Me too, he could call himself anything and it wouldn't matter because his videos are always exercellent. He is the best tech youtuber out there. His editing and voice are mesmerising, so much so that he could do the voice over on the films at a cinema.Another great video.
I think this goes without saying but one of the reasons I enjoy this channel's coverage of foldables is because they come from someone who genuinely immerses themselves into the technology and daily drives it. You know more than anyone else how this category has evolved and what needs to still be improved upon. So many other reviewers have become used to the idea of cashing in a review for a foldable only to run back to their iPhone or Pixel of choice, so seeing someone truly knowledgeable in what they're reviewing is such a delight
I find Samsung's flip boring compared to the competitors like Motorola and Xiaomi, but as you said, it's the most matured tiny foldable in the market and I definitely can't deny that.
The Samsung Z Flip 6 looks cool especially the crafted black, but $1099 is a lot of money. So I decided that I will get a Motorola Razr- 2024, because $699 seems like a good price still expensive but Z Flip 6 for $400 more doesn’t seem worth it imo. edit: I just got the Motorola Razr- 2024, and so far it is awesome, and I like it alot totally worth $699!
Grabbed the Flip6 as my first foldable, and so far, I am absolutely loving it. Feels like I am finally prioritizing a fun phone instead of the most feature full phone.
If you're considering purchasing a Samsung Galaxy Flip or Fold phone, I strongly suggest you think twice. As a loyal Samsung user, I bought a Galaxy Flip 5 less than a year ago, and it already has two pink lines and a black dot on the screen. After a lot of back-and-forth with customer service, they finally asked me to reset the phone yesterday, Friday, August 9, 2024. Today, I went to the Samsung store at Westfield Stratford, where I was informed that I would need to pay £340 to repair it because of a small dent, which apparently voids my two-year warranty. Given my long relationship with Samsung, I can no longer recommend their Flip or Fold phones. I've been a Samsung user since 2013, starting with the Galaxy Note 3. I still own a Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy Note 9, and a Galaxy S24 Plus, along with a Galaxy Watch 4 Classic and Galaxy Buds Live. I had been considering upgrading to the Galaxy Fold 6, but this experience has completely turned me off Samsung. Even though I’ve been satisfied with their products in the past, I now find their two-year warranty untrustworthy. Goodbye, Samsung. I have photos of the damage that voided my warranty.
My first flip phone, and I love it. I swapped off Samsung to Sony for a while, and while spec-wise it's similarily top-of-the-line, the user experience is just more refined on a Samsung phone. Coupled with trade-in deals, it's hard to justify buying a new phone from any brand that isn't from Samsung or Apple, especially if you change you phones every 2 to 3 years. With a spigen tough armor pro case, I haven't been babying it either, and the folding screen feels solid enough for me to use with confidence that I (or anyone I lend my phone to) won't accidentally damage it.
They've improved. But you really have to want one of these to mitigate the compromises compared to traditional slab phones. Slabs are still the best bang for your bucks.
Honestly as much as I do miss some key things from my slab Pixel 7 Pro, I'm just so sick of big heavy phones. I've gotten so sick of that form factor that I've decided I'm willing to give up those important things, just to have a small and light phone. I traded in for the zflip6, and like it quite a bit so far. The feeling of just a small square in your pocket and in your hand is amazing. I'm in Canada and I would have got the Asus Zenphone 10, but apparently phone calls drop a lot and connectivity is not great in Canada. So I basically had no other choice for a small Android phone lol.
The S23 is a small phone by modern standards. Noticeably smaller the pixel 6a too. Same size screen though. I tried the ultra 40 but the build quality in the hinge put me right off. @@Helixium08
I have a Flip 5 I bought at launch so now it's 1 year old. It has survived a few drops onto concrete (in a full case) foldables are plenty durable, except maybe sand, and despite it not having the best cameras it takes really good photos. I'm just not a huge fan of Goodlock, but the small display is good for timers, streaming audio, weather, step counts, that sort of thing.
@@collin.a. it's slightly peeling from a drop when it was unfolded (fell like any other phone) Otherwise no. I think since when it goes in a purse or pocket it's folded helps keep the inner screen protected.
@collin.a. The screen protector is a 10 quid sticker- I don't get why people are so focused on it... all my previous non folding phones needed a new screen protector at least 1-3 times a year too!
