**UPDATE 2/20/18: I've used it very little actually and the reason why is because it has trouble with larger video files. I got fed up and contacted support and now I'm in the process of getting it replaced. Supposedly this is a known issue and they have a newer one that doesn't have the problem. I'll keep you guys posted on results. **
If you’re like me and are looking for an alternative method of transferring or backing up files from your iPhone or iPad, you must check out this product. After watching my video, you’ll be more familiar with what this device does and how it can help you. You’ll see how easy it is to setup and transfer files, as well as see some frustrations. Thanks for the review I have an old iphone 5 16GB using on my smooth 4 gimbal for video only. Glad it writes files directly to the external drive.

Something I think bears mentioning is that iPhones take photos in HEIC format, and that's the format that gets transferred to the iXpand flash drive. Transferring the photo files from the iXpand flash drive to a Windows PC keeps those files in HEIC format. Windows won't open those files unless you install a codec, which you can download from the Microsoft store for a small fee. I didn't know this until I 'experimented' with a group of picture files that I wasn't too concerned about losing. I'm not sure at this point if the files would have been converted had I connected my iPhone directly to the laptop. According to what I can find online, they are supposed to automatically convert to a compatible mode in this case. The HEIC does convert to jpg when a photo is emailed. Edited to add that I just connected my iPhone directly to my Windows 10 laptop and went to the DCIM folder to view the image files there. (Took a bit of playing around to get Windows to see the phone as a storage device). The photos there appear as jpg's. So it is in transferring to the iXpand that they are not converted to jpg, which is unfortunate. And a caution to anyone thinking of doing backups this way.

I tried to do the same on my IPHONE 7. Came to a screen that asked " Do you want to back up or restore your photo library. Does restore mean put photos on your phone? i guess I want to choose back up in order to pull photos from my phone and put them on the iXpand. Automatic backup is not a good idea to pick, right?

When you connect it to a computer to download the pictures there, does the file keep the original info (same name, date taken, etc)? Also, did you figure out how to see the preview of the video or picture? Thanks!

The metadata should be preserved, but never really checked. As for previewing of files, your computers Finder or Windows Explorer should do that, right? Unless you meant within the sandisk app, then no, don't think there is a way to choose a file to see a preview.

hblady1 I think it’s data transfer only not power. You might be better with the genuine Apple Lightning to USB3 camera adapter as it also allows for a charging cable

I am literally trying to back-up 7,194 photos don't ask me why so many, that's besides the point, I purchased the sandisk so I can back up my photos to my computer. I have tried to transfer my photo's directly from my iPhone 7 to my Mac computer and I never could get iPhoto to open all the photo's I wanted to download and after 5-10mins, iPhoto would crash. That's why I purchased this sanDisk device. When I plug in my lightning cable it says downloading, but it never downloads anything.

There are directions online on how to reset the device, or you can contact their support. They were nice about replacing mine, even though the problem was with me and my understanding. These come formatted as FAT32 by default, which does not support files >4GB. I had to reformat it to NTFS or something else....have you tried moving just a single file first to make sure it works? Have you downloaded the latest software version from the app store? Good luck!

So i have a very important court date coming up. I had to screenshot over 1k messages between me and my ex for my lawyer to go through. I stored them in a separate file on my phone. Can i upload that file of conversation screen shots for my lawyer on to her computer or will it backup all my photos and not let me choose a separate file? Thank you

Mine broke! the part where the usb metal part connects to the gray part just like broke. I was able to just slide it off which disconnects the usb metal part to the gray part and inside I found the micro sdhc card..do you know a way I can insert this micro sd card into another usb card so I can transfer my files? I already contacted the warranty place but no luck yet

I had warrantee work done and they replaced mine pretty easily. If you have a microSD card just get an micro to SD card adapter and plug it in your computer. I wonder if you could just upgrade it to a larger microSD inside :)

Just wanted to let you guys know I ran into some problems transferring some large files...I'm talking about >500MB. It just kills the app for my iphone X. Support has approved a exchange for me so I'll be mailing it in this weekend. They said the new one will not have this issue...we'll see.

I don't know...does anyone else know? I believe it only works with pictures and videos...but the new iOS updates may allow more functionality that hasn't been tested yet. Besides, theres Office 365 and Google docs/sheets that you can use where all of this is in the cloud.

No. It retains the original quality and size. It doesn’t downsize or compress files.

I do amateur videography and have the 11 pro max 64 obviously looking for something to helps free up the memory on vacation or on the field. Tried the dongle and a card reader w a 128 high speed as card but it took 14 mins for 6 gigs of video. How’s the upload speed on this one

Moving large video files to this thing from my phone still takes some time. Its not fast. Just set it and come back to it. I'm moving many many gigs at a time though. Keep in mind, I've got some knock off USB to iphone adapters like this, and they are WAY WAY worse in terms of speed....like HOURS and HOURS more to transfer similar amounts of data...so the SanDisk is good comparatively.

You need to transfer to your iPhone to watch (pretty sure). However you can save directly to the drive. You can play off the drive on your smart tv.

Yes you need to reformat it as it comes formatted as fat32, which has a file size limit. Try NTFS or exfat. I think I went with the former.

Hi, you just plug it into your ipad/iphone and the app will load. From there you can copy files to/from your device. Once you copy some files over to the iXpand, it'll ask if you want to delete it from your device to save room :)

One reviewer mentions contacts, but I've never heard "Settings" as part of this. Your question shows why Apple SHOULD have invented this, and then you have ONE option beyond the "CLOUD!!" [ mysterious, big brother CLOUD!! ] :-)

Am I right to assume this won’t hold PSD or Procreate files? Really need an external memory device of some kind to transfer my design files from my iPad to my PC. Can’t use cloud drive either as my wifi isn’t working properly where my PC is located. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried again by selecting very specific files, making note of them and then checking later? Are they actual movie files on your phone that was captured by the phone vs downloaded clips (instagram/Snapchat etc)? Have you checked your firmware version (latest version of the app and iOS)? It should work...

It worked perfectly till I deleted all the photos after saving them and the memory was still full and I couldn’t save not even one picture because it says it is full. Since then I haven’t been able to use it any more. If somebody knows how to free space it, i would appreciate it.

I reformatted the drive from Fat32 to ExFat and that allowed for larger files >4gig to get loaded. That was the problem I ran into this whole time! Another RU-vidr commented somewhere in the posts to let me know.

This device works until the iPhone 7 .... the sand disk iXpand Drive does not work with the iPhone X can not store the files or documents from the iPhone X to the memory sand Disk iXpand Drive usb3. It says it is not compatible when trying to save any file or document it says. The IXpand device you have connected uses an unsupported format ... I have been slow to fix the Firmware, and using another device equal to 3 and none of them support the iXpand Drive ... this is only for storage on the iXpand Drive because to read the device if it works ... in conclusion it is Infuncional , if you have an iPhone X and want to use the iXpand drive, do not buy it because it does not work or if you have the iXpand drive and want to update your iPhone (6.7) to the iPhone X, think twice before you get disappointed as happened to me that after having all the functionalities to download documents from the email, save them or send them by mail, swim in this you can do it ... wait until they update the compatibility of the devices oscardjd@gmail.com

Did you download the app and try again? I think I ran into this before but just had to get the iXpand app and it was recognized. You can also try formatting the thumb drive first.
