I've been lurking here for just about forever and pretty sure I'm older than most viewers and click "Like" before the video even starts so I don't forget
Your are 12 or so episodes away from the little lady arriving and the excitement/anxiety of departure setting in !! You have came a long way my friend. Good work !!
Hi Mads, I have just been re-watching your video 364, and you talk once again about going to many dark cold places on your boat. Are you sure Ava coming from sunny California will want to spend month after month in freezing cold dark places!! I certainly wouldn't. I know it's none of my business because I won't be coming along! But cold dark places are not everybody's cup of tea. Also, by the way, the phrase is 'belt and braces'! I, like many thousands of your other followers, am really enjoying what you put out. I think you have surprised a lot of us with your expertise and craftsmanship. You could come and work with me any time! Phil
Tank cleaning secret: throw in handfuls of rock salt and just a little water. Shake, shake, rotate, shake. The rock salt is abrasive, like sand. It cleans the tank, and any remains are water soluble, so it all washes out. THEN you flush the tank with alcohol, which pulls out any remaining water.
Mads I wonder if the condensation you had below the freezer location was due to the dryer in use the day before? A vent to outside may be needed if not for the moisture the micro fibers floating around the interior. Just a thought. I as always am impressed with your craftmanship. You are a true artisan Mads. Thanks for sharing.
Mads, Obelix is looking so good, I'm sure it will find a new home quickly and make many good memories for the new owner. It's great to see how quickly the interior of Athena is coming together, I'm sure you'll be under sail soon. Keep it up!
Dam! The fastest 20 minutes ever. Great 👍show. Sadly I have to wait till next Sunday morning for the next one. When you get done with this Boat it will be the best in it's class! CAN'T Wait for the next show. 👍
One night of ice cream is not really a test. You need more test data. Different flavors. Different locations in the freezer. I think you are just to have to eat more ice cream in the name of science.
Regardless of current conditions, always keep an eye on the drier. Never take it for granted. More fires have been started because of that appliance than there's care to tell. Whenever a client asks for one, i abhor the task.
To be safe I think your clothes dryer should be vented to the outside. Dryers are designed to collect moisture and if not transferred to the outside it remains contained. That moisture, you referred to it as condensation in the freezer area, will allow the growth of black mold and mildew. Your fix might just be as easy as running a flexible vent hose through a portal when in use.
That is the first thing I thought of...mold. Which is very harmful, causing serious problems way down the road. What is causing the condensation? The first thing I thought of was that it was from the non-vented dryer pushing warm air through the conduit hole found on the left/aft side of the freezer compartment. Warm air hitting and coldish hull would cause that.
Do you really think Mads would install a dryer in any way but the proper way? For that matter would Mads run a hose out a portal every time the dryer is used? I think not on both issues.
I remember watching the Obelix videos - seeing you back in there she seems so small now !!! I don't know how you have lived with your head to one side for so long! Another week of great progress. The freezer efficiency will get *much* better the more 'frozen stuff' in there. At the moment it is just trying to keep the air down to temp which is hard. ...
The missing humidity from the dryer test was the condensation you found on the hull underneath the freezer space. There is a direct connection through the cable trunking hole. (Never mind, I see you've already answered.)
Great progress, Mads! Good luck with selling Obelix; you've done an honest job of fixing her up for sale and I'm sure that whoever purchases it will know exactly what condition she's in. Again, thanks for the excellent information and your super interesting presentation.
This feels like such a milestone for you. I think it might officially look less like a long term project boat than it looks like a sail boat getting a few things fixed.
First hello from southwest Florida. Second I've finally found someone with OCD worst than mine when it comes to sleeping. But sleeping on the water with the haul slapping the water and birds and crickets and the wind making the rigging bang on the mask and other people's generators you will never hear the dam freezer. Plus there's a female laying next to you, guarantee she snores louder than the freezer. lol
The freezer may make the cabin warmer in hot climates, but you can always fit sea water coils at a later date. The plus side with them is that they are passive so there is no pump/fan to worry about. Looking good though. I wish other boat sellers had the same conscience as you! Well done and great video.
