Is it worth it to get a Sam's Club membership for stocking your prepping pantry? Today Annie will take you through some of the price comparisons we did today at Sam's, and share her thoughts on whether the membership is worth it or not. She'll also show you the items we stocked up on on our Sam's Grocery Haul this week. Prices continue to rise, so any time we see a good deal, we try to take advantage and add that product to our stock pile.

I noticed the masa harina on sale next to the flour you were looking at. This is a great item to stock in a pantry. Homemade tortillas and simple to make (just add water) and can act like a bread substitute. And of course many other uses. Highly recommend people to add to pantry stock.

The best way to get a membership to Sam's or Costco is when they have a membership drive. When signing up, they give you free product coupons that are the cost of the membership.

Sam's doesn't have the broad selection, my dad went when he needed paper towels and tp, then rib eyes and lamb chops, then food sampling. Where I live I have Aldis, Stop and Shop, Wal-Mart, BJ's, and closest Big Y and I generally check the special with my list, all driving down a short wooded country lane, no 4 lane highways needed.

I joined the Walmart club a few months ago, and I love it. I can order anything and any amount whenever I want to with no shipping charges or minimum spending, or I can do a pickup with no minimum amount also. I will select the option(if it says they’ll ship that) to have heavier food and other items, like cat litter to have those shipped right to my house. That’s less for me to carry and transport, as I have a fractured disc in my back. It’s $12.99 per month. They do let you choose to pay monthly. It’s less if you pay all at once for the whole year. I save my cardboard too from shipping boxes (cut down) to put my wet, salt bottom boots on by the door. Anyway, our nearest Sams Club is over 100 miles away. So being close to 70 years old and vaccinated, staying home and well during the winter is a priority to me. Love your

I totally agree with you. I am going to let my Costco membership lapse. And once you add the cost of fuel, your membership price,...it's not such a great deal. I think finding more local sources is great. Local farmers, farmers markets, local gardens, or planting a garden. We have 1/4 an acre in No.CO and raise all our eggs, chicken, and 80% of our veggies. I am so glad the trend is moving towards this lifestyle again. I think I may have a great opportunity in the future to help my neighbors develop similar backyard systems.

Ok - here is my experience with this: several years back we decided to do a school/ home economics project: I try to shop from a list because spontaneous purchases usually are the killer for my budget. We also decided to compare shop for the things we normally buy at Walmart, Sams, Target, Aldi, BuyForLess, and Homeland. I had a spread sheet and we wrote down the unit pirces for everything. We were considering the pros and cons of the membership at sams as well. Storage space for the large quantities you buy at sams was also a factor in our evaluations. We went to all the stores on the same day and, as you mentioned, prices today and a few years ago would not compare. Bottom line: the membership cost made the somewhat cheaper prices at Sams a wash. Aldi doesn't have all the brands we like and they do not carry everything all the time, but the prices were much better, over all, and the other name brand things I wanted I can get at Walmart for a good price. (Buy for less is out of business now, at least in our area, but the prices were comparable to Aldi at the time). Target and Homeland had the highest prices. So, although we have a membership at Sam's now as a benefit provided by my husbands job, and we buy once a month there, most of my shopping is at Aldi or Walmart.

I use Sams to fill the gaps when it fits the budget as it’s an hour from us. We are actually an hour from every store which is good and bad. I do have a harvest right freeze dryer and will buy 4 of their rotisserie chickens for $4.98 each and freeze dry them for another shelf stable meat option. I can chicken too but the freeze dried chicken is just another source of meat to give a completely different flavor profile in our stockpile as well as our working pantry. Totally agree with you Annie about buying local when possible and we do buy our beef and pork from a local source once a year.

Zippo (yes the lighter company) sells reusable hand warmers that might be a better option for you since they can be used over and over vs the 1 time use of the Hot Hands warmers. I don’t have a membership to Sam’s or Costco but I have friends that do. They will pick things up for me when I need them. I usually get their tall kitchen garbage bags, the heavy duty paper plates, the foil half steamer pans and the large package of Scotchbrite sponges as well as store brand allergy medication in large quantities. Their meat can be good deals depending on what you are looking for. I usually just shop the local grocery stores sales to fill in the gaps in my pantry because they are cheaper and close by without the membership fees.

I found that local is better. Amish stores are great! I'm very impressed with Azure Standard for their organic bulk staples. Prices are in many cases cheaper than Walmart. 25-50 bags of grains, flour, etc. It is a pickup at site, shipped by trucks. That may be an issue in the coming days or months. I'm not entirely sure how things will pan out there, with convoy protesters.

