Sail Life - Making her shine (fixing the paint job) and installing port lights - DIY sailboat refit

Last week I painted the deck of my 38 ft sailboat. This video is the primer. This weekend I fix the mistakes in the paint job by sanding the surface with 800 grit and then using 3M perfect-it Heavy Cutting Compound. The paint used was Sigmadur 550.

"Oh cruel fate to be kicked in the nads thusly" - I had to pause and mop up the tea! I am currently binge watching your refit and just want to echo the majority of comments here, you rock! You exemplify all the can do qualities I am looking for PLUS the humour makes always interesting. Thank you for being you! :) Oh and yes, don't hate that we have a bigger caulk than you!

Hi welcome, welcome beautiful sanding people. Welcome to the Athena theater and greetings from Denmark to the viewers all over the world, thank you for sanding, thank you for having me sanding. It is a great honor to be invited back for a sanding time. It’s a great honor to be here among so many talented polishers, special the Brits with their oversized cocking tools, congratulations to you, you made it on my channel, we’re at the Premier of Shiny Athena. Some of you will be going home tonight with a blind eye, what could be better than that? Nothing, right? .... mmhh sand in my eyes

Your supposed to use the plastic or cardboard dowel with the buff wheel to align it when you stick it on the hook and loop pad. Also ahh the joys of discovering a great buffer and how to buff out a boat or paint job! Nothing gives me more satisfaction than making a crusty boat look nice and glossy!
@garysouza2277

I know it's too late now, but in the future I suggest you take a countersink bit and put a little "notch" on the outside of each hole. Just a touch with the bit. That will essentially make an "O" ring of caulk around each screw, and prevent the screws from leaking. Been doing that to every hole I've ever caulked for over 40 years and have never had one leak. Do it to your cleats, windlass, winches holes- anything that has a hole and is bolted or screwed to the boat. And if you need to tighten something, hold the screw from the top and just turn the nut. As long as the 'O"ring seal isn't broken it won't leak

one tip, keep that polishing pad clean, get you a spur for cleaning while in use, then wash as the instructions say. i used to wash mine in the washing machine, some i just soaked in hot water. one little spec of dirt in that pad will ruin your day.

I can't wait to see the companionway slats and hatch being opened each video when you open up Athena at the start of your work day. I miss that sequence when you are inside the shed. Your video stylisms are addicting, like the splash sound as the logo appears in the beginning if your videos, and the unboxing sequences. Can you save that aluminum cleat you nicked last week? The anodizing was probably compromised. But the cleats are going to get beat up IRL anyhow, once you are living on the boat full-time

What a difference a few pieces of hardware can make! It really helps you to imagine how beautiful she's going to look when finished. I can hardly wait! All the hard labor you put in has shown itself to be well worth it! Ava must be going crazy with excitement seeing how well the boat is coming out and becoming more anxious for the day you two can sail off together. I have always said I like the re-fit videos better than the sailing videos, but I have to admit I am anxious too, to see you enjoy the fruits of all your hard labor! Wonderful job!

Sand with 320 1st, then 600, then 600, then 1500 and buff that and it will look perfect. You can buff 800 with good results also. I do this for a living for over 35 years. Make sure you don't catch your buffers cord when your working, it will rip right out. Looks good so far.

👍 I used to hang out at an Auto body shop, the guys there always pre soaked the sandpaper for a short time before sanding and sometimes put a drip of dish soap in the spray bottle or dip bucket.
@RonKris
@RonKris 6 лет назад
Yes, the drop of dish soap make the water less viscous.
@davidp8594
@davidp8594 6 лет назад
Much less hydroplaning with the drop of dish soap.
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella 5 лет назад
@@RonKris I think the main benefit is it decreases the surface tension which makes the water much more inclined to wet the surface, and another benefit is that it helps prevent the dust clogging the abrasive paper because it washes off in real time

The phrase "They'll never see it from the beach' comes to mind. Great job . I hope it's really good paint! Paint is so much better than gelcoat for gloss retention and UV resistance. With all your (electric) sanding at least you don't have the drone of commercial pneumatic tools droning in your ears..... So at least you will get a good test of the watertightness of your bedding procedure for the portlights all winter long, fingers cross you have no leaks! Cheers Warren

I think it's actually quite helpful to have a smooth shiny finish: it lasts quite a lot longer (especially in UV, because most of the energy reflects away) and it's much easier to keep it clean. That's why new cars are so easy to keep looking nice, compared with old ones.

Hi mads - thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. I know you're not fond of tarping but, after all the work you've done to spiffy-up your deck, it would be a such shame to let UV start destroying it so soon after by leaving it exposed. I own a 1977 fiberglass sailboat here in Toronto, Canada. We haul out for winter in late October and launch in April of each year. For the 24 years I've owned my boat I've always covered her completely for the winter with a large tarp. That's six months less UV destruction each year and the difference really shows - her gelcoat is gleaming still.

I’m not telling you your business, but I need to say that your box slicing montage gives me the chills. If I were opening that many boxes, on a regular basis, I’d find a better knife for that task. There’s no reason to use that big of a knife and you lose control as you move your hand further from the surface you’re cutting. A very small blade will only cut you a little bit if it ever makes contact with flesh. I like the videos and I’d hate to have one follow you to get stitches. Your work is awesome and your attitude toward it serves it well.
