I've been playing in the sand for 30 plus years. The SS360 is the first significant "new" tire in a very long time. There is always a balance between weight, flotation, and traction. The Sandcrafts are light, and they are a traditional paddle otherwise. They pull well and let you slide the car. They RPM quickly. The 360's float better, which means you are creating less of a "hill" in front of the tire, and creating less work. Since they actually have tread on the front, they let the 4wd add to the work moving the car. They don't slide as much, which can be a bummer if ya want to slide the car. I am going to go with a set of the 360's. I can see the logic behind both, but the extra $ just doesn't pay back for the way we use the car. I think a lot of the traditional paddles out there for SXS cars have way too many paddles, and move a lot more sand than necessary, creating more load on the drivetrain, especially the drive belts. Also, look at the weight...some of these suckers are very heavy. Unsprung weight isn't a good thing in any motorsport. Different strokes for different folks...think about how you are going to use the car and do what makes sense for you.

So after a year of riding the system 3s, does CJ still have them or did he can them. I have the system 3s and haven't had any issues but I feel they don't grip enough when your going up a hill like Oldsmobile. I'm contemplating on buying some CST paddles. What your opinion on them after a year. Do you think there's a big difference or am I just throwing money away making the switch.
@austinchase5882
@austinchase5882 Год назад
@@stevenortiz0782 I bought a set of SS360s last week and within two runs up Sand Mountain in Little Sahara Rec Area, Utah I felt the same thing you mentioned - not enough grip. The sand at Little Sahara was a bit dark and heavy that day (still wet from some rain a couple days ago), and Sand Mountain in long steep hill - all great factors for a true test of tires performance. I did a few runs with my current Skat Traks, switched the tires, and then did two runs in the SS360s. With that back-to-back test, I noticed a significant reduction in grip with the SS360s. For example, as usual to be kind to my machine, I did not floor it with my skat traks, and I made it up Sand Mountain with a challenged by progressive feel, reaching the summit at 35mph, as read on the stock speedometer. With the SS360s I had to floor it within the first 100 yards of the climb, and I still wasn't getting up to the speed I was at the same point with my Skats. On the way up the long mountain with the SS360s, my machine did not have that progressive feel but that of a real struggle, reaching the top at 28mph. I'm sure I took some life off my belt with that run. One the second run with the SS360s, I bailed out 75% of the way up because we were barely making it up, and I knew definitively by then that I wanted to return the tires. We knew also that we wouldn't be able to to even get to the back side of Sand Mountain with the normal bowls, because with our Skats, we struggled to get up the steep rise and high turn in at the saddle to get to the back side. The SS360s would not have even gotten us to the back side to the bowls. So we returned to camp, unmounted the tires, and returned them to the seller, for a small "use" fee. The one variable that I could not control that day is tire/wheel size: my Skats are 30x13x14 (height, width, rim diameter) in the rear (true measurement of 27" on 7psi, mounted) while the SS360s were 32x12x15 in the rear (true measurement of 30" on 7psi, mounted). As I was returning the SS360s to the seller, he thought the reason I wasn't able to get the same speed and performance out of the SS360s was a the increased height, both the tire and the rim. He has a point. However, I have read several forums of X3 owners that went from 30" to 32" and they didn't report a decrease in performance. But I don't rely on theory. I like hard evidence. So my next plan is to borrow a friend's Skats (with the same Xtreme paddles in the rear and buffs in the front), but as 32" with a 15" rim. I'll take both sets out to the dunes and see how they perform on difficult terrain at Little Sahara, UT or at St Anthony, ID. To clarify, I love my Skats. I have never had an issue with their climbing ability. I'm just trying to get a couple more inches of ground clearance so I don't have to worry as much about bottoming out my front end coming down our steep dunes at speed or hitting a steep dune at speed. These SS360s just popped up on a search of mine and they were inexpensive ($1,800) compared to new Skats ($2,400). My ground clearance did increase with the SS360s from 13in to 16in, measured to the bottom of the skip plate at the driver door. So that was hard to give back that ground clearance going back to my old tires, but it was worth it. I'll just find some bigger skats soon :)

@@GLifeUTV Please consider it, do you have any interest in doing more technical videos at all? Could be a good supplement to your content, maybe drive more Mfr. to consider review samples. I think a lot of people are aware of these SS360, and are wondering if they are a suitable alternative, and how they compare Directly to a standard paddle in all scenarios. We are in the Oregon Dunes with Lots of sticks and roots, and punctures like that are a REAL consideration, the weight penalty is not wanted, but as a compromise, these might be better all around than a set of STUs here. And especially a set of skats for reliability and price. Be nice if someone could make a similar tire and get the weight down with a kevlar construction, best of both worlds, puncture reliability and low rotational mass. Dig your channel, get your buddies to help with the content more, running multiple ride cameras on their rigs and more comfortable in front of the camera.

I have a set of SS360 on my General XP1000, which is more of a cruiser in the dunes, and only 100 HP. Skat Trak and Ruff Buff on the RZR Pro XP (181 HP). I've found the SS360 better suited for low HP cars and good all around, stable, pretty predictable and don't dig too deep, which is good for a lesser powered car. On the other hand, I tried the same SS360 (30 x 10 and 30 x 12) on my Pro XP and hated them. Too much power for the SS360. They do make a HP model SS360 with adds an 1/8" of tread depth, but for me paddles are more fun for sprited duning.

@@austinchase5882 Exactly that, yes. Some spin is desirable but too much lack of traction as the car evens out over the power range is no good. The SS360HP may be a good answer for higher HP cars - I just haven't personally tried them to comment.

I gave you a thumbs up and respect you posted a video. However you did say your new to Sand and it shows from some of the things you said. You ran over a branch or a piece of metal debris and the puncture looks like it can be patched as it is not on the side wall. You have to play with the air pressures of any tire to adjust to conditions while in Glamis cause it can make huge difference. Price difference is crazy but all depends on how you like to drive and what you prefer to do. Drag racing get paddles, over all get driving get the SS3.
@GLifeUTV
@GLifeUTV 3 года назад
Possibly a branch or piece of glass, never going to know. But its is not repairable. Its a slash and the slash is going with the threads. So it is tearing at the threads. I can stick my thumb thru it.. Ive patched tires at a shop for 10 years.. i still remember how. And wouldn't trust patching.. i contacted skat trak to possible vulcanize the tire patch on.. but even Ramon at Skat Trak did not suggest it due to the tear on the threads. I appreciate your feedback either way. And we had both sets of tires at 12psi. We didnt try at different pressures. But its definitely something to consider next visit. Thanks for your input 👌👍
