It is such a beautiful thing. I would be happy with it just sitting there never running. I am surprised that the little rubber belt around the fan doesn't melt. What a neat engine. Thanks for showing it to us!

I ended up using a silicone o-ring 2.0mm cross section x 50mm OD for the fan belt. The heat shouldn't bother it.

Nice job Ron, 👍. You mentioned it doesn’t coast like the stirling.. the stirling doesn’t coast, it continues to run until the temperature difference isn’t great enough to keep cycling.

Great! Some of them, like this one, were a bit of a challenge to get going. But once correctly timed, it is quite an interesting engine to run... and different.

You must get the cylinder hot before it will start and there are a couple of easier ways to do that. Saturday I will release a video on how to preheat the engine for easier starting. Also, at the end of this video is an End Screen linking a video showing improved timing and easier starting.

I'm surprised you can't adjust the wick can't be adjusted better so all of the flame, or at least most of it, is sucked into the port so not so much of the fuel is being wasted during operation. With as little that is being sucked in in this video demonstration, it seems like there is way larger of a flame that is needed to run. This is my thoughts based of very little knowledge of how these little engines operate. I saw this engine on a website that sells a bunch of different types of hobby engines, this type of engine, steam engines and 1, 2 and 4 cylinder 4 stroke engines. The 4 stroke engines are really cool the way they are made. Some guys have actually taken the 2 and 4 cylinder engines and custom installed them into 1/8th scale RC cars and trucks. They sound WAY different than a typical nitro fuel RC engines. I am planning on getting the 4 cylinder engine they make and installing it into a pretty large RC boat hull that I got a while back and never built. It was originally intended to be powered by a large brushless motor powered by 8s lipo. Its like 40" long and 12" wide. The 4 cylinder engine is over 3 HP so it should get it going pretty good! Great video! Liked and subscribed.

Looks to me the wick should be slightly below the intake port to get more of the flame to enter. I have a couple horizontal flame lickers that run better that way.

Why should the cylinder get hot, while the air should cool in there?
@michaeljohnson6473
@michaeljohnson6473 3 года назад
Does it use oil or a dry lubricant in the cyclinder?? I recently wore an engine out that used the dry lubricant.
@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 3 года назад
As stated in this video, I used a few drops of light oil in the cylinder, which is what was recommended in the instruction sheet. This is inconsistent between various vacuum engines... some you can use oil... others recommend a dry lubricant. Some engines get so hot, the oil burns up and leaves a gummy mess that needs to be cleaned out once in a while. Remember, these are demonstration or proof-of-concept models and not intended to run for a long time. If you run it until it quits, the oil will probably get burned. When it starts to slow down, shut if off and let it cool down before it stops. Graphite is too coarse to use in these engines and could actually result in wear. This is explained in the SH-02 video.

Ha! Thanks for the 'aluminium' translation!! I have NEVER heard anyone say that (apart from me!) Would it help to warm the cyclinder with a gentle blowtorch, or even lighter flame to cut the time?

Bro what is the circleshape at the top of the head???
@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 4 года назад
There are a number of circle shapes. Around 0:54 the hole in the side of the upper cylinder is the intake/exhaust port. At 2:00 I explain how the engine operates regarding hot gas drawn into the cylinder and then exhaust exiting the cylinder through this port. At 9:50 you can see the fire being drawn into the port and the exhaust gas blowing the fire away from the port. At 10:28 the round brass section is the top of the cylinder inside the outer aluminum clamp. The clamps at the top and bottom of the cylinder hold it, the cooling fins and the frame together and provide attachment points for the rocker arm assembly. Thanks for watching. Please Subscribe! Ron

Does it have any power and what can you attach it to

There is a small drive pulley on the crankshaft. Once the engine is running you could engage a small load using an o-ring drive belt. A clutch would make things work better. These Flame-Licker or Vacuum Engines are intended to be a model demonstration engines. They are Proof Of Concept and are not intended to be run for long intervals. Eventually they become too hot and need to stop and cool down before running again. Wired correctly, it should run one of these with some small LED’s. These “DYANMO’s” are just a 12VDC motor with a pulley on the motor shaft. www.banggood.com/Microcosm-FD4-Model-Dynamo-Motor-For-Steam-Engine-Model-DIY-Project-Part-p-1285534.html?rmmds=search&cur_warehouse=CN www.banggood.com/FD-3-Machined-Dynamo-Small-Generator-for-Steam-Engine-Model-p-1578461.html?rmmds=search&cur_warehouse=CN Thanks for watching. It’s not internal combination so it’s a stirring engine right. No wait you said it’s not a stirring but what’s the difference between a vacuum engine and a sterling engine.
@RonaldWalters2010
@RonaldWalters2010 4 года назад
I don't know what "internal combination" is. :-) It is not an internal combustion engine and it is not a Stirling cycle engine. It is an external combustion or vacuum engine.

Steam engines are also not internal combustion engines and also not stirling engines...stirling engines were invented to eliminate the danger of exploding boilers. There are some great books on the invention and workings of different types of stirling engines

All flame lickers are inefficient. If you get 5% efficiency out of it, you're not doing bad.
