I have a new found respect for British narrow gauge and tiny industrial engines because of your channel. Growing up in the colonies these have always been my favorite especially the Maine two footers or industrial locomotives. I never knew there was a Plymouth in the UK!

As much as i love the narrow gauge steam engines that "Galloping Goose" really caught my eye for its oddity. It is like a very British take on the American Galloping geese that ran on Rio Grande. Also cool to see how you shut down a steam engine at the end of the day.

Always a good day at statfold what ever the weather! I do however wished they stopped one of the lines heading down to the loop. (Possibly the high line) Like they used too. It made getting each loco for haulage a lot easier! Wastes to much time getting stuck around the ballon or on the passing loop. Put on the plus side of that it does get my steps up between Statfold jnc and oak tree 😂

This time we didnt even get to see it moving- Im guessing it wasnt broken because Im certain I saw steam drifting up out of it... Such a unipue loco & with a HUGE story behind it along with being the first of a loco type it would be perfect for one of your steam-it-up & natter about it sessions that we all love... Please Lawrie, give us some Garratt content from ol' K1, pleeeeease....

Bit of a technical question, but were these engines fitted with brick arches to begin with? A prohibition on firing on the move is a new one on me, then again I was always told not to hang around with the firedoor to protect the sheets and the flues from cold air rushing in.
@lmm
@lmm Год назад
The K1 may have/still have, but it's technically not part of the collection, and I've not climbed on it. Most of the engines - smaller especially were meant for single man operation, so you built your fire and just got on with whatever was needed, pause, rebuild, continue. So they didn't have one. Unless there's a brick arch I've always not opened the doors if the engine is working, having a quick check and fire when you're costing is fine. I guess by doing this it just ensures no working with the doors open, especially things like the quarries with tiny boxes!

looks like theres more room on there than on agecroft, can swing a shovel!
@KPen3750
@KPen3750 Год назад
Why aren't the locos fitted with a brick arch? is that just a consequence of industrial types that they would only be going about an industry yard with access to coal? or some other reason? And did they have to remove the K1's brickarch, if it even had one to begin with

What was the reason for the motion of the French Corpet locomotive. Apart from the cylinders being set high. I assume an industrial locomotive of whatever origin would have all the moving parts set as low as possible so it oscillated less on temporary track. I assume the name of the Fowler locomotive is some kind of joke, since the locomotive came from a Cane Sugar plantation in South Africa. It looks like the chimney is 'QD' without disturbing the alignment with the blast-pipe. The locomotive can burn oil or coal at the beginning of the milling campaign but burn dried cane waste (bagasse) by fitting a spark-arresting chimney in place of the stove-pipe.
@lmm
@lmm Год назад
I think the design for the Corpet was to keep the cylinders away from low down obstructions. I have no idea on the origins of the Fowler name I'm afraid.
@hugos5114
@hugos5114 3 месяца назад
Hi! the Corpet-Brown design was specifically built for public works locomotives, so they were expected to run on pretty much terrible trackage with a lot of obstacles, as well as dirt and grime that would reach the cylinders easier if they were not set that high.

@TheModellersMess Год назад
@@lmm when you went to Whitwell and Reepham railway with the Wickham trolley, how did you organise to be a driver for those two days?
@TheHatMusic
@TheHatMusic Год назад
@@TheModellersMess For most railways, the process is simply to join up as a volunteer. All railways are a little different, but in general, you will have to demonstrate your skill set and be assessed by the senior staff there in charge of the relevant department. So, to become a driver if you already have plenty of driving experience, you would spend time on the loco as a cleaner to prove you understand the machine (usually they can tell by how comfortable you are on the loco), then do some turns firing, then driving. Once they are satisfied that you know what you're doing, they will give you the chance to be tested. There are also tests to cover your knowledge of the working rules of the line. Although Lawrie is pretty well known, he still has to go through the same process as other crew, however as with all experienced crew, it's a question of demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of how to handle a train and how well you understand the operating practices. If you don't need to learn it from scratch, you will progress faster but it's always worth keeping in mind that you only get that understanding by doing it, over and over again until it becomes second nature.
