I watched this several times looking more closely at various characters, their eyes, noticing facial expressions, etc. Smirky Lennox who is arrogant and presumptuous, enjoys irritating and humiliating any one he does not like. Loves to prove he is the dandy in every circumstance. Charlotte seems caught completely out of her comfort zone, but doesn’t know if she should refuse. I don’t quite know why she didn’t refuse. Anyone?? Alexander is annoyed that Lennox refuses to maintain a comfortable distance. I’ve never seen him this fierce before. Good play Ben.

Tom ignores Arthur’s suggestion to replace the elephant and simply swallows Lennox’s balloon; Arthur has Toms best interest at heart - Lennox only wants money and power. Lennox is whispering in Toms ear that Colbourne is possessive, short tempered and doesn’t play fair - sad Tom won’t listen to his own brother and, being seduced by the worst person in Sanditon I can’t for this evening

The archery contest is so well put together. And the acting is top tier. You can tell how Charlotte does not appreciate being used as a tool by Lennox to rile up the Colbourne. Thank you for these clips...they're greatly appreciated. Miss Heywood and Col. Lennox: A match between them would not be advantageous to either. Miss Heywood has looks, a pleasing disposition and courage, but with 11 brothers and sisters, her marriage portion is probably nil and, very likely, no family connections to promote a military man's advancement in his career. Col. Lennox is doubtless only looking for dalliance with an agreeable lady while stationed in Sanditon. Miss Heywood, when she eventually bestows her heart and hand, would do well to settle on Mr. Colbourne, who, despite his present alarming disposition, will probably be a much more steady and trustworthy candidate for the long term... Here's to you, Charlotte and Alexander!

I feel Charlotte's actual love interest is Colbourne. When I started watching this season, I was paying a lot of attention to the writing, to see what each male lead would provide Charlotte as character development. So far Lennox has just provided her with a stake, and a choice. And it was planted to us in Episode One, 'Knowing your husband might at any moment, be shipped across the ocean ... perhaps to never return." And Charlotte excuses herself from the room because his words resonate with her fear to open herself up. Emotionally, Colbourne seems like a better healing companion, and he's provided her the grounds to do it. They are both grieving, and they are both struggling with opening themselves up. That's why I like them more as a couple. I'm not particularly sure how Charlotte perceives him. I do believe she feels attracted to Lennox, but seems to hold an emotional connection to Colbourne because in some way, she relates to him, and the fact that Lennox believes that Colbourne 'stole' something from him, and is making everything so personal above everyone else, especially in this match lol, can start shifting that attraction to fading. Things are not black and white. And at the moment, Charlotte's character development and story beats have been more closely to Colbourne, so he might be the male lead 👌 let me know what you guys think :)
@susanfirth9883
@susanfirth9883 2 года назад
Agree completely, though I feel much more certain that Colbourne is already the male lead. I think they’ve been showing a side of Lennox that is less than desirable for someone like Charlotte. Beyond how I think she is beginning to feel about Colbourne, she loves family above all else, and what you said about Lennox leaving can’t compare to what she’s already beginning to feel for those girls, and how they are feeling about her 🥰🥰

I believe Charlotte's exit in E1 after Lennox's comments about a husband going across the ocean and never returning reminded her of Sidney going across the ocean and not returning. Although he was not her husband in reality; he was her beloved in heart. Allison's stupid response just compounded it. I experience the storyline emphasizing the similarity because she goes to the church upon her exit. Just my take on it. I also don't think she really liked Lennox that much. She was polite as required by the period; but facial expressions prior to the balcony scene indicated she didn't think highly of him. Again my experience. I hope at some point, Alexander told Charlotte what Lennox said at close of archery contest. For me Lennox is an arse! ☺

@@aprilrose6630 I like to consider how conversations might have gone differently if people were better communicators. What if after Mr. Colbourne said, "You are MY governess" and Charlotte responded with "You might pay my wages, but I am not yours to order about," Alex had responded with "The man is a seducer of young women, Miss Heywood. I know of one young lady who ended up dead after he discarded her." @@aprilrose6630 I'm happy to hear from you. I have to tell you about an experience I had last Sunday (not yesterday.) I had earlier seen a rather long post from someone who presumed to explain Sanditon to those of us who were apparently too ignorant to understand. I found one statement she made objectionable when she said Mr. Colbourne had to dismiss Charlotte because he was afraid, she would "submit to him" because he was her employer. I responded that she had some interesting insights, but I believed that Charlotte was not the kind of girl to "submit" and Mr. Colbourne was too honorable to take advantage. In the era of "Me Too" submit has a certain connotation for me. Well, her response was to go off on me (once again very long and comes to me in an email single spaced block probably 8-10 inches long) and says she never said that (I cut and pasted it back to her) and that I must have let my imagination run away with me. Some of the other things she said in follow-up answers was that Mr. Colbourne never loved his wife or he would have gone to check on her sooner, Col. Lennox was not a liar, Mr. Colbourne did steal Lucy from Col. Lennox (I said there was no evidence of that), Mr. Colbourne only went to apologize to Charlotte because Augusta asked him to and not for himself (her evidence was that he was twisting his gold ring), Col. Lennox was saying Mr. Colbourne had never loved his wife when he made the comment "All's fair in love and war. Happily, I've known both and you've known neither" while I said he was implying that Mr. Colbourne's wife never loved him. Then I'd really had enough when she said Mr. Colbourne deserved everything Col. Lennox said to him at the military encampment after Charlotte and Leo left and that Col. Lennox was speaking the truth. I had earlier said we should agree to disagree, but she kept writing. I finally had to tell her that if she thought our poor, heartbroken Mr. Colbourne never loved his wife we would never have a meeting of the minds and I wouldn't be opening or responding to her posts again. I've enjoyed reading all the clever comments other Sanditon fans have made and never thought any comment was "wrong" just someone's opinion. I remember thinking. I wish April Rose would write. I know she'd agree with me and be sympathetic to my trolling trauma. Sorry, this will probably come in your email as a long-single-spaced block of type just like the crazy lady's. My apologies in advance.

