These tv specials were a must see for any kid and they kept making them for a long time. One memorable one from the 1980's was hosted by Roddy Piper. It's too bad these kind of things can't be made anymore.

Josh, your dad was a genius, and he means so much to those of us who grew up at that time. His sketches were great, and I still can't eat nacho cheese Doritos without picturing him. He was (and is still since you have made his videos available) a true icon. Thanks for sharing this.

Oh. My. God. I must have this! I remember seeing Rick on Sonny & Cher, and then a year later watching this and faithfully watching Mission: Magic every week. I now have it on DVD (along w/ most iof those other shows previewed), and at age 45, I still have my Saturday morning magic, along w/ a bowl of sugar coated goodness every week! Thanks so much for posting this!!

WTF did I just see Chuck Woolery as Superman and Rick Springfield busting out an acoustic bomb of a song set to early 1970's era "Yellow Submarine inspired" graphic animation?!! Haha this was fantastic. This showed how excited we got as kids for the new Saturday morning lineups that they had a primetime preview show to get us all even more pumped up! Thanks for finding this it's totally awesome!

Hey Josh: I was able to tell your dad how much I enjoyed his & Jack's comedy as a kid when I worked with him on Days of our Lives in the early 90s. We ate lunch together in the NBC commissary a few times too. That meant more to me than working on the soap. Years later I saw him on the picket line during the 2000 SAG strike. Avery was a true talent and genuine great guy! I'm going to watch every one of the videos you've shared. Thank you.

Thanks Josh Schreiber for sharing this video. I remember when the Big Three tv networks still produced animation, and Saturday Morning Cartoons were a big event. Now, there are 24 hour cartoon cable channels, and websites that offer cartoon instantly at a mouse click. I remember when these Sneak Peaks were events I anticipated to see the next season of shows. I feel nostalgia for that era even though it was still in the middle of the dreaded Cold War. Avery Schreiber was a funny, talented man.

This is truly a classic item! a Saturday morning preview from Fall 1973,when most of the cartoon shows that Fall were mostly based on classic TV series, which was very, very rare! this ABC-TV sneak peak special, though edited, saw the debut of "SUPER FRIENDS" (1973-1986) "LASSIE'S RESCUE RANGERS","MISSION:MAGIC",and "GOOBER AND THE GHOST CHASERS",that featured animated guest appearances by some of "THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY" cast, one year before CBS's "PARTRIDGE FAMILY 2200 A.D." in Fall 1974,,and of course,"The SATURDAY SUPERSTAR MOVIE" second season opener,"LOST IN SPACE",which was recently released on the "LOST IN SPACE" BluRay set. but given the appearance of Jack Burns and Avery Schreiber,it is pretty interesting, especially since NBC used the two of these guys for their "Two In a Taxi" Fall 1966 sneak peak-pretty classic stuff,,but then,so was Saturday morning TV,back when the cartoon studios were in full bloom-not to mention seeing Batman and Superman together for the first time,in an TV special, some 45 years before their soon to be released "BATMAN V SUPERMAN:Dawn Of Justice" movie-an amazing bit of trivia!

I was a child of the 80's and I remember these "Sneak Peak" things, too. Saturday Morning used to be awesome. Sometimes certain innovations in Cable TV suck the wonder out of things. No more Saturday Morning TV and the quality of News journalism is crap. I'm not one to fall into the "Old dork who laments the new generation/new technology schtick" but some things I just miss. "A 'Smurfs', a bowl of 'S'mores Crunch' & me". I miss those days...they had a certain...(Aussie Rick voice) "MAGIC".

This is very, very RARE!! it was aired on Sept.7th,1973 on ABC,one day before all three of the networks at that time, aired their cartoons on Sept 8,1973-and ABC began its line-up with the debut of "SUPER FRIENDS",which went-on to run, until 1985,along with "LASSIE'S RESCUE RANGERS","MISSION MAGIC",and the second season primiere of "THE SATURDAY SUPERSTAR MOVIE" opener,"LOST IN SPACE",which of course was based on Irwin Allen's TV series-this was a great period for Weekend TV!

The bit with the kid getting a glass of water gave me a chuckle. I mean, even if a person holds still, someone's bound to notice....unless the boy was assuming that bugs was a throw-rug and Rick was a cool new statue. Round little guy comes out in feetie pajamas...the kid just looks funny. I start riffing like the guys from MST3K: "*oogh* Gonna get water...thirsty...lights on...hi, Chuck Woolery in a Superman outfit...Lassie......I'll just step over Bugs Bunny here...Eeyup....tall pretty guy in white with invisible dog...oh well...water...hi, Batman....I saw nothing, just half asleep & getting water....*gulp gulp* here's the glass, Uncle....goodnight!"

Yes How I recall first seeing this on a Black and White TV on A Friday night in September of 1973.Yes It's also very interesting to both see and hear Rick Springfield here both before he was famous and lost his foreign accent and to top it off was even the star of that old time cartoon of Mission Magic of which I didn't get to see because it didn't play on my own local channel.Too bad that 2nd half of this is not available here on RU-vid.I hope that it will be sooner or later too ASAP & Truly.

