I am from Pedorido, Portugal. My father and both of my grandparents worked in the mines, which closed in 1991. There were 5 of those locomotives, and one of tem is still on display on the town hall, although not working. João Moutinho also lives here and his house is right where the mines used to be.

Cute little steamer, I love steam locomotives, my all-time favorite is the Union Pacific Big Boy 4-88-4 articulated, designed for use hauling freight over the Rocky Mountains in the mid-west here in the USA. Diesel-electric locos are easier to maintain and run, but there's nothing like the sound of steamer coming at you.

Koppels are such clean looking things. Seems like you had a lot of fun with this one! The Germans really were clever about the ergonomics of this thing with that slick toolbox, that firedoor, and some very well laid out controls. That pump is really cool! It's like someone has attached a model engine under the locomotive! Love your channel for showing us all these interesting features that most people wouldn't really notice or point out in great detail.

Just discovered your videos a few days ago. I am hooked. Love all things railroading. In this video you mentioned the center driver is flangeless. In the states we refer to this type of driver as "blind".

This loco felt somewhat familiar to me. It turns out that a heritage railway I used to visit very often as a child (Stoomtrein Katwijk Leiden, previously known as Het Smalspoor Museum) also runs some O&K locos! It’s nice to know that there are more engines like the ones from my childhood running on lines across the world

Thank you for the video. Those mines are located in the village were I was born and lived for 32 years. My grandfather worked with the locomotives. It means a lot for us.

Not many Steam locos from the US are capable of visiting the UK because of loading gauges and stuff, but a Maine 2 footer could probably, do it. Seeing this engine made me think of that.

Great video lawrie. I was wondering , do you know about the great cockcrow railway? It's a 7.25 inch gauge rapresentation if a main line railway. It's situated near chertsy (in Surrey ) and we open to the public every Sunday from 13.00 to 16.30. The railway closes for maintenance work after Halloween and reopens in may. We mostly run live steam locomotive but we also have some diesels ( which are actually electric except the class 55 deltic which is powered by a petrol engine.) I'm a volunteer there so if you came to visit we'll might meet 😀

I'm not a big fan of trains but steam engines are just beautiful and satisfying to see in action, I am disappointed that the whistle couldn't be blown, amazing pieces of machinery

so lovly, I'm working at a steam train museum here in germany and we drive standard gauge engines. Atm we only have one working engine, but it's a lovly one. And ofc we are allowed to whistle, we're actually required to do so per law XD

That's the kind of loco i would happily roll onto a trailer and drive of with it! Ive seen some extremely tiny (i forget the gauge to be honest,it was tiny and under 2 foot im pretty sure) versions of these maybe 30% the size of this one in some pictures many moons ago, the one at the time was plinthed(i think some place in Tasmania, no not "Wee Georgie Wood" which is a smallish once plinthed now running loco over there ) but i believe ended up restored.Maybe one day (when fully tooled up, suitable place to do it and retired!) I will build something around this size,staring a bit smaller first though ;)

Lovely little loco Lawrie even though I must admit I prefer standard gauge but that is my personal preference, I would love to have a go in a Class 37 diesel!!!!!

I live nearby and it’s such a nice collection there, you should do a video on the two ploughing engines they have there apparently they have a left hand and right hand engine and that’s extremely rare because when they were scrapping the engines they started on the line of right hand engines before they started being saved so there’s a load of left hand and hardly any right hand left and is rare to find a pair

Ever thought about doing an lmm episode on river/narrow boats? Maybe you could organise something with channels like cursing the cut. They are quite interesting too.

I've seen it on other O&K locos, the little holes either side on each cylinder. Not the drain cocks, but the hole where the steam comes out sideways on every chuff, wondered what it was for seeing as its wasting steam?

I volunteer at a museum railway in sweden and I work as a ticket collector or an extra conductor. At our railway we have four Orenstein och koppel (O&K) and I got to drive one of them wich was locomotive nr 10 Avesta 0,6,0..

Have you ever thought of looking at the 2ft 3inch gauge engines on the Corris Railway?

My museum has quite an interesting little narrow gauge locomotive. Ex-Defiance Coal Company N°1, a 1921 HK Porter 0-4-0 built to 40-inch narrow gauge, it originally ran on a line roughly 1½ miles from the DCC's two mines to the coal tipple, located in Mentmore, New Mexico. After the mine shut down, a doctor from upstate New York bought it and displayed it at the legendary Rail City, the first operating steam railway museum in the United States. After the doctor passed away, the engine traded hands again, and I believe it was then owned by Mr. Roy Dunwell, whom the engine is named after now. Mr. Dunwell restored the engine to operational condition, and built a special flatbed truck trailer with rollers, so the engine can be fired up and run. It now is owned by the Railroad Museum of Long Island, of which I am a member, and as of this year, it's back to operation once again. I'm officially part of the Steam Team, and as such, I get to operate the little engine when we fire it up. Those Orenstein&Koppel locomotives are quite common on 2ft/600 mm gauge all around the world. The works produced thousands of them from 10-70 HP size. Unfortunatly this one was quite a lot modified to British style features, that spoil the design a bit. The original lever hand brake is much better and faster to use, the new boiler has a different design with this strange long water gauge glasses and the kind of small aditional dome in the cab. Original fitted with 2 Strube suction injectors and swivel windows in the cab. The 2-step valve regulator seems to have some issue, maybe the stoke of the small relief valve is too big, so the main valve starts "jumping". The safety valves are not orginal, but from a ARN. JUNG built loco. Nevertheless it is a great video, well done Lawrie!

it's so obvious you absolutely love your loco hobby. to be honest, i would too. i love machines, i always have. i've been working on them since i could hold a wrench. i get along better with them than most people. you always know where you stand with a mechanical contraption. people, not so much. for the most part, i still barely understand people. i can tell you what every part of an engine is, and does, but i haven't the foggiest notion why the average human does what they do, other than because. sorry, it's been a week of people driving me bonkers here.

On the subject of 2ft gauge Is there any chance of a “Lawrie goes loco” on the Welsh Highland Railway NGG16 Garratts?

I've got a shunter engine myself. An upsized Hudswell Clarke Diesel Mechanical 0-8-8-0 Shunter, 26 cylinder with 0.7223 liter for each cylinder.

How much difficulty did they have locating those awful tampered stay bolts? And bugger the neighbors for complaining about the whistle. 😂

Honestly, I don't really call them "design flaws" I prefer to call them "features", because they don't really take away from the train, more so add to it! That's one of the reasons I like engines like Ming, because they have their own little quirks and features, and they just make Ming who she is.

The escalators in the mall local to me are made by O&K

In fact locomotives nr 10 Avesta looks rather like Sao domingos your driving here in this video exept Avesta does not have the modified cab and I think Avesta is a bit smaller.

If I could have a 2 foot gauge steam engine then it would be one of those.

There should be a law about noise... Before you buy your house next to a railway, workshop, pub, school, airport. You should tick a box saying "yes I'm aware there is noise"... Rather than people moving in then complaining.

Not allowed to whistle.? I thought it was a necessity in law that if a right of way crossed the line at track level to give a warning of your approach. If someone is not paying attention (& is rather deaf) a sharp pull on the whistle would save a potentially very gruesome accident.

In spite of a few areas that I would like restored, it is a beautiful locomotive! She's fit for the Skarloey Railway on Sodor! Also, your fireman is named James! Just like a rather arrogant engine we all know!
