Writer-director Emerald Fennell follows up her Oscar-winning "Promising Young Woman" with another social satire full of luscious style and biting wit. "Saltburn" finds Barry Keoghan's Oxford scholarship student ingratiating himself with an aristocratic classmate and his family at their sprawling estate for the summer. We have a spoiler-free review here, but there's so much to talk about that we also did a separate, in-depth spoiler conversation, so be on the lookout for that. The excellent cast includes Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Archie Madekwe, Alison Oliver and Carey Mulligan. In theaters in limited release Nov. 17, opening wider Nov. 22.

I haven't seen this yet, but I find the "we have seen this kind of film before" criticism to be used so selectively that it frustrates me when it is the main focus of discussion. There will be plenty of films released in Oscar season trying to do the same old thing that won't get targeted with that same criticism.

One thing about the reviews on this movie. My friend hadnt seen reviews - i saw the preview video with Ben and heard the "talented mr ripley" line for the review and its quite spoilerific as he had no idea. He thought the family was going to eat Barry Keoghan or do him harm and found the movie surprising. We had a great time. I almost wish I hadnt known the Talented Mr Ripley take before I saw this. so... there's that.

As someone who hadn't seen any of the other films mentioned, i still came out of Saltburn disappointed. It wasn't a bad film, just not really what i wanted. And for what it was, the execution left much to be desired. It is like a mismash of about five other films, except that they are all way better. Interesting that it gets rave reviews from many although lots of people also hate it. The script feels like it was dashed off in an afternoon in the pub, there are several massive plot holes, a drive across half of England on country roads without the passenger noticing, dead bodies piling up and nobody thinking to ask why. Just a nasty and pointless movie, also predictable after about half way through, yet drags on for ages. Great acting it is true, but as they say the good bits are not original and the original bits are not good.

Agreed, the Story isn't the most original and has been done before in several variations. But if that is a major flaw for a film then we have to discount 98.7% of all movies. Very few movies have actually new ideas or stories. Or at least interesting new story fragment recombinations. Most movies are good enough to exist just based on the writing, cast, cinematography, tone. soundtrack or any combination thereof. Looking forward to the spoiler review.

Saltburn: A Mesmerizing Satire of Wealth and Extravagance, Fennell's Masterpiece Delivers a Visual and Emotional Feast I just saw Emerald Fennell's latest movie, "Saltburn," and wow, it's an absolute knockout! A modern Great Gatsby! This film's visual richness & script brilliantly satirizes Oxford/British wealth and extravagance while uncovering the depths of its characters in a way that's just captivating. It's like watching a train wreck you can't turn away from, with each scene revealing more about what's really going on. The acting is across the board truly top-notch - absolutely one of the best ensemble performances I've seen this year. Rosamund Pike is phenomenal, and Alison Oliver shines bright. Carey Mulligan's cameo? Simply unforgettable. And Barry Keoghan? He's outdone himself, delivering a performance that's bound to get Oscar buzz. What really struck me was how the film takes themes that might seem repulsive on the surface and turns them into a mesmerizing display of artistry. The aesthetics, acting, and writing all come together perfectly, making even the most grotesque scenes somehow relatable. That bathtub scene? It had me feeling a mix of emotions I still can't quite explain. The tone of the movie is dark but compelling, with every cast member bringing their A-game. And the score? Absolutely majestic. Fennell has outdone herself with this one. After this and "Promising Young Woman," I'm convinced I'll watch anything she directs. I'm also betting on Oscar nominations for Production Design and Costume Design. And a special shoutout for including "Murder on the Dancefloor" in the soundtrack - that song was my jam in elementary school! The movie is a rollercoaster of emotions - it's funny, dark, twisted, and utterly captivating. I found myself laughing, gasping, and even shrieking alongside everyone else in the theater. Fennell's unique and inventive approach really shines, making "Saltburn" a film that begs for multiple viewings. As a movie lover, I left the cinema completely amazed and satisfied. For anyone who loves cinema, this is a must-watch. Emerald Fennell has really cooked up something special with "Saltburn."