I agree with you. We have to drive 1.25 hrs away to the nearest Sam's. Then you add in the membership. We just didn't find it a necessity. Aldi, Save a lot, WalMart is so much more economically efficient for us. We have goats, chickens, ducks and rabbit. We processed our pig in 2020 and still have meat left. I buy in bulk only and can as much as I can. We also have 3 freezers for veggies and meat that I can't can. Also harvest sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds and freeze them too. I got off track here. To us, Sam's membership isn't for us.

My old cat loves the hand warmers in her bed. I bought them for the people, but the cat decided she should have them. Lol. I shop at both Sam’s and Costco. The Aldi’s near me does not have a lot of food that I use. Costco has more non GMO and organic items, but tend to be a bit higher priced than Sam’s. I really like a lot of the Costco store brand products, and they are competitively priced. Overall, I like the Costco store brand items more than the Sam’s store brand items. I purchase canned cat food and cat treats at Sam’s because it is much less expensive than other stores. My car runs great on Costco gas. Both Sam’s and Costco are just a few minutes from my house. My boss typically gives me the Costco membership each year for Christmas, so that is a huge savings. I buy my eyeglasses and contact lenses at Costco. I also buy a few items at Restaurant Depot using a family member’s membership, but many of their items are more expensive than Sam’s and Costco. I like the chicken leg quarters at Restaurant Depot (generally 50 to 60 cents per pound, but you have to buy 40 pounds). I also buy chicken breasts at Restaurant Depot if they have the 10 pound bags. I live in the suburbs, so I do not have the option to produce my own meat. I did just find a local farm that will deliver eggs. Exciting because I am trying to find local suppliers for key fresh items. I have two raised bed boxes that I will use to plant a kitchen garden in in a couple of months, and I have pots for herbs. It is a start. Thanks for sharing. Stay warm.

If you want more natural and organic options, Costco is a better option for you. I'm not sure if you have one nearby, if you mentioned it I missed it. The items at Sam's that have the best savings seem to be butter, maple syrup, pancake mix, tomato products, bacon, flour, sugar, yeast, and frozen fish. I prefer Costco for the quality but it's considerably out of my way, so if I have other errands to run that I can do near the Costco, then I try to do it all in that area.

We are 45 mins to both Sam's and Costco. I schedule my stock up shopping trips around errand days (dr. and dental appointments, car services, date nights, kids activities, etc). I also watch for sales. Those things that are only a few cents cheaper go on sale for $2-$4 off. Then it's really worth it.. Same thing with the junk food/snacks. We pick up our favorites when they're on sale, then it's a treat. As far as selection goes Costco has better organic and natural options. However, you can find more variety online at Sam's than what you see in thw store. The unbleached flour I get online at Sam's. You can get free shipping from both Sam's and Costco for shelf stable items. Meaning you can stock up on those items without the trip to the store. As a member you also get the cheaper gas price, which for us is typically 10 cents cheaper per gallon. Over a year thay adds up quickly. Lastly, with the memberships: we paid for our first year of membership. After that, the rebate check we receive at the end of the year pays for us to renew our membership for the following year. We specifically got the more expensive membership for this reason. So with the membership being free, and shopping the sales it saves us a couple hundred dollars over the full year. Which in my math is what feeds our home grown meat or pays for us to purchase our local meat. 👌🏼

Our closest Sam's and Costco is about 100 miles south of us. But we got about every 6 weeks or so if we need some things. It's a day out for my husband and I. WI go to either of them though, I always compare the prices and try to judge whether buying certain items in bulk will be used before they go bad. There are only two of us now in our household but we try to stock up for helping family members as well. Between Sam's and Costco, there were definitely things cheaper at Sam's. Well you asked...lol. We do not have a Sam's but we have costco about an hour away. I have never seen the benefit of the store...bulk is supposed to be cheaper but the way they do it it is just a ruse from what I see. I am a local store/farmer shopper as I believe in supporting the local store and keeping my money in the hands of the local people and shop owners. I don't even mind paying a bit more to do that. However, I refuse to drive across town to save 5 -10 cents as it is not worth it by time you factor in gas and time....I pick a store (2 grocery I use) and buy what I need. I am not shopping for a family of 8 though! Although we have a Walmart, I have not shopped there in over 2 years (and will not) as they have been the ruination of the small hardware store and grocery store, plus zero money comes back to the community from them. Not to mention alot of the product is junk...its cheap sure, but it does not last. I just googled - I did not know that Walmart owns Sam's club...interesting on the pricing you found with that in mind.

