You guys are great! It is a great pleasure to sail on an older boat. I had a 1960 Alden way back in the 1990’s and I learned so much and had so much fun. I was horrified by the crack in the bow. I wish I could have told you my secret sooner. If you ever have any trouble with it, the old glass should be wet out with mek just before you lay the new glass. Just until it gets tacky. Then the repair has both a chemical and mechanical bond to the hull. Also make sure the resin is iso-thallic. It will resist blistering and absorbtion. You did a great job and maybe you were told about the trick. If not it may be fine but do keep a check on it. If you ever see the slightest delam go ahead and redo it. Also give the new glass a couple of weeks on the hard to completely cure. It helps avoid absorbtion. That mek trick makes the old and new glass become one as if no damage had ever occurred. That can be a big deal at sea. I just saw a new boat with a “crash box”. Its a water tight bulkhead in the bow. So if there is ever a collision youre safe. Just glad you made it safe. Love the autopilot!

Cannot think why we thought you had an auto pilot! It is going to make things so much easier for you guys. Be sure to keep any furious metal away from the control head. Cannon balls, bags of drill bits, bits and bobs etc. :-) Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Getting rust off tools ect with vinegar needs to soak for at least 24 hrs .But definitely works !

Brandy, you are incredible! You organize tool boxes, clean the rusty tools and make great little storage bags for the tools! Wow! Good job! Beau is a very lucky man. You are very creative. Loved the bags for the tools. The Autohelm is a great addition to your boat. Would it have been possible to mount the motor drive at the base of the steering pedestal? Just thinking of conserving space.

Suggestion: Buy an extra belt! It will break 2,000 miles away from land, in a storm, when you are most depending on it. Also called Murphys law, which I'm sure extends to water. LOL!

Boy, oh boy! I have used an Autohelm 3000, which was new in 1987, since I bought my Catalina 34 in '91. It is still working!!! It steered me as cross the Pacific, San Diego to Hawaii, in 95. It is still working fine!!! I had to repair a power wire a couple times, but otherwise - Old Reliable! You're lucky to have it. Congratulations.

Try using Apple Cidar vinegar next time! During our Corona summer, we cleaned out our garage. Found a bunch of finishing nails that were really rusty. Google suggested ACV. I soaked them for a few days and they came super clean! Amazing stuff.

Brilliant addition to the boat. I have the ST2000 version for a tiller and wouldn't be without it. In fact I liked it so much that I eventually invested in a wind vane steering system as well. You will soon wonder how you managed without it.

I had one of those on my Boat.. I am so sorry for you..they are very prone to failure..you need a wind Vane Auto Pilot that attaches directly to your rudder

Anything is better than hand-steering 😉 and if it fails, we know how to steer the boat, that’s all we have known. Wind vane is on the dream list though for sure! Feeling extra grateful for the gentleman that gifted us this.

Hi there you two, greetings from South African. Haven't finished watching today's video yet, just wanted to give some advice, take it or leave it. Firstly try using Electrolysis with Salt Water (plenty in the sea) mixed with vinegar. Secondly once finished (I have left it overnight before) neutralize the acidity with window cleaner and bicarbonate of soda, you can also rub it down with steel wool and a brass wire brush. Once dry spray with something like WD40 and if the tool is to be stored you can heat it a little with a hairdryer and rub bees wax on the steel surfaces to seal them. Didn't know about Deisel? Does that prevent rusting or remove the rust? We do have some water proof boxes, but we needed some bag because they squeeze into small areas better.

Try spraying them with WD-40 when they come out of the jar. That should help keeping the rust coming back.

WD40 is good initially but dries in 2 days or so. Best antitrust lubricant is LPS 2 inside it won’t dry for about two years.

It most definitely would be, especially since we are all electric and it’s on our wishlist. But since this was gifted to us, we will use it until we can save up for the wind vane.

Hi, my first comment here. Could the prbl with the Autohelm be that you mount the display to close to the motor? Motors have strong magnets and magnets are not friend with caliber addicted sensors. Just saying... Thanks for shearing!
