Safari vs IMS Tank For the WR250R

We are talking after market petrol tanks for the motorcycle. I am in a bit of a unique position. Having owned and ridden with both the Safari 14l and the IMS 18l petrol tank (gas tank for you Americans).
Both tanks are of high quality and fit the Yamaha WR250R reasonably well. Though I must say the IMS required a little more caressing to fit. The IMS also suggests a more complicated fuel breather set up, but I just used Safari's simple method without issue.
For you trail riders and dual sport riders that only do day rides or short tours. The Safari is a great option. For the people who do big adventure rides with extended gaps between petrol/fuel, the IMS has the edge.
Enjoy the video,
COS

I rode my WR with a Safari from UK to Magadan and rarely wanted more fuel even though my travel buddy had a larger IMS tank on his DRZ400 - he just carried more fuel, more of the time. Tempted by IMS but will still with Safari because it is smaller and neater on the bike. Extra weight undermines the best qualities of the WR!

Thanks for the comparison and warning about the bracket. I think the safari is best for Idaho and looks better in my opinion. I'll put a rotopax mount on the top rack for extended range but will usually use it for a water can. Btw the safari is $175 more expensive in the US. Cheers brother

I have had the Safari tank on my wr for years with plenty of drops and no problems. I did one section of the TAT where fuel was almost an issue across the Nevada desert. Fuel light came on 20 miles from the station, appromixmatley 200 miles. Based on Andrew Carleton's comments, I would stick with Safari.

I have owned 2 18L IMS tanks and one safari tank. Both my IMS tanks leaked from the fuel pick up bungs in the wings of the tank. IMS replaced the first but when the second did it I asked for a refund. And they were great about that too. Great company to deal with. Wish the tank was designed different. The safari has been great but left the range lacking. I added a camel Tank. It adds 6L that hangs on the back left of the bike. So now I have 20L but it has cost me around $1000 But when you need to go 500km between fills what are you to do.

Thanks for the vid COS. I just installed the IMS tank to my WR. Installation was a breeze and heaps of clearance with the B&B radiator guard. Filled with fuel and oh no.. fuel leak around the brass fitting on the right side tank wing. Can't be tightened as the brass fitting spins as you turn the nut. Glad you have had better luck than me. Waiting to hear back from the supplier with warranty claim. No riding for me this weekend..sigh

I'm looking at these two options currently, but the IMS is now $800+, where the Safari is still under $600. I'm trying to figure out which to go for. I know I want more range than stock, but I'm not sure whether I can justify the IMS (both price difference and whether realistically I need the extra range). I've only just got the WR and want to do longer trips, while the idea of buying Australian with the Safari is also a bit of a bonus.

Hi Kris, I’m in exactly the same position you were in when you left your comment. Which tank and what colour did you end up getting? Do you have any views/regrets or commendations on the tank you ended up with? Many thanks, Hugh PS for COS.Your documentaries were instrumental to my decision to get a WR. @@hughcunningham2366 I still haven't pulled the trigger to be honest. I'm leading towards the bigger IMS for the range but need to put the money aside. I've bought a fair few smaller things which keep setting me back. I might see if the local store with them in stock can do a better price and how that compares to the best Safari price too. IMS seems to be 850 AUD now and the Safari 650.

I would use a bit of hdpe plastic between the radiator and tank rather than the foam or in addition to it. You can stick it on with some good quality double sided adhesive. Cheers

I have the ims. Clearance around the rad was not good so i got the engine nice and hot then jammed a wooden wedge between the tank and the rad guard to push it out and thermoset it away. It worked. Leave the engine running for a while to get the plastic hot. I did it a couple of times again after a ride to make sure and its taken a new set with plenty of clearance now. I am getting over 500 k's range bare. Kitted out remains to be seen. Love my wr . Its such a well engineered bike for the money. The only slight bummer is the low fuel light comes on a tad early but what does it matter if you can see how much fuel you have left. I would not recomend just putting a rub strip/patch on the tank . It will eventually fail. I have b and b guard. You could file a bit off the guard but try thermosetting it first before you get drastic. I dont like the fact that the left hand shield is not snug scribed to the tank but it works. Well worth the money though and no leaks.

chroniclesofsolid Love your vids by the way .Very unbiased frank and informative. It was very hard to decide which adv bike to get .Budget was not an issue but in the end I wanted to keep it simple and go serious off road without breaking a leg . The WR just does it so well .Steep rutted fire roads covered in dead branches rocks and leaf litter . No problem. I did upgrade the suspension via technics ,well worth the money. I like how the tank lowers the center of gravity which obviates the weight increase . I did not find it difficult to fit the tank either. I just unscrewed the pump from the stock tank without disconnecting it and switched it over . Easy. Love the range on this tank . Protects your legs quite well in the rain too . Cheers Brian

