I've been so inspired by you guys that I actually walked down to the local yard and joined a big wooden boat project (called Emelia) as a volunteer. During the days I work in IT so when asked what brought me there of course I mentioned Tally ho. The response from them was: "Oh you mean Leo? Yeah, we've been watching him too. Quite a perfectionist".

As a youngster living in a pulp and paper mill town, I was often told that the odor was "The smell of money." It wasn't until years later that I realized that it was actually "The smell of someone else's Money."

I'm not much over half through the video but had to post a comment. We've been visiting Port Townsend regularly for 40 years, got a second home here 25 years ago, and been permanent for the last six. I don't have a boat, don't know all that much about them, but never miss a chance to drive through the yard and look at them! And once in a while, the door is up and I get to see Tally Ho!

_(Calls large hardwood warehouse)_ "Hi there, it's Leo. How's it goin'? Yeah, pretty good, man, yeah." First name basis, one of the regulars. This may be one of my favorite parts of your documentarian skills, mate. These little 'day in the life of' glimpses that hint eloquently at the broader story of living there, mixed in amongst the directly instructional parts about restoring _Tally Ho._ You're really an artist, aren't you, and not just with wood or boat building.

Pretty cool to have a major supplier of hardwood in my town! Not that I need them, but they add to the place. I took pretty much the drive out there (mill smell and all, but don't knock it because they are a major contributor to the local economy) so I could donate blood at the nearby Elks Club.

The amazing thing about your videos, Leo, are the "mood" and "scene" shots. From the first video to this, you show an amazing ability to tell the story, and to show the work, while intermixing shots of Pancho, the sky, the mountains, the coast, etc. Even the early ones of flying to England, had a wonderful mix of driving, flight, etc. You have an absolutely extraordinary ability as a film editor, a craft for which there is an Academy Award, because it is so hard to do it.

The video showed the paper mill. Funny in the 1940-50s my mother was an auditor for Crown Zellerback paper and traveled to Pt. Townsend from San Francisco annually to audit the mill. She said that it took 3 or 4 days each way to get there. Train to Portland, then another train to Seattle then a boat to Pt. Townsend. My daughter and I visited in the lat 1990s and found nice folks that had records with moms initials on them. Always loved that part of the world and understand why it is so special.

The original design is pretty well thought-through. Probably the biggest thing like that would be the framing - it would have been a quicker and easier to do less sawn frames and install intermediate steamed frames in between, but the boat was designed and originally built to be really strong and I felt that I should stick to that! There are other changes that I have made though.

I was particularly satisfied with the tip for making a true countersink despite the surface angle by using the bit on the end of the shaft in reverse. It is assuring to see you are taking the trouble to re-build to this standard. Once, on a boat, we arrived at the bar of a river taking an old sloop for winter lift out, we arrived too early, due to freshening wind, started to touch, decided to anchor awaiting the flood to get going, eventually when ready to resume the passage the sampson post broke at deck level, resulting in the fairlead and forestay getting carried away, so now always want a bigger and stronger post!!

When on your own,Its best to walk around and tailout on rip saw safest way I find with heavy beams. Poor bird no protection for ears lol. Love all your work going into this boat building and your video,editing very talented in every thing you do. As a cabinetmaker for 43 years enjoy seeing all construction and hand joints used.

After seeing the picture of bits on another boat, I was surprised to see that yours are off center. I was expecting the bowsprit on the centerline running between them. I’m looking forward to seeing how this part works out. Keep up the great work Leo! Your videos are always a treat!

We do so love your boat building classes Leo. Every time I do, I say to myself, "This guy is building a boat that will last for TWO hundred years." From seeing you cut that piece of purple heart for the new keel to casting the bronze floors to these Sampson posts, everything you've done is first class, top notch, highest quality materials put together with equally masterful workmanship. Oh, and saving that part of the stern showed good character because you realized it was probably going to wind up not deserving the title of a rebuilt boat but instead was turning into a copy of the original. (A copy made with much better materials. BTW.) I worked my entire career as an automobile technician and have been told I was one of the best in the nation by a man who would know and I think it's because I took the kind of pride in my workmanship that it's obvious to me you do. So glad to see somebody else in the world like me.

Staying humble?
@ladamyre1
@ladamyre1 2 года назад
@@paulnovak833 True humility is knowing exactly what you are and not looking down on your fellow man because he's not. Hiding your expertise has more to do with a lack thereof and trying to make people think you're more than you are by calling yourself "humble". Virtue signalling and all that, it's all pure hypocrisy. Those claiming to be tolerant, I find them to be the most intolerant of all. Like the man in the middle of the synagogue loudly proclaiming himself to be the biggest sinner and begging for all to hear for mercy from God. What a pretender! No wonder he hates everybody. So I talk about pride in workmanship and complement Leo for showing it to us all and you see something else? I wonder who you're trying to impress. I suspect it may be you, and that's about as self-absorbed as it gets.

@@ladamyre1 I think in general it's a falsehood that there are only a handful of "craftsman" left in the world. In all trades throughout the world men and women strive to do their best with what they have. So if it makes you feel better to think you are some unicorn than knock yourself out

Oops, referring to a place in the US as home. You reminded me of the first time we new soldiers said home and we meant the barracks. I saw the same momentary look of horror on hearing that word. We enjoyed that salsa beat!

I grew up next to the largest pulp and paper mill in the world (at one time) and what you smelling is the kraft mill. We used to call it "the smell of money" used to employ 3000+ staff 24/7 and after 110 years is finally closing. That kraft smell immediately makes me think of home.

I love seeing fine word-working AND boat-building, so this episode is a double bonus. Great to see Leo get into the details; it must be hard to be managing everything while others get to do the detail work. Leo does both to perfection.

I look forward to your videos Leo. Being absolutely rubbish at any type of woodwork I love to watch the accuracy of real time carpentry. On this occasion I did not listen with headphones and your comment about the paper mill gave my wife who happened to be in the room, a chuckle. It's good to see the around the yard and your journeys to collect timber or anything else. If this was an Amazon review I'd give you 5 stars.
