Charlotte (Rose Williams) agrees to play for Augusta (Eloise Webb), unaware that the spinet is kept locked at Mr. Colbourne's (Ben Lloyd-Hughes) request -- it was only played by his late wife. (S2:E2)

I quite like the twist the the "household" is in fact just Mrs Wheatly and Colbourne wagering on how long she'll last.

As I re-watch these scenes between them, something that always stands out to me is how he doesn't interrupt her. Sidney would always jump in and tell her she was wrong or talk over her (very defensive). Xander just absorbs what she says and really listens. He has been tethered to the past for so long, and she completely unmoors him in the best possible way.

He absorbs, listens, doesn't interrupt and then ACTS on what she says which is so cute! (Opening the piano to be played again, staying at garden party after she asks him to, spending 'time' with them at picnic etc. 😊🥰🤩

The way he respects her is one of my favorite things about them!! The only exception to this is when he is trying to push her away. He speaks over her and tells her what he wants to have happen instead of letting her choose. I think he does that on purpose because he knows that she will hate him for it. I just adore them so much.
@rachelsmith5479

@@hollijo I think maybe the reason also that he talks over her in the dismissal scene is that he knows how logical and persuasive she is and if he lets her speak, he may be in danger of being swayed from his resolution to let her go. 😭

Another surprise for him: When the going gets tough, she doesn't bail. She already cares about those children, invested in them for the right reasons.

Charlotte silenced Colbourne with her arguments that he knows are only true, no other person has ever had the courage to face him and make him come to his senses for the erroneous way he is treating his daughter and niece, Colbourne listened, understood, recognized the error and sought fixing your attitudes, this is so wonderful.

"Tomorrow, then. Same Time". This is a brilliant episode with wonderful acting all around and especially by 'Augusta'. I love the reflection in the window, around 3.01, of Charlotte walking away - a lovely attention to detail. Also, it appears that Rose Williams is actually playing the spinet herself (and from watching the full episode). I play some piano myself and it's usually blatantly obvious in films when an actor, who doesn't play, 'mimes' playing. Sam, in Casablanca, is a case in point and I wonder that more care isn't taken in such scenes. I've started watching S2 again (after watching each episode twice as they have become available) and there are so many little things to pick up on once you have already seen all episodes - both in facial expressions and dialogue. The whole story has been so carefully crafted and the dialogue has been perfectly written. The whole thing is a work of art.

I couldn't agree more about the rewatch. I'm putting together clips from S1 now and I missed Sidney saying that Lord Babington was a close friend of the Prince Regent. Lady Susan is "very" close to the Prince Regent and that is Tom's greatest wish, that the Prince visit Sanditon -- and we know that Lady Susan will be in S3. I can't wait to see how this all plays out. As you said, Stephen, puzzle pieces that they keep giving us, without the picture on the box 😂

Nice observation of Charlotte's reflection in the window. I've been too much involved at looking at Colbourne to have noticed it. 😄 "Tomorrow, then" or "till tomorrow" is a repeat phrase of Colbourne's. Always looking forward to seeing dear Charlotte again.

I LOVE Augusta. Testing, testing, needling, being mean, trying to hurt Charlotte and get her in trouble...afraid to risk her own heart. So many defense mechanisms. Little by little she begins to trust and open herself to Charlotte's love. Layers, just like her uncle.

I love how she changes too. Charlotte just keeps showing her that she's on her side, she's not the enemy, and that love breaks down Augusta's wall. It's so beautifully done ❤️

I absolutely adore BLH’s and RW’s work, what a delight! But I have to mention Eloise Webb’s work is amazing as well. She was able to portray sadness, grief, vulnerability but also mischief all at the same time and so subtly as well. She is really skilled! Honestly, the whole cast has done great work!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

The amount of emotion in his voice is amazing. There are many ways the scene with the spinet could have been played. He might have come in yelling angrily (like Sidney in S1). But instead there is this heartbreaking softness in his voice when he asks her to stop. He grows more commanding with Augusta and Leanora only to soften again when he asks Charlotte if she wishes to leave. I just can't get over how excellent the acting is.

That's what I said!!! His voice when he asked her to stop was a mix of heartache , sadness, yet gentleness, pleading and almost love/respect as if he'd never want to yell at her/treat her harshly 😊💓...then a bit more deep, loud and stern with Augusta, but not too much, just enough to not sound so sad, but never too harsh with the girls either 😊💓

Yo Leonora's timing though... she just comes tearing through screaming at the top of her lungs and you can see Charlotte thinking 'Lordt... I'm gonna get fired." Lol. Love this scene. It's clear that Colbourne respects her opinion and while he may get defensive, he stays present and listens to her. He's not above seeing admitting his fault even when he's annoyed. I love it. Also I love how he's like Leo can scream and be wild but he draws the line at trousers... until Charlotte says otherwise of course lol.

@@susanfirth9883He is! I was re-watching the governess interview and I was reminded that he did indeed ask her during his rapid fire quizzing 'Play an instrument?' Anyone would've thought from that line of questioning that it would be okay to play the pianoforte, and that he expected her to teach her charges to play, since he wants his girls to 'be accomplished'!

It was hard for me to like Augusta in the beginning. She was so evil to Charlotte with all the spinster insults. However, she does seem rather vulnerable, and I've warmed to her. Especially once she said, "You must never leave us" and encouraged Mr. Colbourne to "Go to her, Uncle." Just in case anyone was curious I thought I'd share what I learned about English currency and what a shilling was worth (the bet Mrs. Wheatley had with Mr. Colbourne over whether Charlotte would last a week.) It was equal to 12 pence (pennies) or one 20th of a pound. Until the 1970's a pound was equal to 240 pence and was not based on 100 like our currency system. Can you believe it? So, I wondered what a quid was - slang for a pound. And a Guinea was equal to one pound and one shilling. (Added later) I just remembered the name of another British currency - the Crown. I looked it up and a crown is worth one quarter of a pound, or five shillings, or 60 pence. Am I the only one who likes to learn odd facts? 😀

After what she overheard last time, I hope Leo will be cured of eavesdropping. What's the old adage? "Eavesdroppers rarely hear good of themselves." In that last scenario this saying was magnified a hundred times. I just knew she would run away.