Mads, I wish everyone who sold stuff was as conscientious as you. I generally go in thinking the worst on everything I buy used. The positive to that is I'm never disappointed and get to laugh at the typically amateur hour repairs people have made rather than cry. Good luck on the sale! I don't think you'll need luck if the potential new owner watches your videos they should just gladly hand you the cash you are asking for. :)
Ønsker deg ei riktig God Påske. Båten ser veldig bra ut. Det må bli en flott båt å reise rundt i verden med. Wish you a nice and good week. As always great to follow your work. Best wishes from Jan in Norway
Does anyone else hold their breath in terror every time Mads uses the circular saw on top of his kitchen island fridge? Someone get this man a piece of XPS as a sacrificial surface.
As a veteran of boat refrigerator adventures I basically concur with your decision. We had the isotherm with salt water cooling and pump which basically rusted through because the previous owner didn't change the anode. It worked well but with a 10 year old pump it was a replacement job. We went with a hybrid system which uses air cooling and fresh water cooling via one of our water tanks. Our cold water rises about 1 degree, but I think the air cooling raises about 2°C. No big deal you think? Well when your saloon temperature is 38°C already you may think differently. Of course we could sail north, but that would get hotter because that is where the equator is. Sailing south because it is a bit toasty in the saloon may sound easy, but Mr Weather might have some input on that. All up I think your freezer looks to be a good choice. Thanks for the video Mads. Always appreciated.
Ninety-eight days! You are going to be busy Mads. I think the freezer is just the right size for 50 liters of ice cream and 3 liters of ice for other purposes. Excellent work as usual. Take care, stay well and my best to Ava.
Mads it is all coming along rapidly and post Obelix sale, I am sure you will surge on the remaining task list. Running out of plywood is kinda like a good sign too.😀👍⛵️
The noise of the freezer can probably be dampened a bit more by getting egg crate stile foam and gluing it inside of the freezer open zone to absorb more sound.
Excellent design on the freezer. I was pleased to see that you went with an air-cooled unit. The capacity of your freezer is not much different than our 60qt Engel. The engineering differences between the Isotherm and the Engel are minor. Both have swing compressors. We spent a good portion of last year in the Exuma, Bahamas area and had hard, frozen ice cream, ice cubes and stored meat in our freezer - air-cooled. You will be just fine. With seawater cooled systems, there are five or six systems that must be maintained, before you reach the refrigeration equipment. You will notice very little, if any, heat gain from the freezer. Great job.
Love to watch your progress every week. Must be a good feeling, the stage you are in now. Just building everything and installing all the nice electronic goodies .
In regards to the labeling. Suggest you slip a piece of clear shrink tubing over the label. Then hit it with a heat gun to shrink the clear tubing. This will keep the label from coming off especially if you are in warm climates.
Hi Mads, in order to create a heat convection air stream the compressor compartment should be absolutely separated and well insulated from the freezer compartment and have both an inlet at the bottom of the front panel and an outlet at the height of the compressor.
I suspect your condensation comes from running the dryer without ventilation. The humidity doesn’t get high in the air because it is condensing quickly on the cool hull.
The humidity from me sleeping aboard the boat is higher than when I've been running the dryer (while at work). Condensation is almost impossible to avoid on uninsulated surfaces with a water temp of 6C and rain outside (the condensation was only below the waterline).
Sail Life may be a bit late now now but you can get self dryer dryers which capture water internally so doesn’t vent any moisture. It’s amazing how much water dryers make. We often get 2-3 litres per dry
A empty freezer will cycle more than a full freezer. With the heat from the compressor, you may want to keep an eye on condensation underneath that area. Very Spiffy work though Mads. 👍👍
I've never done it but, one way to clean a tank is to put a length of chain in it. attach the chain with a length of wire so you can get it back out. Use about a 40 cm length for a small tank like you have. Then put in some acetone or even fuel and slosh around. The chain will act like a wire brush and knock loose and gunk and pests etc. Continue till it all comes out clean. I'm sure the way you did it is fine as well. The chain method is more for badly contaminated tanks.
