@@Tensen01 Anytime Ally Beardsley is involved you can bet your bottom dollar they'll need an estranged couple RP. Also, let's not forget Matt's own one-man divorced-couple RP in C3, that was pretty tight too.
At the end of the day, this is a business now. So things that do really well will likely be continued in some form or another. But even as nerdy fans of the game and players, the cast will also probably be just as hooked as we are and will want to explore this stuff further. This particular party of characters may only get four episodes, but there will almost certainly be more off-shoots to explore. Hell, this group may even get a kind of sequel mini-series like Kymal was, depending on how the story plays out in these four episodes.
@@jeremyrosal6049 It's a business, but I think they still will push things that they enjoy. Original Flavor EXU was notoriously divisive and has much lower stream and VOD numbers than either mainline CR campaigns or even other one-shots run by other DMs, but they still continued the Crownkeeper story with EXU Kymal. I know for a fact I'm one of the few people who enjoy that mini-series during live streams, with plenty of people just complaining or hyper-focusing on rules interpretations.
@@romxxii I swear, if they disconnected the thing from D&D completely, and said, "It's a home brew rules set." or something like that, it would make the toxicity so much less prevalent. The "Um, ahkchuleee!!!!" crowd are the worst. They try to suck the joy right out of everything the show does. I get that you're trying to impress other people with your knowledge of the game and its rules, that you want to keep the players and DM honest, and/or at times, try to use the rules to pick apart the story but try to do that without being insufferable. (Not YOU romxxii, just to be clear but YOU the people who do that.) It is ultimately the DM's game, the player's consent for the DM to make the game his, and none of you get a say in how any of it works. You're not there, you don't matter, and you can leave if you're unhappy. Either A) Enjoy things or B) Don't. You can also C) Talk about the things you found fault with, in relation to the show and the game's regular rules, in such a way that doesn't annoy literally everyone, informs those who might honestly want to know so they don't play/DM it wrong, and then still seem like a decent human being. There are other options, obviously, but they end with, "And have everyone roll their eyes at you, then ignore everything else you have to say, and hate you forever..."
@@fictionmyth I think even if they started the show with "Welcome to Critical Role, the show where a bunch of nerdy ass voice actors sit around and play a legally distinct ruleset loosely based on 5E SRD" you'd still get idiots in chat complaining about their misuse of a spell or something.
Aabria is determined to _not_ die to the Calamity, which is why she's playing an Abjuration Wizard with high Con and Eldritch Adept > Armor of Shadows. Free Mage Armor that restores HP every casting, can theoretically just sit in a corner and do nothing but cast Mage Armor until HP is fully restored.
"Are you making you social status me problem, right now?" "We don't have to." Smooth. "You just have to reply to my messages." "The ones from Aria?" "She's my assistant. She happens to be young. She happens to be attractive." You can literally see the sparks here. Like diamond on steel sparks. "You have my literal unadulterated attention right now" "Well, that'll make the first time that's ever happen" And there's the fire.
That is one aspect people forget about with a divorce, it's rarely clean, severing two lives. And while you got divorced for a reason, you were together for a reason too. There's still going to be aspects of that person you liked, memories you shared you're still fond of. Some divorcees even get together occasionally to make love. It doesn't have to mean a complete ending.
What did Lou say in the wrap up episode? Something like "You can't rock up to the table with a bard when you're sharing a table with the bard-est bard to have ever barded"? Lol
@@Danheron2 sure but also Sam said "best behavior" or something like that. It's sad to think they still love eachother but can't be together bc of their life choices
I'm hoping that maybe they did a collaboration thing where, since Starstruck Odyssey just ended on Dimension20 and this ExU: The Calamity is 4 episodes long, they are having a: be on our show for 4 episodes and we'll be on your show for 4 episodes. Love every DM main at both tables styles and have wanted them all to collaborate at the same time for so long. My dream is that the Criticalrole cast gets a short 4 episode season in The Unsleeping City, but thats probably a pipe dream.
I love when the wedding talk happened you can tell (whoever does the lighting) were trying to figure out the tone. 😂 It went from comedic bright to a dull pleasant-melancholy purple so quick, they were really trying to set the mood bless them. 😌🙏
I didn't know I needed Sam and Aabria playing divorcees until like, a week or so ago. But it turns out, I absolutely needed it. I wanna see this 4-episode series animated PURELY TO SEE ALL OF THIS in glorious animated form. I kinda feel like they give off the vibes of very much being still in love with each other, but Laerynn AND Loquatius both know that Laerynn is married to her ambitions (not even her job, her ambitions) first and foremost, and Quay will always come second to them. It's quite sad.