Spoilers ahead. Promising Young Woman was much better than Saltburn. While both controversial, at least Carey Mulligans' character did her revenge tour without hurting anyone or killing anyone. Also, the guy who killed her did not get away with it at the end. In Saltburn, Barry Keoghans' character was just a mentally ill (in a violent, manipulative, destructive way) and he got away with killing at least three family members. I am hoping Fennells' third movie is closer to Promising Young Woman than Saltburn.
@yabeebay

99% agree with Alonso - if women directors are going to claim greatness by copying previous great films by male directors, then it is hardly going to further their cause...if they have one. Talented Mr Ripley was all over it, which meant that the supposed surprises when they finally revealed themselves were telegraphed almost from the beginning by the comparison. The 'gross' scenes did nothing to progress the storyline, and seemed to be more a test of how far an actor would go to prove their artistic credentials. This film was not for me, purely because I had seen what I wanted to see, before, and the rest were scenes I didn't want to see. Where I disagree with Alonso is that I AM mad with this movie, it wasted over 2 hours of my life.

I enjoyed this up to a certain point towards the end which involved a car journey. Up to that point Barry Keoghan's character was our eyes and ears in this world of ostentatiousness and decadence and casual cruelty. We watched him as he negotiated himself through this world. @@BreakfastAllDay Yes, the Talented Mr Ripley was better and more believable. There is no way that kid would have walked off with that estate. The previous owner was Knighted, old money, the family that was left would have contested, and there would have been some sort of investigation into the poisoning. It's just not that believable. However Rosemund Pike's performance was excellent per usual and the other actors. Barry running around being a sociopath was better than his sociopath in Killing of a Sacred Deer. Me, too. The final act (or two) undid whatever I might've liked along the way. Solid cast, though.

There are no original ideas, there is nothing new under the sun. Alfonso is going to have to let go of expecting something that isn’t familiar. It’s all familiar. Especially if you watch film for a living. You can find something derivative in every single movie being made today. It’s really just a cop out to say it’s familiar or been done before when it’s all been done before.

But honestly, this was a very familiar. Very. Almost predictably familiar.

Jacob Elordi gives me lost soul tea. Like when I see him I see Jacob Elordi, I don’t see a chameleon actor. He would do great being a host like Ryan Seacrest.

@@BreakfastAllDay I had not seen Mr Ripley or known this had similarities, nor did i see a trailer, so i mainly loved the ride it took me on. I always felt like i was in capable and bold hands. I liked how it challenged me as a filmgoer to spend time with a character this odd, this complex, and find out what exactly it is he is up to. The whole cast is wonderful, i thought the script is clever (especially if you go in blind) and it’s absolutely strikingly beautiful as well. Style and substance boing together wonderfully for 2 hours leading to an audacious ending that you just can’t look away from. Feels like the best parts of Ingrid Goes West, Parasite and Joker. Most jazzed i’ve left a film in years.

I really liked it until the ending “twist” which i hated and felt it undermined his entire character and sorta contradicted a lot of the good will that was built up through the movie.

Couldn't stand this. Emerald Fennell is far too mediocre a writer and director to be this self-satisfied giving us The Talentless Mr. Ripley. Every "squirm or giggle" moment just resulted in a groan.

@thefilmseeker I am with you. Fennel is a parade of mediocrity. Mr Ripley is a factually well done film. Can't stand the comparison. God...like does she have the patience and restraint (or talent) to actually create some longing? No she does not..she just throws cum at the screen to scream THIS IS LONGING at the audience who should be insulted not by the "debauchery" (oh, please...give me PSH's Freddie Miles every day instead of these boring people) but by the laziness of the thing. This versus the chess scene in Ripley. The chess scene, the train scene, the jazz scenes.

Alfonso is spot on here, Promising Young Woman SUCKED. This movie was ok but so simple & obvious.

THIS MOVIE IS HORRENDOUS!!!!!! IT IS A GOOSEBUMPS VERSION OF MR. RIPLEY. OBVIOUS, ON THE NOSE AND THE PROTAGONIST LACKS APPEAL AND A COMPELLING MOTIVATION. THE ENDING IS AN AMWAY TRAINWRECK. SHOCK WITHOUT PURPOSE ISN'T SHOCK AT ALL. IT IS LIKE A ZOOMERS GUIDE TO CRUEL INTENTIONS. #BLAH

I'm in the same boat as Alonzo when it comes to Promising Young Woman. That movie was so overrated and most likely because it feeds the hunger of woke feminazis. Fennell is also overrated.
@BluePrada
@BluePrada 9 месяцев назад
The terms you use like woke and feminazis clearly show a bias pre-viewing it. I’m on the other end but would still say it’s not a good movie.