Love how the new freezer worked out for you. The great plywood shortage of 2021 can't slow you down! You did great! Truly looking forward to how it will end up looking with the trim and final touches. Regarding the dampness in the hull... Oh glorious venting from the freezer fan can help that by circulating that area. you're welcome lol. Now you know where that can be routed to.
I live in Brazil, during the 6 months of "summer" air temp is between 20-35C and water temperature is around 30C. Air cooled fridge and freezer work great. Just be sure to vent the hot air out (with fans!!).
FYI Engel makes an extremely efficient 12v/AC top loading chest fridge or freezer, just dial the temp you want. I have used this on a 600w solar setup and it is fun using the sun to make ice cubes. $600 USD ish. Also thermal mass will reduce compressor cycling, fill up the freezer with water jugs when the ice cream runs out.
Starlink internet is supposedly for use at a specific address, maybe Starlink would be interested in a boat install, the phased array antenna is heated and self pointing but probably would need a gimbal, it's about $500 USD for the hardware and $100 USD / month for about 200mb speed.
The condensation was likely from dumping the dryer air into the cabin. A layer of spray foam should help with that, because the freezer fan will draw wet air into the area behind the unit. A 1 15/16" corner guard will cover that big seam and can be trimmed down in the area above the counter top...
15 Min for every hour and a half, is an excellent duty cycle. Air cooled was a great choice with less problems too. Next test is to see how cold it gets with the control turned half way! Minus 15C (+5F) would be a good temp to aim for, -20C (-5F) usually the limit for 134A gas. I got a little freezer down to -28F, I was astounded ,almost cold enough to store Phyzer vaccine LOL, (5 cu.ft draws 50 watts)! You're going to love the possibilities on a hot Caribbean afternoon ! Great work and great video. Cheers
If you find 38c scary you need to avoid the Med. in the summer. 38c is one of the more pleasant cooler days. 40 - 45 is common and I've seen 50+. Leaving the safety of the aircon was rather like getting hit in the face with a baseball bat of heat. Nice work on the vodka chiller. ;)
Dryer fires caused by accumulation of lint & heat are an issue onboard vessels. Of course dying also puts out moisture laden air. Fortunately it is straight shot up to the deck from the dryer and the exit route should be kink free and accessible for lint removal. Assuming you will vent that dryer properly then you can also use that vent to dispose of the heat generated every day by the freezer, which can be considerable, particularly in warm climates.
You are great Mads and made me laugh ROUGHLY 98 days untill Eva gets here 98 days is pretty precise oldboy maybe next time hours minutes seconds lol Regards
Great install of the freezer, I thought it would make more noise with the front installed (resonance)... :-D Under 100 days already, time is flying! Thx for the vid, as always! :-D
The surface of the hull chilled by seawater creates a condensation plate exactly the same as a chilled coil in a dehumidifier. Your dryer's water vapor output is condensing on those cold surfaces. Numerous solutions available to you. In ADDITION to those you might install a dehumidifier in your HVAC system for health and comfort.
make sure you keep your batteries as high as you can, or have a back-up. If there is flooding, and they get wet, they will not run you pumps, compounding the problem. Just a thought!
Down the road it might reduce noise & vibration by placing a rubber strip between the compressor and the plywood shelf. Nevertheless good workmanship as always.
Who knows But thank whatever or who ever you got it.....Ive been waiting to see how spiffy your modified lift / brackets worked out....I liked the space saving idea myself. Damn glD to see it be transformed from a work bench to a freezer/ refrigerator. Got to have cold beer.
I just installed a very similar isotherm fridge and have changed the fan to a more silent version and also added a 3€ fan thermometer control unit from ebay.
When I am installing cabinets, I will scribe a line where a counter top meets the wall and use a belt sander to sand down to the line- not a saw. It gives me much better results. You might want to try that near the freezer wall.
I really love how it came out the freezer seems to be great. You can improve opon it at a later date... But give yourself a break you do a class job!! New sub an am really enjoying the content... ✌🏻💗😊❣️
