Saltcoats Castle is little known and difficult to see from any distance away. Yet it stands just half a mile to the south of Gullane in East Lothian.
There is an attractive legend that the land here was granted to Peter Livingstone as a reward for hunting down and killing the last wild boar in Scotland that had been terrorising Gullane.

You have to be careful in that overgrown courtyard. I visited the place a few years ago and stumbled across an open well that's difficult to see because of all the vegetation. It's wide enough to fall into.

I made the mistake of going out the back of the castle to the right back to the path, there are hundreds of rabbit holes, I was lucky to escape without a broken ankle.

Climbed all over Saltcoats Castle when I was a boy in the 1960s especially the Doocot for pigeons. The rat of a famer Trainner was allways chasing me off but never got hold of me. I found loads of coins and other artifacts in and around.

Hi David, yes I really enjoyed filming at Saltcoates, it just felt so unspoiled, but the long grass was a nightmare with all the rabbit holes. 👍

Sorry, I have no idea, but there is a farm about 500M from the castle as you come out of Gullane, they may know, good luck and let me know if you find anything. 👍

I thought it was from the IX or X century!

Hi Cordelia, looking at the various sources of reference I have come across, they all point to 1590, although it appears that a panel above one of the doors has had the date crudely changed to 1390.