I think one of the reasons why she made it the first round "that being lenox round" because she wanted to show what she is capable of, you could see that when she boldly tells lenox that "this isn't my first time using an arrow". And Charlotte has always been like that, whenever she gets a chance to show off her capability, she does. Like with the ball game in season one when she plays against Sidney and the other guys. So her making the arrow the first round wasn't for Lenox but it was for herself. And the reason why she missed during Colbounres turn was because she was feeling used and manipulated. Which she expected last from Colbourne and giving the fact that she fancies and admires him from what she previously observed of his character in the previous episodes. She was in a way shocked that he acted that way towards her, it confused her because in the previous episodes she sensed his character to be better than this but since she still doesn't know him well she thinks that colbourne showed his "true colors" here. But he is better than this, Colbourne was manipulated himself by lenox and pressured by him. We got to remember that this is Colbournes first outing ever since Lucy died so he's very vulnerable and Lenox used that against him. Also I think at first Colbourne gets mad at Charlotte not making his round was because he thought that she only made it the first round because she did it for Lenox. Which she didn't she did for herself. But then later I noticed that Colbourne leaves in anger I bet because he got mad at himself for letting Lenox manipulate him and the reason why he tells Charlotte to stay away from him because he realized that Charlotte was used and manipulated by Lenox as well. So I dont think Coulbourne was mad at Charlotte because he thinks she fancies Lenox more I think he just let out his own anger on himself towards Charlotte because at the same time he doesn't want her to be manipulated by Lenox again. And Charlotte on the other hand thinks that Colbourne is showing his "true colors" and that he's super competitive and aggressive. Which makes her believe Lenox's hopefully false warning about Colbourne. I believe Colbourne is what Charlotte first interpreted from the horse scene. And that later Colbourne will realize that Charlotte wasn't favoring anyone but was simply showing off her amazing capability of archery.
@susansparke3462
@susansparke3462 2 года назад
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Also, Charlotte would have been wise to refuse to take up the bow against her employer and/or to interfere with the competition between the two men because no matter the outcome as we saw, Charlotte is placed in a bad position for her participation. Had she stunk, then Lennox would have made her look foolish, but instead she appeared to favor one man over another, which led to more unpleasantness which could negatively impact her livelihood. I am guilty of wishing I had said or acted differently after the fact when I am caught off guard and this scene with Charlotte being put on the spot is exactly the sort of thing that one agrees to impulsively and under pressure, but immediately regrets the decision and I found it entirely relatable. Poor Charlotte was in a no-win situation here.

Does anyone remember the first scene of the first episode of season one where Charlotte is holding a gun and was def hunting or something? Just like they did here with her being badass at archery, I really hope they somehow will incorporate more of her gun skills in this season and if not then maybe in season 3. If captain Lenox is bad after all he wouldn't want to mess with charlotte after learning about how charlotte is well trained with a gun. Which I bet she is. Here's the link to the a deleted scene from season 1 where charlotte is shown more at her farm home and how she uses the gun. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CmqdyZUmUlM.html

