“A Change Is Gonna Come” is one of the most important recordings ever made and done, fortunately, by the late, great Sam Cooke. I remember hearing it for the first time as a 14 year old in 1964 and even at my young age, it made an impression on me. Simply magnificent!

Love both of these songs, and I completely understand not even comparing them by ranking them. "Is there a place for a hopeless sinner..." caught my attention right away when I first discovered 'People Get Ready' due to the lyrics from 'One Love' (Bob Marley)...anyways, really appreciate the way you guys use your "reaction" channel to actually breakdown music and educate people on the deeper aspects of art/culture/politics/relgion/etc..!

Two powerful songs, but sonically "People Get Ready" is just on its own tier for me. As a silly hobby, I maintain a list of my favorite 4000 songs, and that track moves around in the 5-15 range. A true favorite of mine. How about a thematic battle about personal / societal evolution: "Still The Same" (Bob Seger) vs. "Changes" (could do either Tupac or Bowie) vs. "Coming Back" (Southside Johnny)?

Great suggestion and I admire keeping that list. We have talked about compiling our fave songs, seems so daunting!

I am a 56 year old African American. I remember both of these songs like they existed before I was born in 1965. It's not that long ago when segregation was the law of the land. I am still young, but understand history first hand.

You are very correct it wasn't that long ago, although most want and choose to forget that.

I'm a 47 year old Asian guy who grew up with African Americans and i gravitated towards the older generations music. Curtis is above all, my favorite singer. Here's a fact most don't know: Dr. King would use this song and play it to help calm and comfort his followers who were going to make a stand. 🙏

Just read the King biography, so so good. What a man!

I was gonna say that it's impossible to choose between them and then you called it a tie! Good to know I'm not alone. Incidentally, isn't it amazing that these two truly epic songs only come in around 3 minutes? Crazy.

Yes something to be said about so many classics in the 3 minute or under range.

White and black fountains were around in my lifetime. Until they were discontinued when I was a young kid even up in Connecticut. Visits down south to see my grandparents and cousins and Aunts were still under post desegregation. Folks still had serious hate after the Civil Rights Bill of 1964. People In this country still wish black people were slaves or inferior in status due to race. It still, and continues to exist within organized and political violence. In 56 years, no amount of laws, or political status has made a God-damned difference in 50 years.

Wow Rodney I can only imagine how traumatizing all that had to be to live through. Although as you so correctly state nothing much has changed it just became much more hidden until someone starting stoking those fires in his run for the presidency and low and behold he got in. Seems like that racism that so many said didn't exist was alive and well and all you had to do was elect a black president and they came out like little roaches forming their groups. Obviously I am 50 year old white man and can't have any idea of what it is really like to go through what you have and what you do but I can tell you I despise how so many turn a blind eye to it. And how they harken back for the "good ol' days". There has never been a good ol' days in this country!

Shawn and Trey, The facts you research Shawn and you and Trey share are always interesting to hear. You guys are right, this is an iconic song battle. The first song is a classic, and powerful lyrically musically and vocally. This was voted 3rd greatest song ever ? Wow. Both of your comments show the respect you guys have for this song. The second song is is also powerful and has a very nice melody. Powerful lyrics. Excellent insight by both of you in your ommentsGreat way to explain the meaning. This is one of the rare times you both declare this song battle a tie. I can understand your position. Great reaction, great song battle Fran.

Two iconic songs! I saw the Chamber Brothers sing People Get Ready in Boston in the late 60s! A Change Gonna Come is probably more revered today than in 1964! Good job!

Tough to rank. Both are painful songs for me. Tie. Although Sam Cooke was the first, Curtis Mayfield would take that message along further after his death. Both incredible.
