Sasuke isn't a character that speaks his mind often and we rarely get a peek at what he's thinking. To understand the process his mind went through the series you gotta remember the themes that surround his character. Sasuke was always fixated on loss, he purposefully puts other away, so he doesn't fill the hole of his family in his heart and stays focused on the objective to bring closure to his pain, this way he also cannot lose anyone else. He doesn't believe he can share that pain with others, because only those who went through the same pain can understand each other, to him, the hole is his heart cannot be filled. And at the end of the original series, Naruto couldn't bring Sasuke back not because he wasn't strong enough, but because he failed to understand him. Through the course of the original series, he gradually started to forget his objective and saw to see the rest of team 7 as his family, but when Itachi reappeared it reminded him of the pain of his loss, and reignited his focus. Once he learned the truth, he wanted to destroy the leaf for his and Itachi's loss, but when he speaks with Itachi again, he doesn't understand how he was still proud to be a leaf shinobi, and what would make someone sacrifice what's more important than anything, their family, to preserve those unrelated to them. From Hashirama, Sasuke learns the chain of cause and consequence that led things to where they are, and sees the material historical process that led to everything in his life, from those that shaped that history. From that conversation onwards, what shapes his objective is no longer Itachi, but the ideology that shaped the world which both him and Itachi are a product of. He then decides to become hokage, but the hokage see everyone in the village as their family. But is that what Sasuke wants, to fill the hole in his heart with the collective? Does he think the reality that such ideology built is good? Is it worth the sacrifices to achieve it? Itachi believed that yes it is, Madara doesn't seem to think so, what does Sasuke think?

Sasuke's character to me is like what is being a Teenager. DO you know that teenager feelling of not really knowing what you are, or who you are, or what clique you belong to, so you go through an EMO phase or a hard music or a pop phase, kinda trying to fit in? I feel Sasuke's entire character is an allegory about that. Trying to fit into some clique to find out what or who he is. And at the teenager age you are so easy to have a mind change about your life. Sasuke talked to Orochimaru and followed his way, talked to Tobi after killing Itachi, changed again, talked to Hashirama, changed again.

About the points that ya'll made in the end, the big diference between Madara and Sasuke is that Madara was raised in war and for more than half of his life he only saw war. Sasuke was raised in a "better" era, besides the trauma that he went trough.

When Sasuke says he wants to be Hokage he means by any means even if he have to kill anyone in his way to take that power. He is thinking the end justify the means as long as he is the one making the rules. When Naruto says he wants to be Hokage its to be accepted by everyone as a leader or to be chosen as one through his actions and good deeds. A positive role model regardless of what difficult choices he may have to make.

I think Sasuke's end motivation came from both talking to his brother and the 1st. The hate he had for the leaf was lessened after he found out the truth and that Itachi did what he did out of love for the village. And after he talked to the 1st he learned about the systemic racism against the Uchiha. And that because the leaf was formed from a feud that it was always going to end the way it did unless a Uchiha held actual power and status.
