Brief little aside about the "westaboo" meme, I was listening to Thomas Sowell recently. He had a point about the "cultural cringe", when society in large part suddenly realizes that they are so far behind that they must change, or be lost entirely to history. Japan is probably the most poignant example, but certainly not the only, where the paradigm shift was so sudden and wide spread. The other interesting part is that it worked. In 50 years, Japan went from several hundred years behind in technology to being a rival to more western powers such as Russia and the USA. While today, we certainly look back with romance to the age of samurai (which certainly is a story born from Meiji and later canonization of Bushido), it's important to have perspective and realize that the large majority of the country was not happy with the samurai and the old ways.

Congratulations! I've always enjoyed history but it's been rare to find a good channel that properly provides context for the events and explains how it's affected culture. The content itself being presented in a very entertaining yet informative way is just icing, it's the information that got me to subscribe. So hopefully you keep it up, maybe diving deeper into Japanese culture generally and the Samurai's place in it once all the chaos of war dies down. I think the content that will come with the beginning of the Tokugawa Shogunate proper will be very interesting.

It's just that unlike up in Echigo there was no equivalent of Kagetora that the retainers and other half brothers or cousins can defect to. Support was strong enough for them to obey Katsuyori, who wasn't an absolute idiot. It's just that if he retreated without any gains, "at least I didn't get annihilated, right?" in his mind would not have stopped a coup to replace him or vassals defecting to other greater lords.** *unlike Jared Leto crying to Colin Farrell in acceptance of what will happen, which still pisses off Rosario Dawson **people tend to think only the clans in Shogun are the daimyo, but actually each province you see there has smaller daimyo that obey the bigger daimyo...there just aren't more distinct terms like how there used to be Earls but centuries later you have Kings with Dukes as lieutenants and these in turn have earls or counts.

Katana was exported to China, Mongolia, South Korea and Southeast Asia. Those armies were equipped with katana.