@@txteva that's not so much my concern, it's more that, once it bubbles, you apparently aren't supposed to fold it, or you risk damaging the display. and samsung says you shouldn't take it off or replace it by yourself, but instead go to a Samsung repair location to have it done. otherwise you void warranty I believe. it just seems like it has a lot of potential to damage the screen if you don't closely monitor the bubble-presence, and if you aren't always able to immediately go get it installed at a repair center. Just seems like more anxiety and hassle for me, lol.
@collin.a. I've replaced about 5 of the protector screens (my Mum also has had a Flip3 since 2021, along with myself) and it's no more difficult than a standard screen protector other than remembering to keep it open for the first overnight to let the screen stick properly. I'd agree if the protector is creased then could pick up dirt etc and that's what causes the damage. If it bubbles then replace it but any phone would be the same. It's best changed at Samsung of course but since there aren't many stores and they were charging a lot for it (free in the US, not in the UK - well some people got one for free or it was £30) then DIY was the best option.
@@shepardbrostv To be fair, it's pretty manly to rock a super girly phone case and not give a hell what anyone else thinks because you are just THAT secure in your masculinity that it doesn't even put a dent in it.
You’re 100% on the mature part. I’ve had a ton of small annoying issues with my Razr+ cover display that were all related to Motorola’s unrefined software.
@@ashermathew8178 the FLIP 6, yes. Overall it’s a more refined experience. I personally prioritize being up to date with Android releases and the RAZR doesn’t really do that.
@@Unan1mouz mainly just apps either slowing to a crawl or being poorly formatted due to the aspect ratio. The vertical screen mode is quite nice though.
Your phone reviews are the most fun to watch by far. No competition there. Good work, keep it up! On the phone: I want to get myself one of these eventually, ideally the next generation. I really hope they do make the outer screen more capable by that point. I am not a power user and not a techtuber either, but I still want that feature badly :)
Most of the pain of moving subjects in samsung cameras has been solved for me by using the motion photo setting in camera app on my 23 ultra. It might be jarring when looking at the image at first as it will be a short video, but the final frame is the post processed image which will be the one shared if you chose to share the file. Most of the times it has also tweaked with the exposure and other settings slightly in the way which I preffered.
6 generations in and foldables still haven't broken through the 2% of total smartphones barrier, and with these iterative little 'upgrades' I can't see that changing any time soon.
Its only youtubers and influencers hyping it up. Everyone I know (granted only 3 people) who bought a foldable has had theirs break in under a year - always some kind of screen issue. They haven't solved the durability issue yet.
@@JimIBobIJones exactly, they always gloss over that, the idea that they're now giving 7 years of updates on them is ridiculous, as if the screen will last half that time 😂
Watching this on my flip 6 cover screen, upgraded from flip 3 after it got "banana shaped" from a fall. Fun fact- apps from the cover screen continue when you open the phone.
Today is day 2 with the Flip 6. Not my first foldable but my first flip style. I originally wanted the Razr but got a Flip for almost half the RRP without trading in anything so thought I'd give it a try. It's far from a perfect device. I haven't used a single AI feature. It is not the phone for everyone but so far it's being a good phone for me. I go for walks wherever I can and like watching or just listening to videos, folded this device is so comfy in one hand for this.
I finally caved in to buying an iphone last year, and Im realizing that your incredible demo shots are 10% a testament to the phone and 90% a testament to your photography! your vids are always eye candy!
I remember when I bought an OG Razr unlocked online back in the day thinking that the $300 was expensive.... Also, I've been kinda flip flopping on the Flip6, Razr+ 2024 or holding on for a good deal on either this year's Pixel Fold or OnePlus Open (I dig the idea of being able to carry a tablet in my pocket, so it can actually be used as an e-reader for books and comics - just the prices are wild, especially the Fold6)
I've had a Flip3 5G since it's release and I've always loved it! Upgrade to the Flip6 this year because they had finally updated the cameras and I couldn't be happier!
Having watched a lot of MrFoldable over the years, it just hit me how much better Michael's gotten at still photography. Obviously you're going to get better at it when part of your decade long career is testing cameras, but the extra effort of framing beautiful shots for the comparisons is greatly appreciated
I love my Z Fold 6, but I miss my ability to take low light shots of moving subjects (pets, people, etc.) that I had with my Pixel 8 Pro and iPhone Pro Max. Other than that, it's been great so far!
