I just want to say I took your advice and asked for a ridiculous amount in my salary negotiation and they increased my total comp by nearly 50K!!!! 10k increase in base, 10k sign on, and another 25k in equity! I just couldn’t believe it! Thank you so much!

I received a salary offer yesterday morning and the offer came as very matter of fact from a university, with the idea that was it: take it or leave it. I had watched your video and remember your acronym for fear. I have already retired once and was afraid that because of my age, I needed to accept the initial offer. However, I very politely thanked them for the offer and expressed my concern about the number and presented my case where the market average was higher. That same day they returned with an offer that was 10% more. You did that for me and I appreciate you so much.

Sonal, these tips are excellent and really worked. I was offered the upper range of their salary and I increased them by 15k above the upper range. They said they could bring up my base salary by 5k and give me 2k sign on bonus. I told them i really know my worth and the lowest i could take was 10k above original offer. they went back and discussed it, and finally I ended up getting 10k more as I requested. I basically mentioned my desired salary is $xx (5k higher than their range), they were pretty firm about their range, so I said "I understand this has to work for you as well, on that basis, the lowest I could accept is $xx (their highest point). I ended up getting the offer with the highest point of that range. I am very happy and grateful, originally I was desperate and willing to go for their lowest budget... !! THANK YOU !!

Thank you so much for your advice. I gained the confidence needed to negotiate my salary after a job offer, although I didn’t accept the job because they didn’t accept my offer. I do feel great because I ASKED. sometimes there will be losses and you have to be grateful. The job just wasn’t for you. The employer wanted to pay me below the average market salary it was very sad.

I did most of the things mentioned in the video in 2016 at an interview with a publishing giant where I was made to wait for over 2 hours after grueling hours of 4 successive interviews from team manager to CEO (all in the same day). When it came to salary negotiation, I was told to give in to whatever they were offering since it was a "brand" and would go a long way on my CV. While I agreed to that, I just could not do with zero increment on my previous salary despite the organization's name. I was told I'd be contacted but there was no communication from their end. I called a day later and was told that someone else was hired for lesser salary than I was being offered. That was a lone experience, but stands out to the day.

I'll openly admit, I don't have so much experience to say all this is necessarily true. But what I definitely can say is that this video puts you into a right mindset to approach a business situation. And that in itself is very useful and can only be viewed positively by any interviewer

This really helped..For me it was not Last day of the week but last interview..I looked down and thought for a moment as you said, they were all looking at me.First they refused, the second try was successful. I told them I need the amount to manage my conveyance (which was true..try not to lie because if they find out in any way about the truth you can lose the Job) . I was polite the whole time and asked them in a requesting way.

I have only had one company rescind a job offer, and it was after a month of back and fourth regarding intellectual property rights. HR team wanted to allow me to amend my contract to identify previous inventions as my ip, while the contract stated that everything I had worked on prior and during employment is their intellectual property. I even knew the CEO as I was in a joint discord group with him, and we'd speak often. When it got sent to their lawyer, they took personal offense and refused to make any changes, which forced them to rescind the offer. In hindsight, this even being a problem was kind of insane, likely very uncommon situation.

I got an offer during recession / financial crash in 2009... But due to fear I ended up with 20% lesser salary than I expected and asked for... Thank you so much for this video, I won't repeat my mistake after watching this...

Just wanted Thank you for this content. Finalized my offer letter after negotiation using this info today. I just realized a very powerful thing today - if you don't ask, you wont get :) I asked a figure, company offered 15% lesser, I was respectful and calm and politely declined the offer and told that I accept the mid point of the range I have quoted :) Company came back within a day with a new offer.

Thanks for this video Sonal. I have been out in the job market after 9 years in the same company I had joined as a fresher. I saw this video after I accepted my first offer. It's almost 3 times my current salary and I was overwhelmed at first. Then I realised just how less I was actually making. Currently in negotiations with a second company, followed your tips throughout the process. They have effectively removed the personal component from the process, by making candidates create a profile on their portal and giving offer letters through that portal itself. My only contact is the 3rd party recruiter who was hired by the company to find a candidate. Still holding hope, since I am employing your tips of acting as if he is on my team.

I tried your suggestion and stuck to the basic hike I would need from the HR. HR called me and said they cannot increase further (well, I had asked for a fair hike), and said they will look for another candidate. So now you have one case where HR took back the offer.This was with Standard Chartered bank, Bangalore. I liked the video and it makes sense!

Generally doesn’t work in Bangalore. It’s almost always take it or leave it. Only time wherein the companies revise your offer is when you show them the other offer you have already.

I just want to say thank you so much I followed your tips and got 10k more and a better title, I never negotiated before so I was nervous but felt great coz I knew I deserve more. Thank you!

