Hey FOMO are you gonna update to firmware 1113? I heard they changed the tone mapping clipping points on 1113. On 1100 ps5 clipped at 17 clicks and now it clips at 20 on 1113. Please test before and after fw update with game HDR on/tone mapping static (hgig) and also test FMM mode with both static and active and see if there are any newfound anomalies.
I often find that I prefer HDR over Dolby Vision, DV is often washed out or to dim and look a bit boring. I noticed that on games too. I know what it's "supposed" to be like that but a good example of this is Microsoft Flight Simulator. In Dolby Vision it make the cloud detail stronger and messes up the look of the aircraft a lot & it just looks a bit weird to me. Where as the more even brightness looks better to me as it gives more of an impression that the plane and the sky are the same illuminator. Or to put it another way Dolby Vision makes things look like poorly composited Visual effects. So I prefer HDR10 etc. and the flowers shown in this video are a good example it completely dims the red to try to make the yellow stronger and instead of your eye flowing to the yellow which is the intent, it makes you wonder what happened to the picture all of a sudden or if your TV is broken. So yeah I'm not really a fan of Dolby Vison's current implementation. I'm not saying everything should look like Samsung Vivid mode either I just find my personal taste is closer to HDR10
As many times as I've seen the red/yellow tulip vid - and I know the intent of the test is to measure the 'pop' of yellow against the sea of red - I'm always distracted by this. The reds in the two images are so drastically different, it's all I can focus on, and the reviewers never factor that in. It's jarring.
s95c for me 👌 If not for Samsung and its QD Oled tech there wouldnt be a A95K or L also might not have been G3 with MLA tech. Samsung raised the bar ..competition is king ! Thanks Samsung !
When lg first make OLED affordable & amazing - I didn't see you say "Thanks LG for innovating". Typical Samsung fan. Now I want LG Display to come back with a better technology to kick Samsung butt & make you say "LG Display, you changed the game".
@@Sonola777 It’s possible but from what I’ve read the early impressions on the G3 are that it still suffers pink tint in full screen white and bad dark screen uniformity which is disappointing. Edit: I’m waiting to get more reviews and information before choosing between S95C and G3.
@@Sabru1985 The OLED off axis tint is so minimal that I did not see it until D-Nice told me the 65G3 we shipped him had a minimal ogg axis tint. The tint is so minimal that I feel it's a non-issue on the new G3. Also the screen uniformity is also very nicely improved.
I prefer the Brighter field of tulips I don't think the intention is lost in fact I think the "slight" loose of detail creates almost a depth of field effect on it and draws my eye more so yeah I like the left image way way more the right one is as yuck looking as the ferris wheel is on the Sony. As for the mountain the HDR destroys the detail here you can see it in the graph it's not even trying to render it correctly it's just blasting light at it and knackers it so in this case despite it being very dim the detail preservation is noticeably superior on the Sony. I wonder what a wildlife snow scene would look like on each TV ?
Beats the best...of 2022. It took a new QD panel to do it, if it truly does with Samsung processing. But 2023 Sony A95L QD OLED will have new QD OLED panel too and Sony's award winning XR processor to drive it. Sony A95L for the win, Best OLED TV 2023!
You have seen the A95L and like it best? I haven't seen any comparisons or full demos to show it is the best. Just wasn't sure if there was some video didn't know of.
Bit sad mate. It's a TV that's not released yet and you probably won't be buying this year. Why are you cheering for it like some kind of Sony cheerleader
Sony is still thousand $ more expensive than Samsung, and you're just throwing away money for a *very marginal* improvement. By the time Sony A95L comes out (probably in June), Samsung will cut down the prices. And by the end of this year/beginning next year, Samsung might give 50% off. Buying Sony is mostly just to brag about a TV at this point, for those who have just way too much money than sense.
All DV content is displayed as HDR10 on the Samsung, so you are not really losing anything (you are still getting HDR), unless you believe DV is significantly better than HDR10.
@@birgerolovsson5203 No, I mean HDR10. Dynamic metadata is a marketing buzzword IMO , no tangible difference between static (HDR10) and dynamic (DV, HDR10+) metadata in 99,9% of the content.
