This is a fascinating topic. In your opinion, do earlier illustrations such as in The Book of Kells, Gospels of St. Gall, etc. indicate the possibility of other dyes being used on leine in earlier periods?

One thing I always wonder is what Irish kings and their kinsmen wore in civilian life prior to the late 16th century. It seems to have been rather in line with the rest of the upper class, it looks a bit like the difference in rank was mostly military equipement ? Could be wrong.