I always thought these had gimped specs, but after getting my hands on a flip 3, in impressed they crammed a SD 8 in it. Terrible thermal dissipation but it's great to have in such a compact form.
Hi Michael. I was one of your first 50 subscribers when you started the channel and just realised youre now at 1.25 million 😮 Congrats buddy heres to the next million 🎉
I upgraded from the Flip 5 to the Flip 6. The improvements, though subtle, are major, and you are correct that it is now essentially a S24 that flips. All Samsung has to do is make the apps native to the cover screen without using Good Lock.
One important note: I have never accidently dented my Fold 4's inner screen with a finger nail. On my Z Flip6, this happened within a *week.* It doesn't seem very durable in that aspect
Agreed , I had a flip 3 , hinge broke twice in 4 months, and now my colleague has flip 6 , hinge broke in week 1. We both are active people with dogs but we are now using normal shaped phones and are not going back
I still own and use the flip 5G (from 2020) and I'm still amazed by it, people are still talking about it and want to see and use it. I also have the fold, and by day to day use the flip just wins by a mile. I was so hoping they would solve the 'take photo of moving object' feature.
I don't understand why they don't include faster charging. The phone has two separate batteries by default, to fit its architecture. If each battery charged at 30 Watts, you'd have 60 Watts fast charge. Good for its battery life and your time economy.
Great review as always. Might be a boring update to the Flip line but it's still the closest I've been to pulling the trigger and picking one up! Fun fact: the MSC Meraviglia, by your camera sample, seems to be registered in Valletta which is in Malta, the tiny country I live in 😂
Thanks for pointing out that sadly shutter lag/motion blur still plagues Samsung devices, after all those years. I mean, I appreciate xyz zoom range, megapixels and AI thingies, but blurry unusable picture of anything with even slight movement (no, Camera assistant does not help, no, one should not use Pro mode for this) should not be acceptable in 2024.
@@derekisthematrix literally everyone else solved shutter lag problem. Using S23U last year, my prehistoric Iphone 6 and friends Pixel 4a had better results when it comes to moving subjects. I have no excuses for Samsung, it has been like that for years on their devices and most of the "honest" reviewers don't even mention it. But I know a lot of people who gave up on Samsung just because of terrible camera.
Thanks for the coverage Michael, keep it up. I'll be interested to see how the screen and screen protector hold up on this one. Have you needed to replace your Flip 5 screen protector yet? I am a bit flip-curious, but I worry about the screen protector. I have heard that once it starts to bubble, you shouldn't close the phone before replacing that bubbled-protector because you may damage the screen. That concerns me a bit, as does Samsung advising against removing the protector yourself (I believe that's still the case at least).
For me the discussion starts and stops with Battery life. I’ve had 2 flips now. 3 and 5. Both started showing signs of significant battery degradation at 6 months and then became not reasonably usable at around the 1 year mark. For people who can only upgrade or get a new phone once every few years this is just unacceptable. I know you reported good results here but we’re in an age where day 1 battery results/testing are largely meaningless. They are all mostly fine out of the box.
I was going for the safe choice of a pixel 9 but inevitably I'm thinking splashing a bit higher for a flip, now to choose a Motorola or Samsung. Your videos are great but they dont half make me think hard
I just got a Nothing Watch Pro 2, and I think you would find it interesting. Its RTOS is limited for sure compared to Android Wear or even Samsung's old Tizen-based OS, but the insane battery life enables a whole other workflow. I never have to think about charging it, and together with its IP68 rating, I basically never take it off -- it's just always there. Honestly, it feels more like a modern take on those old Casio watches than whatever the "smart watch" competition has been cooking up. Its compromises might not be your style, but I think you can appreciate what it has going for it.