So I am a big lover of Sams and figured I would give you my take: I get their $100 plus membership. This means that a lot of non perishables can be shipped to me for free. I live an hour from Sams, an hour from Aldi, an hour from Walmart and 1/2 an hour from a traditional grocery store chain which has a smaller than average store in a small town. Because a lot of items can be shipped to me, it can be a huge savings versus driving to the store. I also like Sams produce and routinely find that the produce is better quality and price than Aldi. My favorite 1-2 punch for groceries is Aldi and Sams together but it is rare that I get to do that. I don’t truly know if it is better to spend the $100 but have long decided that the shipping alone takes care of a lot of that overhead. It’s amazing how different people have different experiences!

One thing to consider when comparing prices between Walmart and Sam's Club, is that Sam's is owned by Walmart so their prices will be somewhat comparable. Love your channel! Blessings!💕

I let go of my Sam's membership years ago. I found 2 discount stores and buy baking products. I purchase loss leaders, groc store front page sale items promoted to get you into store, like butter for 1.77 a lb and put in freezer, just got a case of apples this week for 77 cents a lb. I run in weekly for sale things and always check out clearance areas. First of the month I do 1 big haul and get items on mega sale + senior 10% discount..

I have a military sams membership that we split with my in laws. We have to drive over an hour to get to it and honestly, we don’t shop there besides to get a few items we can’t get at our local shops and like you said the prices barely are worth the small change saved. We still keep it for convenience to go when we can but otherwise isn’t a necessary amenity for our family.

Our membership store is called BJs it's similar to Costco and sam's. It's about a 25 min drive but its near our church, so we are over that way every sunday. So sometimes after church I'll run in and get the few things I want from there. A reason I keep our membership is because of the clothing prices and selection. It may sound strange but many of our clothing options are becoming limited. For whatever reason I have good luck in their clothing department for our whole family. I also like their book selection and toys selection come Christmas time. Another reason is their rotisserie chicken. It's huge and only $5, probably not organic but it's so yummy and an easy meal option. Their bakery department is also nice when you are having a party. So it may not be for stocking up or normal grocery items but I do enjoy having our membership and definitely go in with a list.

If you do get the Sams membership for $100 you can get free delivery on a lot of items. Plus you earn rewards especially if you pay off what you spend each month before your payment is due. Also I really like Sams Flour. I always use to use Gold Metal but after trying Sams, I prefer it over Gold Metal now. I love how, bread, cookies, pizza dough, pie crust turns out. I've used Aldis flour before but have noticed that whatever I make with it just doesn't taste as good. I understand that you prefer the unbleached. You'll have to let us know how you like it after you try it.

I guess it depends where you live. Here in Hawaii, food is so expensive at our local food stores. With a business membership at Sams, $100 a year, I buy enough that I get cash back and my membership is free. However their produce sucks. Many things are rotten. I buy meats, canned foods, shampoo, laundry soap etc. But I do both Walmart and Sams. Good video!

I happened to catch when Sam's was doing a promotion where if you purchased a $45 membership you got a $45 gift card to Sam's. So essentially a free membership. I work about 5-10 minutes away from our Sam's so I go there on my lunch break usually. It has saved us a pretty good amount of money.

We have Costco and Sam's nearby. Also Walmart and many grocery stores. Winco has great prices, excellent produce. We go to Costco for the excellent Prime beef, lamb, and steelhead trout. My sister loves Costco for the gas prices. We don't use Sams. The nearby Walmart is kinda run-down compared to other places. It actually looks worse after they renovated it a few years ago.

I find my Costco card is worth it for the gas prices (they're always at least $0.25 less/gallon than anywhere else near me), cat litter, coffee and espresso beans, and household items like toilet paper, detergent, dish soap, etc. I prefer to buy most of our food elsewhere since I can get better deals there for those items.