@@susanfirth9883 The reason why both guys dont notice her independence and her own authority is because for one Lenox in general perhaps thinks he has figured her character out and expects her to be fragile (fragile meaning that she needs helper assistance of a man, like society thinks in general) like any other women and also he did at some point say that she reminds him of lucy, which I dont know who she (lucy) was as a person but for now I think she was in a way fragile cause she perhaps was easily charmed by Lenox, which is our theory. Either before or after being married to Colbourne. And plus little by little it's becoming obvious that Lenox has only interest in charlotte because of her beauty and he thinks that he can easily charm her like any other woman he perhaps charmed. In theory it wouldn't make sense for him to marry her because charlotte doesn't have fortune and it would be only pure love that would make him marry her but for now I see no sparks for love. And the way it was easy for him to use charlotte to make colbourne mad was very selfish of him. And plus Charlotte has shown us how she is not easily charmed by suspicious men like in season 1 Edward tried to chat her and she immediately stayed on her guard. So Lenox not knowing this thinks he has his way with her. Which he doesn't. Two, Colbourne if the theory is correct is still not healed from grief and guilt of Lucy, and this garden party was his very first outing since whatever happend with Lucy. So colbourne is vulnerable and plus the whole time he was in shock that Lenox was there and that Lenox was friendly acquainted with Charlotte. Which raffles up his trust towards Charlotte and at the same time makes him concerned for Charlotte if Lenox is what we think he is. Charlotte the person who Colbourne started to admire and a little open up to. Even though I dont really know what happened with Colbourne but I do give him credit for listening to Charlotte and being civil during the party for Augusta, which tells you that Augusta is important to him. And it let's you know about his character that he is willing to do sacrifices for the people he loves. So with all this pressure going inside Colbournes head of course he would of been sidetracked and blind to seeing more of Charlotte's independence and plus Lenox just went too far with his actions and comments. We do know that when Colbounre first met Charlotte he showed us how intrigued and interested he is at Charlotte's independence and mindset of what it means to be a women. When she boldly states her opinion about society and about what it means to be a women and leaves. And he in return gets on his horse and races after her and says she's hired. This REALLY tells you how open he is to her new ways of treating women because if our theory is correct he after all has experienced how fragile women can be and how pressured down by society they can be. But Charlotte the opposite shows how SHE can push down society. Which is a rare thing. Also Charlotte on the other hand is still wounded from losing Sidney and everyone ever since from episode 1 have been pressuring her to settle down even her own friends, the person that most annoyed me was her sister allison. Lady Denam wasn't a surprise by pressuring down Charlotte because she always like that but Allison after all is her family and should support her. But now since the truth is out I wouldn't be surprised if Allison considers to be a spinster as well. But Geogiana and Arthur were very supportive towards Charlotte. So Charlotte's position right now is to protect her independence and freedom from men. And Coulbroune not knowing what Charlotte really went though and his own experience what he went through tries to in his way protect Charlotte which is aggresive to Charlotte because she doesn't really know why he's acting the way he is. So in short sorry for writing a lot, Colbourne and Charlotte both dont know where they are coming from so no wonder why the episode ended in their misunderstanding and lack of knowledge about each other. They both need healing and understanding of both sides of their stories and journey they went through. So when finally they heal each other I bet Colboune will be the one to embrace and bring out (including Charlotte herself) Charlotte's independence and how women should be treated as an individual and not as an object of marriage. Maybe we will get a little bit of it this season but I know it's going to get worse because in order to build up season 3 they need to spice things up a bit but we will see everything unfold in season 3 like the saying goes "everything needs time and there's time for everything".

Yes. That’s what he told Charlotte in the last episode. That Colbourne had stolen Lucy from him and then “destroyed” her. But I think we saw enough of Lennox being devious in this episode to take that with a very large grain of salt 🙄

It’s possible. We don’t know anything about Augusta’s father. Who is he? Why isn’t he raising her? I could be wrong and eating my words next week, but I am more suspicious that it was Lucy who cheated on Colbourne with Lennox. At one point - not in this clip - Lennox makes a comment about having Lucy in his arms. Colbourne’s jealous outburst at the end was problematic. I’ll withhold judgement until the next episode since he was angry after being harassed by Lennox the entire day. He refers to Charlotte as “my governess” twice in the episode rather than the girls’ governess. I could almost imagine him saying “my wife” instead of “my governess.” "You're my wife. I forbid it." Maybe he’s worried about history repeating? Excited for episode 5 for sure!

I honestly think that when Lenox said that "I had both and you had neither of them" I bet he wasn't just meaning the arrows but Lucy and her twin sister, o my goodness could both girls be his daughters??? First Lenox used Lucy twin sister then Lucy herself later. If this is true Man my heart breaks for Colbourne! This makes me fall in love with coulbourne even more especially if he endured all that pain and still tries to go forward and find connection. Perhaps when Colbourne told charlotte that it's best for the girls to not know him, because he's not even their father in the first place?

Oh my heavens Rusian, surely not. After reading your comment I went back and listened to the conversation under the tree again. He said only Augusta wasn't his child, meaning I suppose she was his neice, never said anything about Leonora. But don't suppose he would be spilling dark family secrets so soon to someone he has only just met. It will all come out in the wash as the old saying goes.

Lucy loved Lennox but she couldn’t marry him bc he was just a soldier, so she married Colbourne bc he was wealthy. Colburne loved her but she always loved Lennox. You could draw parallels between what happened to Sidney and Charlotte. It fits with the dialogue and explains why Lennox is so salty. He wasn’t lying when he said Colbourne stole her. Lucy dies, like Sidney. That’s why Colbourne thinks he’s unlovable. Haha! I can’t wait to be wrong but it’s fun to guess anyway. 😊
