Santa Muerte EXPLAINED | Penny Dreadful: City of Angels 

“Santa Muerte” is held in great affection and esteem by her adherents. Her worship has unfortunately become much associated and intertwined with narcotraffickers, but putting that aside (as real as it is), Santa Muerte worship is hardly restricted to the narcogroups, gangs and criminals, though many a prisoner and his/her family appeals to her for intercession in Court cases, etc. She is seen as the approachable deity that the desperately poor can call their own, who “understands” them and their situation, to whom they can appeal. After all, one can’t approach the other beloved Mexican icon, la Virgén de Guadalupe, to petition that one’s married lover leave his wife, or one’s son’s rather-shady, not-quite-legal business succeed. “She’s a battle-axe, like us”, one worshipper explained. They see her as someone who understands their plight on the fringes of society, the conundrum of their daily lives, how the Church can promise them little but a better Afterlife, and sets the canonized saints, in practice if not in theory, “beyond [their] reach” as the wretched, sinful and continuing to live in sin (more often an effect of hardscrabble lives in dire poverty with precious few options). She’s a “saint” with whom they can “do business”, whom they address by a plethora of affectionate nicknames, who appreciates a cloud of tobacco or marijuana smoke, a cigarette, a fat blunt or a shot of tequila placed on her altar along with the more traditional religious altar decorations of flowers and rosary beads. But, she’ll accept a pristine glass of water; as a skeleton, she’s perpetually “thirsty” and clean water in areas where typhoid, cholera and dysentery are still issues, is a valid, “worthy”, offering (though that water needs to be kept fresh and its container cleaned; to allow it to become dusty, dirty or evaporate is to invite offense and trouble. One would not expect an honoured guest, must less a powerful “friend” to “drink” from such an offering.) But she’s very serious; unkept vows and disrespect are dealt with harshly. She’ll lend an ear to any petition, but it’s still her choice whether or not to accept it, and she expects a “return”, though *not* in the way people fearfully imagine; she’s not the Aztec sun god Huitzilopochtli, with his fire-breathing monster serpent, Xiuhcoatl. It appears her expectations are usually more mundane; such as the construction of an altar or perhaps even a temple, the keeping of her statue and devotional items, to proselytize and spread “the word” (though in a “local” manner; not like traveling Christian missionaries). Though she has adherents of every skin tone and socio-economic status, her core adherents are the poor and needy. Her attributed lack of condescension, which very many of her adherents feel from society and the Church, whether real, inferred, supposed, imagined or a combination, is an enormous draw for this “saint” whom, as the personification of Death, comes for the mighty and the lowly equally. While I’m certainly not a Santa Muerte devotée, I would think adherents would see the “Penny Dreadful” depiction as disrespectful, maybe even sacrilegious. The whole point is, they feel Santa Muerte *does* care for the living; she cares when no one else does, when the canonized saints and the Virgin would be unapproachable or turn away. That’s the key to her popularity, what sparks the spread of devotion to her, how people can, and do, consider themselves both devout Catholics *and* devotées of Santa Muerte even as the Catholic Church and the Vatican have condemned her and her worship, deemed her an infectious evil and even satanic.

Well the Catholic Church has no real say in people's beliefs, it's well known that Catholicism used synchronicity to absorb local traditions in the conversion process to Christianity Catholic Flavor.

She is a goddess of death and her because she she works with the crossroads of the afterlife, and she Guide souls to the heaven or underworld

Its really good but not sure why they had to put penny dreadful in the title think this got fans of the original pissed. Understandable because filmed completely differently.

Watching it now .. notsure if i like it yet .

According to my Guardian Angel, I have a Spirit of DEATH. Why? Because I did a 6 minutes Last Kisses, 6 Minutes last Prayer and 6 minutes Last Breathed, and Last Heartbeat. All " Unintentionally", I did not know, No idea at all. All I did is the Name of Love!

This series is terrible next to the original penny dreadful series. Far to slow nowhere near written as good. Sorry I found it boring. Was a hard watch from the original.

Show was boring,watched it only to learn more about Santa Meuerte

The only interesting, fascinating, and just beautiful character in an otherwise awful, boring and underwhelming show.

I just don't like the Ugly Image, because I'm a very Beautiful Woman and don't like Ugly Faces, Don't like Dump and Stupid, like very Stupid People, and Don't like Bloody Face.

This show is boring and lame,, nothing like the first show..if your a daily soap opera watcher. Then u might like.if u like scifi movies, you will think stupid.
