This safety toe test is not highly scientific and is meant to be illustrative and fun.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 60,000 foot injuries each year that are serious enough to lead to lost work days. In 75% of those cases, workers were not in compliance with their company’s safety rules.
That means many of them were not wearing safety shoes. So let’s see how much protection safety shoes offer by doing a safety toe test.
IMPACT TEST - 80% of foot injuries are caused by objects that weigh less than 30 pounds. ASTM rated safety shoes are tested to stand up to an impact of up to 75 pounds. We are going to drop a rigging hook weighing around 20-25 pounds on shoes to see what they do.
COMPRESSION TEST - Impacts are one thing, but compression from rolling objects or moving equipment is another. ASTM rated shoes have to resist a compression load of up to 2,500 pounds. In this safety toe test, we run over a few shoes with a compactor.
CHAINSAW TEST - Now, the average safety boot isn’t rated for chainsaws, but we wanted to see how these shoes would do anyway - for fun.
Don’t try to pass off regular boots as safety boots. Choose the right shoe for the job and stay safe.

Hi everyone! Thank you for watching. This video is intended to be a fun, non-scientific test of safety toe shoes vs. non-safety toe shoes. Remember, take good care of your gear and it will take care of you!

It would be cool to see comparisons of internal versus external metatarsal protections. Pros and cons of each.

That compactor tho... Your video has an important point for those who say toe-caps will just amputate instead of protecting. I'll take the protected hot dogs any day over the meat-paste from the unprotected boots. If a force is strong enough to curl that steel down, it is going to decimate your foot without the steel (or composite material). Thanks for making this one!

Great video! Having worked in both logging and heavy civil construction I can attest to the need for safety toed work boots! Not to mention that innovations such as Kevlar composites have made the boots lighter and more comfortable that when I first started in industry (won't say when ;)). Thanks!

Chainsaw safety boots are always steel toe, nothing else, because the steel chainsaw blade will cut right through aluminum, composite and nano carbon safety boots. Please reply. Dave...

Okay. The video is testing different materials and not making recommendations for specific hazards.

One glaring question I have that no one a ever asks is why should you have to recover from wearing safety toe shoes in the first place? Most companies that institute this policy fail to do a proper hazard and risk assessment of if the policy will truly be beneficial for employees. Yes it will help prevent foot injuries if something is dropped on or driven over the foot. What is never considered as a balance is the definite long term consequences of wearing safety toe shoes (versus slip resistant and other safety shoes provides). Things such as hip, knee and ankle pain that WILL be caused due to the unnatural foot and toe mechanics that result over time. Unfortunately no one is willing to do a long term study on this. Only found one from Britain that got no press about a decade ago I believe. There is without a doubt areas that the benefits out way risks, but not the blanket policies OSHA pushes and companies blindly follow with short term thinking without looking at long term outcomes for employees that likely only work for a company a decade or so. Thank you for the great information, but maybe give some consideration to asking the better questions up front.

Hey Rachel, Cool video and how many pulls and takes did it take you to get your chainsaw started and running for the video? What else have you pull started yourself before besides the chainsaw?
