A comprehensive review of my samurai armour after having used it and abused it for 4 years. If you are interested in buying samurai armour from Iron Mountain Armory, then this is the perfect video for you.
I've tested and used my samurai armour in all sorts of weather condition, combat and video making, so I feel I'm the position of being able to speak about the pros and cons.
We'll also examine the condition of every component of my armour, after such use.
Here is a link to my original video from 4 years ago

An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action.
The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear".
Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolving through mail and metal plate into today's modern composites.
Significant factors in the development of armour include the economic and technological necessities of its production. For instance, plate armour first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper.
Well-known armour types in European history include the lorica hamata, lorica squamata, and the lorica segmentata of the Roman legions, the mail hauberk of the early medieval age, and the full steel plate harness worn by later medieval and renaissance knights, and breast and back plates worn by heavy cavalry in several European countries until the first year of World War I (1914-15). The samurai warriors of feudal Japan utilised many types of armour for hundreds of years up to the 19th century.

I think a tailor would be delighted if you show up with a piece of armour for repairs. They must be very used to regular jobs like fitting, fixing and repairing pants, dresses and shirts every day until it becomes a routine. So showing up with armoured sleeves must really break their rut and get them a little excited.

Great video, I personally find a lot of pros and cons with Iron Mountain. I wish they had more options with metal used. Such as types, and thickness. Covering armour on my Instagram and handling historical pieces I’ve come to learn that every piece is super customized. I’ve seen a Do made of 2.5 mm steel. But the owner was very rich in the past. So who you were in the past played a massive impact on what your armour could be.

Of course i didn't put it through the ringer like you did (mostly festivals), but it is a sturdy durable kit that still looks new, just a couple of scuffs and the finger loop broke, but thats an easy fix. Very thorough evaluation of the product. I train in Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu and was thinking about ordering armor from Iron Mountain. Interestingly, I'm also a leatherworker, so I was interested in what you said about the cuirass lining. You could order 2/3 oz pigskin leather and apply with a good contact cement, such as Barge, to either the existing lining or whatever is underneath that. I almost finished constructing a laced mogami dō, even using tomegawa (I used heavy thread) to maintain the stiffness of the plates. But It's not going to move or present like I'd like it to for dojo demos. Thanks for the great video!

I'm a fairly new owner (couple of months now) of taisho-class suit from Iron Mountain Armory. I love the suit and the quality is great, but there are a few places where I can see that stitching might break or come loose somewhere in near future (but I hope not). As with you, I bought it for active use. There is clothing stiched under the shoulder protection or sode and it attaches to the plates via threads. Couple of threads have broken already, but my wife stiched them up. Nothing serious, but I havent done anything really active yet. No other complaints so far.

From around the 8th century, the armor had a structure in which iron plates were stacked. The Japanese bow is large and powerful, and the arrows have evolved. Iron is contained inside the arrow, and it has a large mass and is diagonally attached with wings to keep going straight. As a result, the arrow moves straight at high speed while rotating with a large mass, so it penetrates 3 pieces of 9 cm wood and an iron plate. It also penetrates a 3 cm thick wooden shield, so it seems that the samurai armor is made of stacked iron plates.

I went with the mid-level armor as well and I agree with you about the strings and the quality of them as well. I’ve also had several metal chain links end up on the ground that have come off from unknown places in my armor. Some around the thumb link I’ve seen. The arms aren’t easily worn/attached. And I need to find a way of attaching/wearing them better. And lastly, wearing it in heat/humidity is the worst. Then again I live in Florida..

