One of the big uses of power storage I am using is for a restart power source. You make sure you have enough power reserves to run all the machines need to get just your power plant running. I.E. miners and water extractors for coal; oil pumps, refineries etc for fuel plants, etc. Once fully charged use a switch to disconnect it, also make sure you have a switch to disconnect the power plant from the rest of your factories. This way if somehow your plant backs up and you drain all your other batteries you can get your plant up and running again. The key is to keep it disconnected once charged so you don’t drain your reserves if the plant goes down. Once down you disconnect from the other factories ( so you are not wasting your reserve power), then connect your backup power. If you sized it correctly you should have enough time to get your power plant back up and running, then recharge your backup, disconnect your backup, then reconnect your factories. It can literally save you hours on restarting a turbo fuel power plant that goes dry from missing a 1 meter belt connection.

the thing is you can get the same thing by just setting a fuse station. when you blow a fuse you can just run down disconnect your factory and restart your powers with what's left in the tank. and you can give your self more time by building in a buffer to your power station. ie say you have coal power and the node could power 8 plants instead run 7 plants then connect storage contains to the line before the coal is fed into the station same with water but make sure its above the factory so that its gravity feed congrats you dont need to kick start your station

An interesting thing about Biomass Burners now is that they don't use *any* fuel if your power needs on the circuit are met by your other power plants. Which makes them an excellent emergency backup. Especially if, like me, you obsessively pick up leaves whenever you're running around because you want the ground to be nice and tidy. :-) Personally, I'm working on dividing my power grid into sections based on categories. The most important of those is for fuel... everything needed to run my generators of all types is going on its own circuit, which I plan to power entirely with Geothermal (or anything else in the future that doesn't need any fuel itself).
@steeljawX
@steeljawX 3 года назад
This is true. They are a great backup once you get automated power up and going, but I've had my power fluctuate due to poor management. Besides having the new power storage cells, I've got all my old biomass burners still hooked up and I've kept them stocked full. I'll occasionally check back with them and out of the 200 solid bio fuel you can stick in them after about 3 hours IRL of tinkering around trying to get coal and fuel power stable, there's maybe 196-197 still in there. So I think that any drop in power kicks them in to production for a split moment and that will slowly deplete the fuel in them But they are something worth having both on your main power line to just fill in the gaps you're not aware of and also on your backup power line because they will just sit there fully fueled until they're connected. They can't fill the power storage cells, so they, in a sense, are cheap 40mw power cells within themselves.
@FredRated1967
@FredRated1967 3 года назад
This is exactly what I have done. Once I unlocked and setup my first coal power plant, I noticed that my biofuel burners were not burning their fuel. So I left them be, built the second coal power area, then the first oil area with fuel generators, then a second. Then I started putting batteries in each area, combined I now have a nice buffer with biogenerators and above that, the batteries. But, I like to keep ahead of things and now build fuel generators as needed.

Let's face it, if you have to run to the switch every time power goes down, you might as well just go back to the cable cutting method since it's functionally equivalent. They really need to provide a way to interact with switches at a distance to truly make them useful. Satisfactory is also starting to have a number of cases where a circuit network, a little bit like the one you have in Factorio, could prove useful.

The main issue with this is that you end up with a lot of wires running parallel, but I've found that it can look very pretty if you use the beams introduced in update 5 as a power "bus" with lots of wires running along it like real world setups

Unless coffee stain are planning on changing resources to finite, the power generator changes aren't really that much of a big deal. Power might be lost but if the resources being used to make it is infinite then you're not really losing anything from going mad building powerplants and having a vast excess before doing a construction run that would otherwise flatline a factory. Am kind of hoping they add a pop up notice similar to the MAM one to let you know when the batteries are actually being used.

You can also make an AND gate by linking two switches in series. Also you don’t need a third switch for the OR gate, just merge them into a single connection. To make more complex logical circuits (I.e a 4 bit computer) all that would be needed is a transistor type switch and a method to store a bit of memory. A single switch of this type would function as an AND gate, allowing you to build all other logic gates with some spicy spaghetti. From there all that would be needed is an APU, a memory aray, a few busses, and some good old fashion manually input assembly

Confirms my suspicion; they are load switches rather than power switches. Power switches don't switch off multiple generators at the same time. The current major problem is producing extreme power excesses. It takes longer to gather resources and build 100 power storages than for them to fully charge. Pre-update 4: a 100% guaranteed grid demanded the coal capacity >> consumption, and the generators would then match the production to the consumption. It allowed to suddenly build enormous projects far away from main base without destroying the grid which would disable my transportation (hyper tubes). Any excess in coal usage would be diverted to produce steel. Building a project would limit the steel production (a bit), but allowed the generators to drain a little extra coal. This system worked perfectly. Never had a grid failure since tier 3. Now... the coal generators produce full power which completely drain my steel production. I now produce 4 times the amount of energy that I consume. I manually switched off half of all coal generators, which is a sad and time-consuming task but I still produce excess power and have 300 fully charged power storages. I was so happy with the sophisticated production matches consumption, that I couldn't imagine they would ever delete that from a game.
@bobafettjr85
@bobafettjr85 3 года назад
I think they wanted it to be simpler for the math. If you know you have X amount of coal being used constantly then you don't have to worry about excess or shortages. I struggled a lot with my power grid tripping before update 4. After update 4 my factory was unusable due to the new power balancing. So I started over. In my new factory I had one single power failure and that was with biomass burners running out of fuel. Because I could build my power factory once and then I knew it was getting fuel and I never had to touch it again. Although I can see the appeal of having it use what it needs. Perhaps they could integrate that aspect into difficulty modes. Such as "easy power" and "complex power."
@jaimy_games
@jaimy_games 3 года назад
@@bobafettjr85 I can understand your point. However excess solid resources is never really a problem, because you don't waste any of it. Pre-update 4, the coal usage would be 1-15 coal per minute. Any excess coal would either be stored or redirected to increased steel production. In the case you would still have an excess of coal, you miner just falls idle (lowering your energy demand). Now you use 15 coal regardless of any demand, which produces an excess of power which is not so easily stored and also creating shortages on steel production, making those factories idle, lower your energy demand, creating an even bigger energy waste difference. The local math maybe became simpler but the global calculations have become very complex; how many coal generators must be manually switched off so they don't take the 15 coal per minute, in order for that coal to be used in powder and steel production, but also make sure the remaining coal generators generate enough power to power these extra factories who use redirected coal?? In the old system, eventually they balanced each other out automatically. Now I had to set up an EXCEL sheet to find out the optimal amount and I still have to add a few power storages every few weeks to deal with the slight energy excess.
@bobafettjr85
@bobafettjr85 3 года назад
@@jaimy_gamesI get what you're saying. But for me personally it's simpler because I don't turn off my generators. I just let the excess power burn. I just dedicate whole coal to power. And my other needs such as steel end up being filled from other nodes.

if your power already broke down you're running around fixing it anyway, if you have to manually engage your backup power that's an extra step of work just to keep your factory running a few minutes longer if your power is majorly broken down that's the real issue I think batteries could be used as a buffer for expansion, or if you have extremely fluctuating power and don't want to set up additional power facilities at the time instead of batteries you could also just store water and coal/fuel for extra generators

A big use I don't see mentioned for power storage is when pulling a power line from a train station; I basically pair every train station with a power storage so any work done on the rails network won't shutdown my production lines pulling power from the rails.
