TheFrogsPond the abridged series has gone against the real show’s canon repeated, and for the betterment of the story, but in actual SAO you could still be killed in a safe zone as long as you’re in a duel.

@stymphalian bird the duels could be done in three modes. First strike, one till half your hp gauge is depleted and one where your entire health bar is depleted.

You see, I knew it was called Entry of Gladiators, but I didn't quite catch the subtle joke at play here. My brain simply went "ha ha circus music clown show". Honestly goes to show there's always more to these scenes than meets the eye. Side note: while I was typing this I started to hear Kirito reading it out loud, which is both hilarious, AND HIGHLY DISTRUBING.

Even better funfact: "Entry of the Gladiators" only _starts_ with the "Clown Music"... After that starting bar, it actually gets pretty epic.

Add on that, as we learn later, it makes sense that Kayaba would just use a song that sounds like it should be played during a duel during development, without actually listening to it.

He was an asshole who tricked Asuna and the entire guild only for Kirito to find out he was with laughing coffin In the abridged however people can’t help but to mercilessly pity how pathetic he is and the abridged kept his original creepy side probably multiplying it by a ton with that voice

Is it? Fool's guard is a longsword stance and as such used with a two handed weapon in a completely different position. Looks like a variation of the fencing stance to me with the posture and the blade intentionally lowered. The logic is similar, appearing to be defenseless in order to catch the opponent off-guard but Kirito doesn't reproduce a fool's guard. That being said I'd be amused to know where did he learn that. AFAIK he only has Kendo experience in actual swordsmanship yet he uses one handed swords and even prefers to dual wield. This is probably the furthest you can get from kendo before picking up a bow and practicing archery.

ah thank you for the clarification, I have seen the fool's guard used with a one handed sword but it appears I need to look into this further. That being said though considering how the duel went the use of said guard would've been perfect for the scene

Fool's guard is bad for diagonal cuts so I'd disagree. There are other low guards that accomplish a similar purpose but are more fit for an opener. Example could be the one shown on the scene. And as we saw Kirito basically did a diagonal cut at Kuradeel's sword to cut it apart as he was passing by. While biomechanically the sequence is still head scratching it'd have been even weirder from a fool's guard. It also worths noting that fool's guard is so well-known that stances/guards of similar positioning are often mistaken for it. Even just for longswords there's the Full Iron Gate, Middle Iron Gate (arguably the same as fool's guard), Boar's Tooth and perhaps more that get often mixed up with Alber.