Yes, always be polite. Even if you don't accept the offer, you may deal with the person again down the road. I've had recruiters call me a few months later for other, higher compensated positions. The biggest thing to remember about salary is that is what will be your base for years to come, unless things change (education or experience, for example). Lets say that you accept an offer for $50k/year. If we assume a 5% per year pay raise, Starting year 4 you will be at $57,881/year. But if you push for 10% more up front, or $55k/year then starting year 4 you will be at $63,669/year. In year 4 you decide to get a new job. Your base salary expectation (current plus 10%) would be $70k/year (if you start the first job at $55k/year) or $63.7k/year (if you started first job at $50k/year). I find it baffling how many people don't negotiate pay, whether it's your initial offer or an offered pay raise. Even getting 5% more at start is like getting a pay raise, before you start working. They don't realize that pay raises are an offer that you either accept or don't accept. Pay raises are compounded interest. Every dollar more now means many more dollars down the road. Always counter offer pay raises! You will either get an amount more acceptable to you or know its time to look for a new job. Remember that you are THE salesperson for you. You, your skills, and experience are on the market. Fight for what you are worth! While it's true that other compensation can help "bridge the gap", they never fully replace salary because you salary increases with compounded interest. Sure a $2000 sign on bonus and $3000 moving allowance "bridges the gap" between a $50k/year and $55k/year salary, starting year 2 and onwards you will be behind. Plus a moving allowence isn't compensation. If a company offers to pay your share of medical insurance, I would count that as salary, assuming that it's for as long as you work for the company and the policy doesn't increase and the deductible doesn't go up. If your share would be $250/month that equates to $3,000/year. Plus you might not pay income taxes on that amount. It's likely that your share would go up by 10% or more a year. This us probably better than your salary pay raise. If the company has matching 401k, then a bigger salary means a higher match. If the company matches 5%, at $50k/year that is $2500 vs $2750 with $55k/year. I've seen companies offer different tiers on their 401k programs. This could be a higher match at higher salary tiers or less vesting time at higher salary tiers. What salary you accept has a huge impact on you compensation many years down the road. I've even heard of people being promoted because their salary increased above the maximum allowed for their job title. One person told me that their annual salary increase that they negotiated caused such a promotion. Their new job title's minimum pay was about $2k/year more than they negotiated their pay raise at. In effect they got a double pay raise. As a real life example. I had several years of medical issues that prevented me from working. When I was able to work I found myself in a horrible situation. I was not in my field for over 3 years, which meant that I couldn't get hired for a job equivalent to my 15+ years of experience. Nor could I get a job in a starter position because I was "over-qualified". No one would hire me in my field using one or both reasons. I even had responses of "over-qualified" for a mid-range position and "out of the market too long". My wife convinced me to work in her field. At least my years of supervisory experience allowed me to start as a supervisor. I quickly received promotions, finally getting a location manager position, the same level as my wife. When my wife was hired by the company as a location manager she accepted their offer and always accepted the pay raise offers. I fought for a higher starting salary and my pay raises. After 5 years my salary exceeded hers even though she had over 12 years more experience than I did and her location had significantly more sales. That's how important your initial salary and pay raises are.

This video is gem❤ In a recent negotiation, I faced a recruiter who seemed very determined on getting me onboarded for a package which was 5K Euros less than my MAN (Minimum Acceptance Number) in Germany. At first, she did not seem to be in the same team because I heard "Sorry, this is not possible" and other upfront decline to my polite attempt to negotiate at least 10 times, which was a little frustrating. But after the final negotiations, the Hiring Manager surprised me by adding a couple thousand euros to the annual compensation package that was agreed upon. It is tough to negotiate with some recruiters, but as you said, sticking to your ground makes every tough conversation worth it.

So I was able to use this and it helped me a lot! Please don’t fear to negotiate! Apparently it actually impresses the hiring manager!

Excellent video. Well crafted with so many valuable points. Only thing I would add: If you are in the United States, ~40 states have passed state laws making it illegal for prospective employers to ask about your salary history during the interview process. The very goal was to promote equal pay among the workforce for the same or comparable jobs. If your state has passed such law making it illegal, you absolutely have the right to refuse to disclose your current salary. Otherwise, your prospective employer will simply give you a structure or multiplier based off your current salary, and then it will become 100x more difficult to negotiate. (ie. if you make 50K, they will give a firm number of 60K, and justify that you are making 20% more)

I just had my 8th round with a MD. He asked me what is the my expectations and told him I saw this salary range on Glassdoor for the same position for the same company. He became furious saying this is way above the expectations and that data is all wrong since all data is kept confidential. He became more rude even when I said that we can further discuss on this and I am willing to negotiate. But he said it's difficult, that they will call me back. This was all very heartbreaking as this was the 8 round and I was not prepared for salary negotiations at this point, as I was under the impression that would be the last step with the HR. And before this all my 7 rounds were spot on. 💔
