BONUS Tip - Use the Farrow Flow - it evenly distributes your abrasive while also significantly increasing your blast speed (even at very low pressures)
Here are five tips to help you sandblast safely and prevent distortion:
1. Blast at an angle: Our tests allowed us to determine that the ideal angle is anywhere between 35 and 45 degrees. This will help the abrasive skip across the surface while still providing an efficient clean.
2. Use an XL nozzle: During testing, we learned that the extra-large nozzle allowed us to stand further away from the part while blasting. As you’ve probably already figured out, this also makes it easier to achieve that 35 to 45-degree angle. And no, this isn’t a sales pitch for the XL High Performance Nozzle, though we are pretty partial to it.
3. Keep the nozzle moving: Do not let the nozzle sit idle on one spot for too long. This can cause heat build-up, which can also lead to warping. Moving the nozzle back and forth evenly across the part, even if you have to overlap several times, provides the best results.
4. Utilize smaller size AND lower density: When you use hard and/or heavier abrasives, such as aluminum oxide or garnet, you increase the likelihood of peening and warping. To reduce your chance of distortion, try to opt for one of the softer abrasives, such as plastic, corncob, JetMag, crushed glass, and soda.
5. Use lower air pressure whenever possible: One of the blast pots that was used in testing does not have an air regulator installed and because of that, we were usually blasting at 90 to 100 PSI. Considering this, and following the four steps listed above, we didn’t find there to be any issues with warping. Try to blast at a lowest pressure that still allows for maximum productivity.
By following these tips, you can prevent warping and produce high-quality work when sandblasting parts that are susceptible to distortion.