Raf, to forever fix your issue with the kote, just tie them to the do. I had the exact same problem with the kote sewing getting blown out very easily. I simply loop the upper kote ties under the sode toggles, the kote stay in place perfectly while allowing 100% full unobstructed motion. Also, even with the kote tied to the do, it still looks exactly the same as if the kote were tied normally together. If you are unsure how I do this, I made a video called "How I put on my Samurai armor alone." /bow

Hello All, Sorry to hijack a bit, but I figure this would be a good video to share this information about getting yourself a set of armor at a discount. I recently upgraded my armor and am actually looking at selling my set of Iron Mountain Armory Samurai armor. If you are on youtube and you look up "How to put on Samurai Armor" the number one video is from the Inc Brothers, that is my old channel. It has been well used, of course, but I am looking to sell it for a pretty steep discount. It is based on their Kenshin model with Miyamoto Musashi inspired symbols painted over the armor. It is the intermediate level they offer. I made a little modification to help the "sleeves" stay in place reliabily but otherwise it is in great condition overall. Best for someone between 5 and 6 feet tall I'd say. Ideally, less that 200lbs, but the chest can be adjusted up if needed. If anyone is interested in more information, leave a comment below and I will send you an email. Cheers, Shiro

First of all: very interesting. Thanks. Regarding the thickness of the armor, I have some questions. I did some research about 16th century armor and in most sources the authors outline, that the tosei gusoku had iron/ steel plates of about 2mm, or even 3mm thickness. Now, regarding your comment about the material, you mentioned, that the iron mountain armor is about 1,2 mm thick. That's also, what I found on their homepage FAQ. There they point out , that 1,2 mm is historically accuarte for the 16th century. 1,2 mm, 2mm , or even 3mm is a big difference and I ask myself, what's accurate for that century? Do you have any sources, literature, online sources, articles etc., about the thickness of tosei gusoku, or about the 1,2 mm being accurate? Thanks for your help, keep up the good work. Best regards

You'd be surprised how historically accurate that movie is. One thing is the exchange of military knowledge didn't happen between America and Japan, rather between the Japanese and the Dutch. Only thing that's incredibly inaccurate is the Japanese being amateurs regarding firearms. They'd been using it (samurai included) for centuries before the period shown in the movie, so a foreigner having to teach them how to handle muskets makes no sense at all

The traditional Japanese lacquer is made from the sap of the Urushi tree which contains a high concentration of Urushiol. When the sap is cured for a day or several in warm humid conditions the Urushiol polymerizes into Urushi lacquer. Urushiol is also what makes Poison Ivy and Poison Oak poisonous so the wet sap is dangerous to work with; therefore, traditional lacquer work takes a great deal of time and care and is extremely expensive. A traditionally lacquered suit of armour would be ridiculously expensive. Additionally, properly cured Urushi lacquer can be safely handled by most people, but can be problematic for those with a severe Urushiol (poison ivy, oak, etc.) allergies. On a related note, I hate to imagine the fate of a person severely allergic to usushiol living in feudal Japan where plates, chopsticks, and other food utensils were routinely made from lacquered wood.

Another great video. Do you have much information about Ashigaru paper armour? I have also heard of it but haven't read or seen many sources about it. I expect it was made from dozens of layers of fibrous paper glued together and lacquered. As an experiment I once made a few panels of A5/A6 size from layers of linen and glue. The result was a light but very strong material that held up against knife stabs, was pretty much cut proof and even held up against a .22 airgun pellet at point blank. I wonder if linen was used by the Japanese to make armour?

I’m saving for armor I’m not sure from what era but I might just pick some cool stuff from there site an mix it together I know I won’t be historically accurate but as long as i spiritually connect to the armor then I don’t care.

I wish there was a content creator that matched your level of depth which focused on or featured ancient chinese arms and armor.

My Gashira Yoroi is kept on display, has never been outside and rust is breaking through the paint on the links, and small plates on the Sode and Haidate. They obviously paint the colour to order from bare stock material and mine was obviously rusty metal to start with. Looked fine to start with but after several months the rust started breaking through. Very disappointing.

I recommend full body weight training at least once a week, it will improve fitness, posture and strength. Improving your armour wearing and reinactment experience big time. Love your channel Metatron!

Don't worry lad, you aren't alone in this haha. Would love to buy a set, but: 1) I need to save probably for this year. 2) I want to get some decent gains beforehand. 3) I'm getting into Buhurt, so this is another thing I have to spend money on. 😂 Please though, if you buy a set let us know! What type were you thinking of getting?