Well I bought a membership when they had a promo for new members and paid $45. A little later got that $45 back on a gift card so it paid for the membership and was used to go towards my ONE time ONLY trip there. I didn't like the layout of the store, no one to help find what I needed or boxes to put my groceries in at the checkout. Just as you did, I got very little for the huge amount of my total bill. Even though I used EBT I feel it's just not worth the travel time or gas to get there and they're about 40 miles away from me. I never saw the produce section since it was blocked off so the forklift drivers could speed around back and forth with nothing loaded, it's like they were just killing time and had their own little race track back there. Bottom line is if I have to spend money to save money, then it's NOT saving any money at all even with the refund for the membership I paid for. If ya gotta pay to save then ya not saving Jack Diddly! They don't even ask if ya need any help loading ya car/truck, if my grandson hadn't been with me, I would've been struggling hard to get everything loaded into my car ALONE and I have COPD. That was the worst shopping trip I've been on in my 60 years of living. The cashier told me "You go over there on that side and we unload it from this side." Well the way I had it loaded was totally opposite of the way they threw it all back into the buggy after ringing it all up. No 'thank you' or 'have a great evening' or 'come back to see us' ever came out of their mouth. To me it's nothing but a ripoff, I'm not worried about auto renew cuz I unchecked that box while I was on my PC! Kudos to those that like it and save, but I didn't save anything but did waste a trip. Won't be back there anymore, I have Kroger, Walmart, Ramey's, Vowell's and other small town stores that don't charge to save money. 😤🤬

I have been shopping for my family at Sams for 11 years. You have to get the super savings card it is $100.00 what I do is wait until the items my family needs go on sale $2.00-6.00 off tissue, garbage bags, detergent etc. I then buy the max of what is allowed. This is how I save also if you spend $500.00 over several months you get 10% cash back which you can take as cash or use on your next shopping trip. My husbands gets his meds discounted as well as gas. Tons of savings at Sam’s Club.

I think the reason for feeling like the quantity of your purchase is not comparable to dollars spent is the prices have went up significantly. I know I've noticed that here in Indiana. I only like shopping there for certain things in bulk are a tad cheaper. But finding buys anywhere right now is a challenge.

Hi Annie, in Australia, Costco is a bit of a novelty I think. My son pays my membership for my birthday, and I enjoy going every other month . I get their specials and often see things that just aren't stocked at other stores here. On a weekly basis I shop Aldi/Woolworths. I shop the sales and stock up that way, then meal plan from what I have. Which is quite extensive as I've been stockpiling for sometime and use it as a working pantry. I rarely pay full price for anything as I make sure I have enough quantity until the next sale of a product. Prices are definitely rising here as well.😏

Hi Annie!! I just subscribed! Your channel is great! I just discovered it. I buy 95% of my groceries from Aldi, truth be told. The prices are just unbeatable, even for organic. I went to Costco a few weeks ago.......costco is worth it to me for a handful of non-food items annually, and then as far as food/household supplies, I just buy something IF it's on special (like 'on sale' for $4-$6 off per item). Once the sale price is factored, then it "makes sense" -- so basically, I go in to look at their "loss leader" products.

Oh, AND I don't take a 'separate trip' to Costco, because I won't rationalize the cost of fuel/time. So I stop in only if I happen to be near a location. :-)

I went ahead and got a SAMs. We dont have an ALDI’s, Sprouts, WholeFoods, Winco or any other stores in our area. Have Big Wally’s, Neigjborhood Wally’s, and Target. Plus a couple of small local stores. SAM’s is 10 minutes away. I get good buys on kitchen / baking items, SOMETIME meats, brand name canned veggies. I found FISH prices were good. Specifically the COD and Salmon. I like their large size spices. I DO find the convenience of larger / multi item bulk packaging for SOME items. I also think for the most part the prices are comparable when broken all the way down. I spent 250.00 at our local CASH SAVER market yesterday.. lol…money gets spread around 🤣

I haven't been to Sam's in years, but I love Costco. I split a membership with my mom, and did the math before we purchased. Combined we usually spend less than $250/month there so the basic membership is better for us, and splitting the $60 membership equally means we each only have to save $2.50/mo for it to pay for itself. Gas at Costco here runs 25-50 cents cheaper, so filling up just once a month more than covers that. I focus on things on sale and when they go on sale the savings can be huge at Costco.

I work in a local grocery store also, it's just my husband and I, we buy sale prices for meat. This week its on sale, 10lbs for roughly $23 so I will buy 20lbs and I have a meal saver (best appliance ever) and it will last 6+ months. For 2 of use I do think Costco and sam's are not worth it either. I am amazed at how people don't stock when items are on sale, I see (the same) people at the store daily. Buy a freezer and stock up before you know it you will have enough meat to last you 3-6 months.

I always let my membership end and then after about 2-3 months they send me a huge discount and a extra free membership which I give my son. And they have coupons every month also. They also do specials on gas. Their are a few things that are a couple dollars cheaper. So I combine my errands for when I need to go there because we live in rural mountains of PA and have to drive to NY unless we want a longer drive to stay in PA.