I usually prefer an “accurate” PQ…but in this comparison I prefer the look and feeling of skin tones on the S95C…it’s an acceptable and more preferable deviation…
It’s like…I want to like the color accuracy of the Sony more, but I can’t lie to myself, I prefer the punch and warmth of the S95C. Those skin tones look more sickly on the Sony, Everest looked so much brighter and punchier woth white than the Sony too. Hard to not prefer that personally.
This is not a fair comparison. S95c has improvements over S95B and Sony a95l will also improve over A95K .Ninety nine percent of tv enthusiasts would expect the S95c to beat the A95K since both of last years models were equal in performance
It's very fair because the 65" A95k is currently Sony's best TV as the release of the A95L is in July - so until then, this is Samsung's victory to enjoy. 90% of consumers shopping for a TV between now and July will only have the A95K as their only QD-OLED from Sony and they need to know why they should wait - right?
@@stopthefomoexactly!, why and IF they should wait at all too, like with peoples personal preferences maybe the things they care more about most in a tv, the sony a95k might already have in good enough spec for them, and they can save the extra money and get last years model instead of waiting. And also just for the tv nerd interest and fun of it all, to see the difference between s95c and a95k then s95c and a95L and g3 , and maybe even to older tvs , the more comparisons the more data and interesting exploration if your a tv nerd. Definitely an audience for that myself including, and who ever not interested can wait until the a95L vs S95cVs G3. Thats fine too. But theres something for all.
I'm just an average viewer, but to me, Dolby Vision is too dim in most scenes. I watched "The Ranch" on Netflix in Dolby Vision, and i felt my eyes straining to see everything throughout the entire show. I always found everything to be too dark, and was never impressed with any specular highlights. I don't care if it's more "accurate", i prefer the other HDR formats, which are more vibrant in color, and punchier in brightness.
Was going to get s95c… but looks like I’m getting G3 .. eoe who have it and value electronics and my Best Buy going at conference using all say it’s an absolute monster..
Great review, but Dolby Vision isn't just about brightness. It's about preserving detail in scenes that call for brightness that's too much for the TV to handle. In your example with the sun, Dolby Vision is working as intended. It's lowering the brightness so you can see more detail in the sun.
When’s the last time you looked at the sun and saw detail…….. Dolby Vision in this regard is lowering brightness which is not accurate. In REAL LIFE, things blow out in highlights. A shining sun off of a metal object like a car will look completely blown out to your eyes……….
@@tears2040 Dolby Vision will always prioritize detail over brightness. That's literally what it was designed to do. A lot of people think Dolby Vision is just about brightness and that's false. And it is accurate in this regard. If you were able to watch that scene on a 10,000nit Dolby Vision display, it would be bright *and* detailed. It's just that when your TV can't get as bright as the source, it prioritizes the detail, because that's what Dolby Vision was designed to do.
"More detail in the sun" is a ridiculous phrase. It's the sun, you're not supposed to see it. Around the sun is a better choice of words. Also, tone mapping is "about preserving detail in scenes that call for brightness that's too much for the TV to handle". This Sony DV tone mapping algorithm needs brighter TVS. The mountain scene is the only one where DV looks better (Imo). It doesn't work well to dim things to maintain the ratio of brightness when the absolute brightness range is so small.
I completely agree - but it's also context as the background is already so dark, lowering it further doesn't increase the effect so this approach works better in some scenes (tulips) than others (ferris wheel)
I just got the S95c 77” for $2999 opened box great deal??? Also I’m loosing sleep if I should exchange it for 77” LG C3 with that $3199 price … because Samsung is new to Oled and LG has been around for a long time… what u think FOMo?? Thx
This is NOT a fair comparison because you're comparing last-year's model Sony flagship to this year's model Samsung flagship. And without a $40,000 reference monitor Vincent borrows. See Vincent Theo's videos on Samsung's QD-OLED's.
First of all, FOMO, thanks SO much for all your effort and for all the work you put into your videos. I know this post os about the S95C but, I can’t find it anywhere. I may have missed it but, can you elaborate about the differences between the S90C from Best Buy and the S90CD from Costco???? I’m particularly interested on the 77” model. Besides the warranty, I believe there are other differences between those. Some say it is related to the screen, some say it is related to the audio. I’m not sure but, I read that the one from Costco comes with a more powerful audio system. Can you clear this up for is looking to get one? Thanks a lot!