Thanks mate appreciate it. Sounds like you pretty much got the WR for the same reasons I did, highly capable bike. It's funny you mention the technics suspension. Jeff, who I often ride with, just re-valved the rear through them. Going to see how it turned out and maybe do a comparison review. Hopefully it cures the horrible rebound issue. How have you found yours after the upgrade?
@brianminghella3312
@brianminghella3312 7 лет назад
chroniclesofsolid Its a firmer ride and a tad harder BUT way better balanced and absorbs the big bumps really well without wallowing and dragging. Well worth their money. Technics did the full front and rear on mine . Good blokes and very thorough. They have a really well setup workshop and just very professional . They lowered my front forks a tad and put in a heavier rear spring re valved the front forks . It just feels really planted and secure. Rebound is no longer an issue because they tune the damping really well . Its so good you dont notice it if that makes sense . I dont like soft suspension but its got to absorb the big hits without being harsh . From my experience with mountain bikes I know from hard won experience the suspension is the most critical factor in getting a good riding bike that runs through obstacles without dipping sliding and crapping out on you.

Guess I better start saving my pennies for a suspension upgrade.

I realized that you said "if your doing long adventures, the ims tank has the edge" and I was thinking the ims only has 1 more gallon. I could purchase the rotopax 1.75 gallon to equal 5.45 of fuel for long multi day adventures.
@conceptcs
@conceptcs 7 лет назад
according to your logic, then you can just leave the 2 gal stock tank on and bring a 5 gallon gas container with you. save money/time. If I don't have to bring more stuff, I don't, that's the convenience of the larger thank.

Hello CoS, i love your channel. Just a quick question; Does the transparent tanks cause the petrol vaporize in summer dramatically? Or have you ever experience a noticable decrease in fuel level in the tank due to parking under the sun or noticed more consumption riding all day in the desert? Since the fuel subjected directly to the sun light, this transparent tanks puzzles me. Please pretty please take your time to answer, because i really want to get to the bottom of this :) Transparent or not Transparent, that is the question. - HamletADV
@chroniclesofsolid
@chroniclesofsolid 6 лет назад
I have not noticed any dramatic increase in vaporisation with the translucent tank (I have owned two). They conducts very little heat being the colour and thickness they are. It could be argued that it might even vaporises less than a stock metal or black tank. To put your mind at ease I have ridden in 40+ degree (celsius) days and not had a problem. YMMV COS

Hi, on my stock WR i have from Flatland - aluminium Radiator Guard. Do you know when a change to a bigger tank (IMS or Safari) it will fit or can i have some issues. One more question - what about IMS but 3gal tank
@chroniclesofsolid
@chroniclesofsolid 7 лет назад
Hi Aleksander, I don't have first hand knowledge of the fitment of the Flatland guard with the IMS tank/s. On the forums it seems it does fit but it takes some work to get the tank on and some said they had to bend parts of the guard. However from the description it does not sound too much worse than the Force guard I have. Tank fitment requires a bit of caressing with the Force guard and they touch. Perhaps and email to Flatland or IMS would clear it up? COS

Fuel economy question. I have a 250XT "Serow" here in the Philippines. On my last trip, 2-up, with full hard luggage, we got 80-90 miles per gallon US. Your only getting a max of 59mpg (450km in 17.8L) Why such a difference? Their both Yamaha fuel injected 250's and we were heavy loaded. ? I wish IMS made a tank for the XT250.
@chroniclesofsolid
@chroniclesofsolid 6 лет назад
I am no expert Keshab, but I think it would have to do with the performance of each engine. The WR250R makes significantly more power from the same engine displacement and more power usually means using more fuel. Secondly is the terrain you and I ride, I do a lot of sustained 110kph riding to get to the dirt and then once I get to the dirt I flog it some more with tough tracks and my poor off road skills :-P
@tosgem
@tosgem 5 лет назад
Keshab, I think the XT is more economical than the WR. HOWEVER, if you ride the WR gently, as slowly as an XT, then it can come close. If I ride at 80km/h my WR gets about 35km per litre, which is around 80mpg. But when riding at 110km/h or doing desert, sand riding with the throttle open a lot it will use a lot more fuel
@R2robot
@R2robot 2 года назад
Engine tuning/gearing/type of riding, etc. Stock xt 250 is rated for ~19 hp, stock wr250r is ~29hp. the xt is estimated to get 76mpg, wr was estimated to get 72mpg. I have the wr250x model and when commuting for work, I was getting ~62mpg while acting like a doofus. 80-90 is a bit.. dubious at best. Must have been downhill both ways. :D
