To avoid tripping a GFI circuit, try a computer grade power bar, one with a surge protector. Plug that into the GFI socket and the variable speed pump into the surge protected socket on the bar. The capacitance of the surge protector will lessen momentary spikes in power, greatly reducing the change the GFI will trip under those conditions, while preserving its function to trip when there is an actual short.

the gfci works by detecting a imbalance in current returning back on the neutral conductor, if there is less power making it back to the neutral then is being delivered by the power/hot side black wire of the gfci then it trips off. if a person starts getting electrocuted the power going thru his body isn't coming back to the neutral/ return side of the gfci causing a life saving tripping off of the gfci. the gfci does not recognize surges(although surges can destroy gfcis) or arch faults or over current conditions like drawing more power than your house panel breaker is rated for. its for personal protection not equipment protection. if salt water drips into a gfci protected outlet and starts sizzling and any power doesnt return back to the neutral it will trip out, otherwise it may not trip out even with sizzle as it doesn't recognize over current conditions

I had a new dedicated circuit installed for my tank that was GFCI (or so I thought). Turns out the current regulations in my area are for all circuits to be AFCI protected. AFCI was tripping constantly due to the heaters flipping on and on. Went away once I went to GFCI. Be careful with this, I verified my vendor did not test their product with AFCI circuits and they are now the standard, and they will nuisance trip.

The power strip daisy-chain is making me nervous, but I understand that sometimes you don't have enough outlets and have to make due with what you have.

If you aren't using a GFCI outlet, how do you protect against electrical surges frying your equipment? If you live somewhere that is prone to lightning storms I could see that happening often. Or am I getting confused on what exactly GFCI outlets protect against?

Very poor advice to not run GFCI outlets. I had my electrician install dual GCFI outlets. For systems that have redundant counterparts (multiple Vortechs for example) each one gets plugged into a different GFCI outlet. Water and electricity also bring the possibility of a house fire beyond the issue of being shocked. It would be better to recommend this approach than no safety at all.