I recall sam saying something along the lines of "well that would be the first time that's ever happened" but I can't really remember the context but I remember it being hilarious
It was a beautiful one-two punch of precision snipes that, sadly, I don't think made it into this video: Laerryn: "You have my ... _unadulterated_ attention right now." Loquacious: "Well that would be the first time that's ever happened."
A beautiful moment, but you cut out probably ny favourite part: "You've got my unADULTERATED attention" "Well that would be the first time that ever happened"
@@Exman33x9001 No, I thought he got plastic surgery and changed his name temporarily~ (I am very aware they changed voice actors after ARR. I mean.. Kind of obvious. xD ) But yeah pleasant surprise on my end.
sam mentions in the wrap-up (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EYK4_eRSSb4.html) that he wanted to be divorced, and Aabria jumped at the oportunity of being the ex-wife
Her talking to him whilst looking up to the sky pleading with the gods to hold her back from snatching him is why black players are so important to DnD. That type of reaction only comes from experience lol and I live for it.
Ahhh yes, because black people are such rage machines? Is that what you're saying? They have to hold in their "physical tendencies" more than any other race? Race has nothing to do with her expressions and I pity you for thinking that way.
@carlycchapman Matt previously and somewhat notoriously in earlier campaign mispronounced quay (word for a dock or small island, pronounced "key") as "qway". (Kind of like the whole sigil/sigul thing way back when). So this character seems very much a reference to that and also very in keeping with Sam's humor.
Maybe its just me but I find it boring and lame. And its fine if its just me. I don't understand how this makes anyone excited for D&D. If it was acting sure, this thing runs like a bad Spanish novella, but if I want to see that (and I do ocassionally) I would just tune in on the tv and would have the full experience. I understand the excitement from the on the spot acting, but where is the adventure/wonder/amusement that is so characteristic of epic fantasy? Ever since the first Season, Critical Role has been a downward spiral for me as an original fan. I saw a youtuber once comment that the whole show is carried by Matt Mercer, but I don't think even Matt can save the cascading tumble down that will eventually end without a fanbase that is Critical Role. I believe the show will reach it's peak sometime this year or next and then begin it's slow descent into oblivion.
There’s a lot more to DND than just epic fantasy and adventure, it’s one aspect sure but it should not be the only focus. Critical role isn’t on a decline, it’s numbers are only growing as it becomes more mainstream (The Legend of Vox Machina), and so your opinion doesn’t reflect the truth of the situation. And are you telling me that you watched the fist episode of EXU calamity and couldn’t find any of the “wonder/amusement” there was in campaign 1?! It’s the first episode for Christ’s sake, I’m not sure why you expected there to be adventure to rival C1. But hey if you have fallen out of love with Critical role that’s fine, but no need to share that negativity with the rest of us who are enjoying critical role as it is :)
Dude, D&D (and really, all TTRPGs) is a *roleplaying game.* Roleplaying is acting. The game is about improv. Sure, you can have fantasy and adventure and kill stuff and loot bodies and level up, but you can do all those things in an RPG video game as well. What makes TTRPGs different is that each player gets to embody their character and *act* on the spot. And that's doubly true when professional actors are playing a game for an audience. If you want a home game that's all about killing stuff, you can play that yourself. When you watch a professional actual play like this or D20 or Battle for Beyond, etc., you should realize it's more like Whose Line Is It Anyway with more drama, the points do matter, and the only game is "Dice or Death".
@@BenSmith-oq8pj This was actually the first time i'd come across the fabled toxic community lol. The main subreddit does a great job of hiding these folks.
Was there not enough wonder & adventure in even just the first 15 to 30 minutes of the episode, where we saw: - A battle of two gods - A boy fishing in a well of endless stars - A griffon with a body made of outer space matter - A flying city where there are fewer ordinary things than there are magical ones - Incredibly complex automatons that are so common in this universe they are used as public transport?
Damn Sam carried that conversation. Aabria probably a great human but when it comes to dnd she’s kinda dead weight. Also the only part everyone laughed that was Brennan’s introduction of Sam which was quite well done.
I agree, but in fairness to Aabria, Sam is incredible at RP and comedy, so much so that he outshines even the regular cast (with the exception of Travis)
My guy you uploaded a monologue of THE JOKER on your channel-- THAT YOU RECORDED YOURSELF. There is literally nothing more cringier on this planet than that wdym
@@Fenristhegreat Did you add "the great" to your username in hopes that one day you might be able to delude yourself into thinking you're great? How's that working out for you so far, do you feel great?
@@TurntReynolds Blimey, nerve touched it would appear... I'm sorry I upset you. I'm sure Aabria deeply appreciates your defence of her roleplaying ability, or lack thereof. I truly hope things pick up for you from here. Best wishes.
