The young St Francis of Assisi at the beginning of his conversion, while praying in the old small abandoned Chapel, the image of Christ in the crucifix miraculously spoke and said, “Go and repair my Church, as you see is falling into ruin,” and thereby was he awakened to new purpose.
The twelfth century cross, perhaps painted by a Syrian monk is now preserved in the Basilica of St Claire in Assisi. Franciscans revere this crucifix because it reminds us of that decisive hour in the life of our holy father Francis. The San Damiano Crucifix contains a wealth of Christological and theological significance. Here is a short description of the San Damiano cross.
