The park shown at 18:47 has a gazebo. The top of that gazebo contains the dome that used to top the Saint John General Hospital, that was located on Waterloo St. The building was demolished by implosion on Sunday, December 10, 1995 at 1:45PM local time. The dome was salvaged, kept in storage for 4 1/2 years, and was re-dedicated as the 'Millenium Dome' in May 2000. In the dome's base, there are time capsules that have different artifacts/pictures of locals that were in Saint John in 2000. They won't be opened until 2100. A picture of my family is buried deep in one of them, Les and Wendy. =)

FYI The House for sale on Rocky Terrace was one of the Irving houses - I think Jim's, son of KC Irving. KC's house is on Mount Pleasant Ave., the big historic Victorian mansion with gates on the street. In his older years he moved to Lighthouse Road in Bermuda and when in SJ stayed in a condo on the top floor of the JD Irving building.

Great video - but you must show the actual Mount Pleasant Ave (where Irving lives) next time :) Mount Pleasant Ave and Douglas Ave used to be the suburbs the wealthier city dwellers moved to to escape the chaos and coal pollution of uptown. Also, Sewell Street is pronounced “Sue Ull” The house I grew up in on Mount Pleasant Ave was a wedding gift a sea captain gifted his daughter and new groom. Interior could not be replicated today - hand rubbed cherry wood ceiling in library and craftsmanship undertaken throughout. If I had to convey why Saint John is the best choice in NB, it’s because it can be inspiring with its architecture and public spaces. It has a soul. It expanded rapidly in the right time in history that gave us this gem. That’s why it feels like a small, big city - as opposed to a very large, small city like Moncton. Nothing beats the thick fog uptown with church bells ringing, echoing off the historic buildings - you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Victorian London with Jack the Ripper lurking.
@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 3 года назад
Your description is spot on. We always think of Saint John as a small big city, but had not orated Moncton the way you did; we just called it full of strip malls and chain restaurants. You are so right. Sorry about Mt Pleasant ave, however, when we did our pre-video reconnaissance, it was closed to traffic for road construction and the access from Rockwood Park was also torn up. We'll do it someday, but today was just too nice not to make this video.
@travelport7868

@@WeLoveSaintJohn you’ll have some sights to look forward to - Harriet Irving memorial park; KC Irving’s estate; the Red Rose Tea mansion (it originated in SJ - the factory was the curved brick building as you exit harbour bridge into uptown); Parks Street stone estate. Be sure to drive up Duncraggan Court to see the stone homes. Trivia question for you - many rock walls along Mount Pleasant Ave and churches were built with stones from Britain. How and why did they end up here in Saint John?

I'd like to hear more about the relative cost of living in NB. I've looked at several cost comparison sites and none of them mention differences in provincial income taxes. You could end up paying $400 a month more in NB compared to Ontario, so if you tack that onto your rent, a $1000 a month rental in NB would compare to one in Ontario, say in London, for $1400, not such a big advantage if any.
@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 2 года назад
All tax brackets vary greatly amongst all provinces so a comparison site would be unable to cater to every individual case. I will say that if you're paying $400 more per month in income tax in NB vs Ontario, it's very unlikely that you're renting a $1000 per month home.
@mitchmccrimmon1009
@mitchmccrimmon1009 2 года назад
@@WeLoveSaintJohn It's nothing to do with the amount of rent. If you have taxable income of roughly $70 to 80 K, you will be paying around $400 more a month than in Ontario, so if you rent a $800 place in NB, that's like a $1200 place in Ontario if you add the tax. Also worth noting that NB's sales tax is 15% while Ontario's is 13%. NB may have other attractions but if you want to consider cost of living, you have to look at these tax differences.
@mitchmccrimmon1009
@mitchmccrimmon1009 2 года назад
I used to live in London, ON, now spending a few years in Panama. I thought NB would be less expensive than London but I feel it has 3 strikes against it: 1. Higher provincial income tax than ON, 2. Higher sales tax - 15% vs 13% and 3. Among the highest property tax rates in the country. WHY. I'm not an economist but it may be because the lower population base in all Maritime provinces means needing to tax more to provide services that are nearly as expensive as in other provinces. Presumably, ON can have lower taxes because of the much greater population.
@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 2 года назад
@@mitchmccrimmon1009 Ontario doesn't have lower taxes, they have lower tax rates in bigger cities because the price of homes is so high. If average home prices in NB were 1.5 million dollars, then I'm sure we would have low tax rates as well. It doesn't actually take an economist to understand that.
