I wish I had each of these sanders to really test out and compare for you guys. But I don't have any sponsors, and my budget won't support it. Despite that, I think I made a great decision with this purchase. What do you think?

I think that your title is entirely misleading. Glad you're happy with your purchase, but it was not what I wanted to see for what the title promised.

I wouldn't say that the Mirka Deros and the 3m are essentially the same sander. They do look alike but some of the features that the Mirka has the 3m lacks. Such as a brake. A plug that detaches from the tool. Variable speed through the paddle and a App tailored speed max with the paddle. A connector that Festool hose fits without an adapter. The option of purchasing the weighted 125mm pad so that the Mirka can be a 125/5 and a 150/5 sander. Not many 125/5 sanders out there. And a systainer storage case that connects to my other sanders and vac. Imo the Mirka Deros is the most comfortable sander I have had. I do have the Festool ETS EC 125/5 and it is also a very good sander. Imo you won't go wrong with either of them when it comes to performance.
@MattMadeIt123
@MattMadeIt123 Год назад
Thanks for taking the time to share this info. From what you said, the Mirka does seem to offer quite a bit more than the 3M. Perhaps that justifies the price difference. I think in the future, I'll stick to talking about tools I've actually used. Lesson learned.

@@MattMadeIt123 I wasn't trying to be a dick, I guess it just comes across even unintentionally lol. I was just sander nerding. The Mirka is currently the overall best sander I've been fortunate enough to have. It keeps up with Festool in dust extraction, but is just more comfortable, and a bit lighter than the ETS EC 150/5. And significantly lighter than the older ETS EQ 150/5. Longevity is the wildcard with the Mirka imo. Lots of people have had issues with reliability. I was concerned when buying it because of that. I read the manual and they recommend keeping the max RPM in the 7000's if using a protection pad for net paper. I've got mine set at 7800 max even though it is capable of 10k. Not sure if that will give better reliability or not, but I imagine there's many that run the sander balls out, and it is the control modular that seems to go out on them. I'm almost a 1yr in on the 3yr warranty. I do know about what to expect from a comparable Festool sander in terms of reliability and longevity, and that's what I hope for given it's more expensive than the 150 EC. Anyways sorry for the off topic ramble. I am interested in the Mirka styled sanders and will pick one up to compare when the right deal comes around, and thanks for the vid.

This has really helped me with my purchase. I was on the fence with Festool because I didn't want to replace all my other good tools given their proprietary dust extraction, but you gave me confidence I could use it with my existing hose. That led me to convert my Rigid to hepa filtration and an auto switch for vacs that is mounted on the wall. I could even get an inline cyclone for bigger particles if I wanted later on. For about $100 I adapted my good Rigid vac with the main features I wanted from a $700+ dust extractor that I otherwise didn't really need. Now I have a massively upgraded sander and I can't wait to work with it and know that I made a good, or at least defensible, purchase that will serve me well.

Trust me brother, you made the right choice. I have a festool at work and a mirka clone at home. The ability to grab the sander where ever you need on the festool is so worth it. Trying to round over edges or even vertical sanding while keeping your hand in one spot on the mirka clone is a hassle for me at least.

This has been up for a year. Did you get an interface pad to go between the sander base and the 3M Extract mesh sandpaper? Mesh disks will eat the hooks on your sander's pad and interface pads are a lot cheaper to replace than the sander's pad.

The one thing that the Festool definitely excels in is the angled dust hose connection. All of the other sanders have a straight hose connector which can sometimes get in the way. Only reason I wouldnt get the Festool is I prefer the speed adjustable paddle as opposed to the on off switch. I find the paddle switch helps when i'm blending in my sanding etc.

Have you found the 5mm travel to be too aggressive for some sanding? Just wondering because I primarily use a makita cordless sander that has a 3mm travel and it works well but I wish it was faster. So I’m trying to see if I should get the 3mm or 5mm festool sander.
@NWGR

@@Painfulwhale360 Not at all. The 5mm will achieve the same finish as the 3mm, just quicker. That does mean you need to be careful about how aggressive you're sanding though. I'm very happy with my 150/5 and if buying today I'd make the same choice.

If your going to run the 3m mesh paper you might wanna look into a festool pad saver. I’ve on my second hook and loop pad bc the hooks sand off eventually bc the stick through the mesh. Just a heads up.

@MattMadeIt123
@MattMadeIt123 Год назад
The ETS EC models like I got come in 125mm(5") and 150mm(6"). But Festool has other sanders as small as 90mm(3.5"). They have a fairly extensive lineup of surface prep options.

@shughes599 So I looked into this, and a 150 pad will fit on the 125 but not the other way around. So if you want both sizes and want to save some money, buy the 125 and a 150 pad. You should be good to go. Wish I'd thought of this.

Not to sound like I am drunk on the green koolaide , but the Festool green braided hose is a far superior hose as compared to the dust right hose. The dust right hose is heavy and it wants to pull on the sander. Does the Dust right work yeah it does but the Festool hose is just easier to use when doing work for any length of time.. As for the Festool sander oh my goodness we have all used the easy to get sanders that run 50-100 bucks . At that price point the balance of the sanders are all about the same . They shake the living piss out of your hands. I am not a spring chicken so that amount of vibration is just too much on my hands.. One last point on that vibration. I am not a doctor but the vibration exposure of the inexpensive units just can't be good for you in your later years. You can get a Festool brushed motor sander for roughly half of the brushless and your hands will thank you .
@MattMadeIt123
@MattMadeIt123 Год назад
I did get a Festool hose for the sander. You are correct about the weight. The Festool hose is much lighter and better suited for sanding. I still use the Dust Right hose with my track saw.

I'm about to buy one of these also. The one thing I have against the Festool is the need to use their proprietary paper, that is expensive and not necessarily easily attainable when in a jam. That in itself is why I am leaning towards the 3M. I also was very curious about the Mirka, but it seems like the features between Mirka and 3M are the same, but the price is less for the 3M. Do you have any input on the sandpaper aspect of your choice, considering that you came from the Dewalt which uses sandpaper from anywhere?

There are several options for sandpaper that work with the Festool sander. I'm mostly using 3M Xtract Cubitron 2 mesh discs. Check out my video review at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WrPpdKwMYzY.html I also recently picked up some Serious Grit sanding Discs.
