Directly south of the park is a town named Lake Los Angeles (a failed mini Las Vegas.) I've lived there my whole life and hiked this butte many times. On the most southern face about a quarter of the way up there's a formation of rocks me and my best friend named "Kobi's Peak"; the name of my husky who was with us which turned out to be his last day of life as well. Thank you for visiting this neglected park and treating it with respect.

I enjoy all of the AA videos, but these that Thomas does of the day hikes are some of my favorites because they're more like the type of trip that I'm able take around here

Thanks guys!!! Thanks Thomas!!! I live in California and don’t explore it. Came across Adventure Archives in the midst of this coronavirus sickness and am so pleased to see California being explored. It gets me excited to get well and go out there and see the beauty I’ve so seriously under appreciated.

Sand blasts really do hurt your face so badly. It's one of those things that you never really think about until its happened to you, at least once. On another note, I hope this park has gotten so more love in the last 5 years or so since this video (: these places are so important to keep alive.

I lived in Southern California for over 20 years. Every weekend I would venture and discover what Califonia has to offer. I moved from California to Texas over 13 years ago, but I still visit there every year. To this date, I still have not seen everything, I would take more than a lifetime to discover that paradise.

The origin of the Joshua tree name is from settlers who were reminded of the Joshua, from the Old Testament, holding up his arms in prayer, according to wiki. Also, those are not sage brush, but Creosote bushes, very common in the deserts. Enjoyed your misadventure!

Another informative video. Even though I worked in Palmdale for many years and ran desert trails at lunchtime, I never did get to this area. This looks like a great winter hike, but I don't mean winter as in snow. Even though the area gets very little rain or snow, one should still dress for strong winds combined with cool temperatures. Hypothermia can be a problem, even in the desert.

This is one of my favorite hikes to do in the Antelope Valley. I've done it 8 or 10 times, and recommend doing it in the fall or spring. What's great about it is that you almost always have the trail to yourself as rarely is their anyone else hiking in the park. Bring plenty of water though as there is hardly any shade, save for a few Joshua Trees here and there.

I feel you Thomas on the crashing tripod accident. My wife had an episode like that on a waterfall hike. Put the tripod on a rock...turned....down went tripod...bye bye camera. Now I am always on standby for a falling tripod grab lol.

Love the solo hike, and the display of vulnerability. Good lessons. Of all the solo-hiker-youtubers out there, Thomas does it best with his expert stream of consciousness. Still waiting for solo Thomas overnight episode.

David danced before the LORD. :-) Joshua was the one who took the Israelites into the promised land after Moses died. Maybe the settlers who moved into the area (and named the tree) thought it was their promised land, so to speak.... Sorry about your camera!

Thanks Thomas for making this place more well known. I have been there several times because I have an R.V. and they have a dump site there for my sewer. I did not know the info About the name. I always wandered why it was called that & what it meant. So, thank you! 😀

I liked the lens metaphor. Seems it would've been appropriate to add "but no matter what lens you're using...just make sure it doesn't make your rig top-heavy in the wind!" I feel for you man. I think most of us have done something similar. I once dropped my camera onto a rock and into a creek in the Smoky Mountains while attempting to hand it to someone. Doh!!

Vasquez Rocks, and Red Rocks parks are far better imo. For VR, Take the long loop and have picnic at the flats. For RR, after the normal trails, visit the Indian ruins and take a drive In the back country mining areas. Thanks for this trip!

it's a very dry place, but full of life if you just take the time to look. Every spring it comes alive with beautiful wildflowers. On January 1, 2020, they have the 1st Day Hikes event with guided tours, and you will learn so much about the desert and find it amazing.