Well I would expect this years QD OLED’s from Samsung and Sony to perform better than last years models. It’s nice to see the improvements, but it doesn’t mean that the Samsung S95C will be better than the Sony A95L. Granted the Samsung will most likely be better on price, but for overall picture quality I wouldn’t be surprised if this years Sony will have the better picture quality and motion. I also think that LG have made great strides with the G3 too, which looks really impressive for a OLED TV.
@@deantsar6246 The sony will release in Australia at 77" for about $11k. You can buy an S95C now for $6k (or less with promo discount). It is a hard sell to wait for the Sony. Maybe get it for $9k. And by that time the Sammy will be $5k. I dunno.
Dolby Vision is supposed to keep the ratio between bright and dark, so dolby vision is preferable. Anyway, HDR10+ is dead. Barely any studio or publisher uses it any more. Also comparing a next generation TV vs the TV with a panel from the same company but from last years models doen't surprise much when the newer model seems better. that is the whole point of a newer model, isn't it?
@@jackdubs25 no show on apple tv plus uses it only dolby vision. Maybe some off films for purchase. As for amazon that is it and is limited where as they use evrything with dolby vision
Honestly, everybody needs to start using DV bright instead of DV dark and you will be much happier. DV would have tested better here with bright and still be accurate. Also, you should only watch DV using internal apps or a 4k blu ray player with Sony.
Could you do the same for game mode? If Samsung only gave us an accurate way to display games I'd immediately go for the S95C especially with its 144 Hz support.
I can tell you Game mode is actually very accurate as well this time around with the Static HDR option (you can choose Active also). Accuracy is not an issue on the S95C in any mode or content.
I know so many people who got s95b and it turned up with bent screen, damaged or crapped its pants within 3 months. It’s really put me off buying Samsung
Sup Michael! I have to agree, and as I’ve been saying, they won’t issue a ton of firmware updates this year (I’m the only one saying this) as last year was a huge beta test fiasco that they don’t want this year.
Samsung may take the scene @ 16:08 in the movie “The Illusionist” but will it be there after FW UPDATES in 6 months later? Knowing Samsung more than likely they will make it disappear via FW UPDATE or if you don’t update your warranty will disappear as well.
This was an expected outcome comparing S95C with last years tech and kind of pointless IMHO. The real question is how long will it be before Samsung reduces the brightness with a firmware update. Waiting for the A95L release for a real comparison.
I am bias, don't understand why the heck you didn't use the same size TV...you did everything the same that you could except Dolby vision as Samsung doesn't support that, so why not make everything the same including the size of the TVs. Why WHy WHY!!!!! Breaking down a static image to show the difference is all well & fine, except of course that people aren't usually able to do this level of side by side comparisons Thank you very much for doing the comparisons for us, & overall I would agree with your assessment that Samsung is a bit better overall, though that snow mountain scene in Dolby vision was much much better.
Also how can you come to the conclusion that Dolby vision is less bright when the S95C is using a new QDoled panel that is brighter. The A95L is nearly twice as bright as A95K so when you measure Dolby vision on the A95K that peak brightness will be pushed higher.
Nice comparison even tho it’s kinda irrelevant.. a better comparison will be when you get a 77 inch’ Sony A95L and calibrate both and then compare them.. then let’s see who will be far superior and more accurate 😏
It's not irrelevant because the A95L that you're so hyped for will be using the same panel. You should be interested to learn what Samsung is able to do with it anyway
No buddy.. no one is hyped about the Sony A95L, calm down… it just makes more sense to compare 2 technologies from this year than one from this year and last year. Nobody cares what Samsung can do. We already established that Samsung can mess up screen accuracy with stupid updates. Smh.
There is many oled tv and qd-oled tv model don't have bloom shader effect or glow for video games. Oled tv and qd oled tv is not true realistic That is why Panasonic plasma tv still wins.
