the hill on the Turks standing in the valley. The heavy driving gradually gained momentum, then it went full blast and rushed like a hurricane into battle. It was followed by armored banners, light cavalry and allied forces - Austrians and Germans. Greetings from Poland.

Fun fact: This song is about the 2nd siege of Vienna, which happened in 1529. The Ottomans actually tried the same tactic then - which was to dig mines and blow up the walls, which also failed. In the Siege of 1529, the landschneckt and spanish harquebusiers defended the city. One of the key turning points - in both sieges - was how the defenders found the mines and stopped the ottomans from gaining victory. In 1529, they went into the basement of every building they could, and filled buckets and barrels with water to watch for ripples, which would tell them where the Ottomans were digging. The 2nd siege, I believe they used dried peas (or something like that) on top of barrels and watched them to see if they would move. Once they saw ripples or the peas move, the knew the tunnels were close. In 1529, the defenders also launched counter attacks to disrupt the tunnels and capture the enemy, which did a great deal in delaying the Ottomans from blowing the walls. After the first Siege, Vienna actually built new walls in a way that would better defend and give the attacker less of an advantage through the use of tunneling and mining.

there were 150.000 Ottoman Soldiers vs the 11.000 Austrian Garrison + 5000 volunteers inside the city of Vienna, by the time the Holy League gathered the relief force, around 27.000 men were from Poland (on top of the 47000 Soldiers from the German States), Jan the 3rd Sobieski from Poland was given overal command of the forces being the European monarch with the most experience in Warfare, by the time they arrived from the Kahlenberg to direct the attack, it was the Winged Hussars around 120 more or less sent as a vanguard to charge the enemy at once to provoke shock and some chaos, the largest Cavalry Charge in History happened afterwards of 18.000 (the Combined cavalry forces of the german states) being led by 3.000 winged hussars. On top of that this was the Second Time the Ottomans Attempted to Seize Vienna

There's a video floating around somewhere on RU-vid where they're getting the crowd amped up for Swedish Pagans, and instead went into Winged Hussars. One of my favorite Sabaton videos and I wish they'd do that a little bit more often lmao. Oh also, I'd recommend The Art of War next (or later down the line). One of the first Sabaton songs I heard back when that album dropped in 2008, and one of my personal favorites (you might also notice that it shares a similar melody to this one lol).

If my history is correct, the winged hussars were an elite force that for 200+ years never lost a battle. Basically if they entered the fray,the enemy had already lost as they would break merely from the presence, much less the hussars famous charges and other heavy battle tactics to wreak untold havoc against troops on foot, Wether i got the exact numbers of years right i cant say with 100% but the winged hussars are as legendary as the swedish caroleans,only the hussars were much much earlier in history but comparable in the sense that even a small force could take 10 000+ killed and more wounded,and suffer 10-50 casaulties of their own. Truly the stuff of legends,and unbelievable except it is well documented from neutral sides,and both parties to the conflict in official documents so as unbelievable as some stories may seem, it is a matter of fact and belief plays no part. Which makes it so much more badass. Also ,if i recall correctly, the polish king himself led the hussars as they charged from the high ground and scattered and routed the ottoman forces.
@Ashes-001

the perspective is from the defenders who send a message to the winged hussars to save them so the 15 to 1 is the ratio from attackers to defenders. Then the winged hussars arrived

When you listen closely you maybe find some music-vibes relayted to the country or region of the story. This e.g. has something of oriental flair in the bridge (like "Counterstike", "Panzer Battalion" or "Reign of Terror"), in "Hearts of Iron" they play Beethovens 7th as a solo (because ... Germany). In "to Hell an Back" there is this Spagetti-Western intro/mid/outro ... and on and on... Like little eastereggs hidden in the story (as in D2 the Gjallarhorn for 20 exotic engrams at Spiders lair seven seasons ago ;) )

Funny history for You, Tank ;) For Polish forces Vienna relief was not a military operation. It was... pilgrimage. Yup, pilgrimage. As for military expedition king would have to rise special taxes approved by Sejm (parliament) - and there was no time for that. Or pay from his own coffer - that was empty as hell. So the only one option left was quite unorthodox - call for pilgrimage where all participant were to pay for themselves. Every evening was conducted with field mess like proper pilgrimage etc. Force was small, but elite - they needed to spearhead charge - rest of German and Austrian cavalry could go behind and use advantage Hussars gave them.
