Sailboat Repair FAIL: Tried to fix it, ended up Breaking it. [EP107]

In this weeks episode we go through some stereotypical Sailboat maintenance shenanigans, and by this we mean, trying to fix something and end up breaking it. Unfortunately for us we discovered the repair had not worked at a very inopportune moment, under sail....
However in true cruiser fashion we improvised using our port side winch until we reached our destination in Grenada where Khiara immediately set about fixing the problem.
Despite having a few hiccups along the way we had a riper of a sail down to Grenada from Carriacou arriving with plenty of daylight to spare and a super convenient anchorage waiting for us.

EVERY "MECHANIC" EVER has put parts in backwards or left parts out (leftover screws anyone). Having done this, once, and corrected it, I'll bet you won't do it a second time AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES FOR A GOOD MECHANIC. Be at peace with your skills.

Khiara, you should absolutely be a mechanic! You fixed one problem with the holes with much creativity then you found out the problem with the pawls and fixed that. Plus the fact that at the end of it all the winch was stripped cleaned and re-lubricated and now works much better. Great job. Winch looks like a Lewmar so a phone call or email to them could get you a replacement top washer to anywhere in the world especially to a Caribbean island which you probably find has a place you can use poste restrante shipping by air in pretty quick time. Lewmar may well even have a contact/agent on the island.

Awesome Khiara not only looks amazing, she is a master repair technician, captain of a wonderful yacht, able to keep her crew in line and on his toes, just love it.. I am currently following two dozen sailing channels and the Millennial Falcon is number 1. The most telling point to me is the loving interactions between the two of you, and of course Khiara's always smiling face. I guess I could praise Adam, but I'm not into guys, and I'm jealous.. Take care and keep each other safe, looking forward to more.

I took a test trying to get into the navy years and years ago and they told me that I could not ever be trained as a Mechanic. Hey Khiara, don't put yourself down, you are quite capable as a mechanic, I know a lot of people who would not be able to get a winch back together and working and you did an excellent job of identifying the fault so you could fix it ! A lot of people would have been scratching their heads for a long time and probably had to ask for help, I would be tempted to put a bit more lube on than you did but there is probably some good reason why you didn't overload it with grease.

After a mishap, I now cut a hole in the bottom of a box big enough to clear the base of the winch. Then slide the box over the winch and tape the box to the deck. After that, I disassemble the winch. If anything (like a bearing) unexpectedly slides out, the box has a good chance of catching it. I can say... Lewmar roller bearings bounce twice before going overboard.

A good chance to learn to sail without winches for emergency training sake. Get it wrapped around a cleat and as tight as you can then quickly luff up just a bit to get it tighter, using the tensioned part of the line to push sideways then taking up slack as you let it out. As for the winch I blame the engineers that designed the parts so they could go in backwards!

As Mr. Mithan pointed out the loaded line should be tangent to the drive gear. You'll wear things out quickly since this is not the case. You can always drill new holes in the top cover after rotating it 90*. New top plates are readily available as are pawls and springs. Think of mistakes as education, not so much as screwing up.

Hi Khiara, don't knock yoyrself about the winch, you are doing a fantastic job on the mechanical R & M. I've seen tradies with a lower success rate than you. I read earlier someone suggested taking photo's of the part you are repairing as you go along. Good idea, you'll only have to do that the first time. Remember if you make a bo-bo once and fix it that's gaining experience. If you make the same bo-bo a second time that's stupidity. That is one thing you ain't.