Fomo your reviews are great. I really enjoy watching them. I'm trying to decide between the Samsung s95c and the qn95c. My room is not bright. It has two table lamps and windows that are covered with blinds. Which one do you recommend and which has the best picture quality? Thank you so much. Peter
I often find that HDR10 the bog standard is the best overall. Because it's simply just pushes out the full range. It's still High DYNAMIC range. Just not as much changes as Dolby vision. So even if not always accurate, basically you get more brightness out of it. And Samsung's Active Tone mapping is great. I like how it take it and make more out of it. Dolby vision can get really dim. Even if that is creators intent. Well perhaps I don't find that look appealing. I am the one watching and it's my TV, I am going to do what is pleasing to me. I don't give AF what the director want. Even more so since many filmmakers have gone bonkers with bad setting. Looking at you Ozark and many other shows. Completely desaturated and not even realistic lighting at all. So how it the 'creators intent" the right way when they actually made it wrong. I want more HDR pop, nice colors (not over saturated or neon) just full and bright. I want more shadow detail, which happens under Active tone mapping because it allows you to see more in the scene. I don't like crushing. "Intent" or not. I do like that you get a choice with Samsung now. Some movies might just be best with static mapping and other active mapping.
It actually is not a good comparison, because assume Sony DV implementation is correct. Stacey Spears would probably say that there are issues with Sony implementation.
i would have liked to see real dark content like shows nowadays have really dark scenes, to see the shadow details. Also nothing about processing smooth gradations..
@@carlosr.2027 not really sure considering they didn't make one last year. Either they started cutting 77 with 1st gen panels or it will have 2nd gen 🤷
*I believe Samsung is going to leave things high with HDR TONE MAPPING 😎📺 also the color accuracy It is quite correct we will have to see how LG and Sony respond this year💡*
I feel like you should be testing these TV’s in their brightest movie modes. We’re paying thousands of dollars for that extra brightness, we’re not going to be limiting its capabilities
S95C not available in Germany before end of April. Priced at 6399€ currently as startin gprice. Want this TV, but not for this price. Hope it goes down by a lot and quickly so.
Can you please elaborate on brightness throttling (TPC) in prolongued dark scenes for at least top OLEDs (QD-OLED): how severe, how to turn-off? Thanks!
Given the burn in trouble on the QD-OLED (and nerfing firmware), wether was the algorythm or not, is that the newer models are actually compiting against a OLED panel with 10+ years of experience. If it was on my budget, LG's G3 would be my next TV (or heatsink+MLA flavor of the year TV). Happy with my C2 right now. Too bad for Sony and Samsung. Not knocking them, but the technology is way too new. LG seems the way to go.
I think WOLED is the inferior technology. Its tech is basically the same as it has been the last couple of years. All they're doing this year is adding another component or another layer to the technology. It's like NASAs rocket compared to SpaceXs rocket. NASAs rocket is old and outdated but has been retrofited with new components.
You really should look into the workings of each technology.. there is no way for wOled to have better long-term usability against QD oled.. learn how is the emissive part of wOled works.
don't get me wrong, guys. I know the variations of the technology. But Samsung track record isn't spotless... their flagship soundbar was having a lot of issues when launched. And as I said, this technology hasn't aged or been tested as woled. And it's not like I'm running to get a G3 right now... maybe down the line. But a QD-oled either Sony or Samsung, is not in my radar. And the C2 has set me up, for a least two more years without upgrading.
I didn’t have a issue with accuracy for s95b as long as it was in filmmaker mode , it was the terrible colour production in the game mode and no way to properly fix the accuracy in game mode , have they fixed that or are you forced to look at way over saturated colours and brightness just because you like gaming ?
I bought the s95c a couple of days ago. I noticed that it cannot passthrough uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1 audio. Do you know if this is a problem that's going to be fixed through a firmware update? This is unbelievable these days, and more knowing that TVs from previous years do support these formats.
Yes. But s95c in 2023 panel. But anyway they are to close. I’m sure there are scenes where A95K wins. Personally I’m waiting for A95M Phosphorescent QD-OLED.
@@stopthefomo fomo. Why do you fanboi so hard. The A95L is twice as bright as the A95K, I've witnessed them side by side. So all these comparisons making full on assertions about Dolby vision vs HDR 10+ are almost entirely pointless. Not to mention the fact Dolby vision is the most available version of dynamic HDR 😂.