What I learned after years of Galaxy Flips is that a potential buyer of a Flip should not consider it as a two-displayed phone, like a Fold or a bit more similar-looking option that is Moto's Razr, and should consider it as a smartphone that happen to has a buffed Galaxy Watch on the outside. Personally, I'm a full time (dumb) watch user. I can't go anywhere without one and I dislike the existence of a smart watch on my wrist, even though I like the convenience of it secretly. So, a phone that happened to has an oversized and overpowered smart watch on its cover should be just the thing I'm looking for. Therefore, I believe that it is time for me to trade-in my iPhone for a Flip that actually has a main camera which can hold up to a certain standard along with a (finally) respectable camera and a built-in smart watch. As always, a great review, Mr Flip. I always love watching your content and the honesty you provide within your content, which is actually succesfully will be leading me to buy something that folds this year. Peace (❁´◡`❁)
I got this phone and it's the first flip I have but I definitely feel a little jealous of the Razr 50 Ultra, it's beautiful in person and my worry that it was too big in videos basically disappeared once I held it. I do like the build quality of this Flip 6 however and the crafted black back feels great. I hope Samsung finally makes the cover screen bigger in the next Flip and hopefully OneUI 7 will solve much of the software stuff.
I just want a big slab phone that can fit in any pocket (comfortably). With good build quality and consistent software updates for a long time. Flip 6 appears to satisfy those criteria.
I am definitely an iPhone guy. Up until recently my daily driver was an iPhone 15 Pro. I do see the benefits of a quality android device. My current daily driver is the Galaxy Z Flip 6. I have to say the pocket size form factor is phenomenal. This year Samsung has gotten a lot right with this upgrade for the Flip 6. The 12 GB of ram and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 are nice improvements. This year's phones feel sturdy and premium build. To be honest, many of the AI features seem like a party trick that will not get a lot of use. The battery life seems to be an improvement over last year. I returned the Flip 4 and 5 because of the subpar battery. So far so good with battery life with my Flip 6 😊.
Took one look at the new flip and after seeing the camera changes of the Razr Plus of this year, I opted to take advantage of the large discount of the 2023 Razr+ instead 😅
The reason I didn't stick with moto flip this year is the hinge is still just bad. I can deal with the cover screen issues. I just want the phone to stay open at whatever angle I leave it at
I don't know if my ears were playing tricks or there was a random f bomb, but I found it hilarious and authentically real. Either way, thanks for some of the best and most comprehensive video reviews on RU-vid.
Woo! Mandatory "Queen Mary 2 appearance" celebration comment :D Cool review as always, I really wish I could afford and more importantly justify a Flip 6, but I don't have the kind of "I'll buy it because it's cool" money for a phone 😅
I'm so glad I remembered that Motorola revived its Razr... I started researching both, and saw your review on the 2024s as well. Waiting for my purchase to arrive but this review cements my feeling of having made the right choice despite the weaker camera and chips
Watching Mr M after a long time and happy to see that he’s still just as fun as he used to be! Sadly though, the Flip is still a no for me. But glad that the category (foldables) continues to grow.
Got my Flip6 today. In comparison to the Razr+ 2024, it's definitely more limiting with the cover screen but feels more mature as a flagship device. Build and hinge quality is impressive too.
I agree. The Samsung Z flip 6 is a matured version. I enjoy using the cover screen. It really works for NFC payments and checking mail, etc. Responding, to mail, messages, not as easy. RU-vid is pretty bad on the cover screen. The fact that you can't get Google Assistant (voice command) to work on the cover screen is a big issue. For 100% of all other phones (except z flip...) you can use voice command anytime. The fact that it will not work on the cover is a missed opportunity. IT seems that it could probably be easily fixed....but I'm not holding my breath. I feel much better now that I said this...thank you. By the way, I have been watching your videos since Pocketnow...thank you for producing quality work that helps me make informed choices.
This would be my first flip/foldable phone. I definitely was able to get a $1050 trade-in to offset the cost. It definitely isn't an ambitious phone like Motorola 2024 flip, but I think by constantly following Mr. Mobile on his love for Foldable devices, I can see that there have been a lot of improvements along the way to this 6th generation that is now breaking into the "mainstream" market. And that down the road, Samsung would have better software support for this device Vs Motorola. If I wasn't in the US market, I would probably have more choices... But sadly, I do not. I had always been on the fence with the flip, loved the concept of a smaller phone in my female clothing pockets. But I was always on the fence about it because the technology wasn't completely there yet for me to jump in 2020. But now, I think Samsung has gotten a lot of feedback from the flip, that it is a solid & refined product now.
Ill shine a light on the cover screen, it's because Samsung is working with Google and until Android 15 cover screens are severely limited, Android 15 adds in official cover screen support and will allow apps and stuff to run on it outside of an unofficial capacity. Alongside treating the external display much more like a secondary real screen. Part of the contract. You want circle to search and quick security patches etc, you gotta work with google!