Another example of very RARE material from ABC's Saturday Morning TV line-up from Fall 1973 as Jack Burns & Avery Schreiber introduce ABC's cartoon line-up on Friday, September 7, 1973. Burns & Schreiber previously hosted NBC's Fall 1966 TV preview, "Two In A Taxi", so seeing these two guys usher in the cartoons for Fall 1973 on ABC was historic, given that all the Saturday morning cartoons that were launched by the TV networks in Fall 1973 were all spinoffs of popular live-action shows of the 60s, as exampled with NBC's "STAR TREK" from Filmation Associates and Roddenberry's Norway Productions banner, and "LASSIE'S RESCUE RANGERS", based on ABC's SATURDAY SUPERSTAR MOVIE" segment, "Lassie And The Spirit Of Thunder Mountain" in Fall 1972, and the return of the Super Heroes since their cancelation in 1969, as ABC debuted "SUPER FRIENDS", from the ratings success of "Batman & Robin" s guest appearance on CBS's "THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MOVIES" in Fall 1972, and "Cindy's Super Friend" segment from "THE BRADY KIDS" also in Fall 1972, but in the case of "SUPER FRIENDS" first TV season (1973-74) ABC had hired Child Psychologist Haim Ginnott as a consultant, so that the actions of the Super Friends were not violent like the previous Filmation cartoons on CBS in the late 1960s that resulted in parental backlash which led to their removal from the Saturday morning schedules by 1969.

I have always remembered this special. Used to love the Friday night previews of Saturday morning cartoon. Absolute angst trying to watch two at the same time, and then complained if one aired a couple of weeks or a month before the new cartoons. They were supposed to air the night before the cartoons premiered, I thought. LOL! While I remember this, where the kid was supposed to be asleep and all the cartoons visited, mainly remembered Rick Springfield coming in with Goober on the stiff leash with the attached hat. Thought that was so corny. I didn't remember it being Burns and Schrieber. Couldn't recall who the celebrities were. And don't recall Yogi and Bugs appearing like that either. I guess costumes just didn't register with me. I do remember Lassie appearing like that. Don't remember Superman or Batman appearing like that either. Chuck Woolery and Jack Burns all but sound the same. I remember that kid walking thru to get a glass of water and all the characters stopped moving like that. I remember him stepping over someone like he did Bugs, but again, didn't remember Bugs or Yogi (or Superman and Batman) being in it at all.

I do not recall seeing this Sneak Peek show, supposedly on Fri. nights. Then again, my parents & I would either go out for dinner & go shopping afterwards or stay home and watch the hour-long action dramas that were on Fridays: Incredible Hulk was one-that was around 77-78 and the $6million man & then the Bionic woman and other cop/crime/action type stuff. Or the parents might have a party on Fri. & when I woke up at 6am on Sat. I'd see what kind of food was left over and eat that for breakfast - plus, a bowl of cereal, if the party food didn't fill me up! Then, I'd settle in & watch Scooby-Doo, which I think, started at 7am, maybe showing again at a later-in-the-am time and there was Captain Caveman, That Yogi Bear show, which I dug for the Snagglepuss & Huckleberry Hound. And there were more too, like Space Ghost, etc, but it's been so long, I just can't remember them all. But I do recall the live action shows they'd have on Sat AMs too - like the Captain Marvel ("Shazam!")/ Isis show, where they'd have a 15 min. episode of Shazam & one of Isis - a female superhero, named after the Egyptian goddess. if I recall, there was something "Egyptian" about Isis. She had this white jump suit as her uniform and dark brown hair, done up in a bun. But I don't remember a single storyline of either one's show. Also - the Bay City Rollers had a show, as part of the Krofft Superstar Hour, wherein they'd mix it up w/a bunch of various characters from individual Krofft shows, like Lidsville, Puffnstuff (think: "Puffin' Stuff") and Haunted Hotel, Lost Island, Dr. Shrinker and more. And I also used to love watching Land of the Lost too. Most of the other Krofft shows would come on at different times, except for the Saturday Morning Superstar Hour. They'd do a bunch of sketches, etc and then the Bay City Rollers would "perform" (a la 'Lip-synching') a song. See what I mean - w/only 3 networks back then and before cable, there was surprisingly good variety on Sat. mornings.

Comedic Team Jack Burns & Avery Schreiber did their famous 'Human Computer skit' , shown here from (1:40 - 1:50), during a year a 1972 or 1973 live TV Special filmed at Canoga Park, CA. or Buena Parks's, CA. "Japanese Village Deer Park", an amusement park that lasted from the late 1960's to late 1976'. My family visited this amusement park in 1973, the same year I had visited the Park with my 4th Grade Class on a Summer field Trip. Supposedly only a 'TREE" remains from the Park somewhere around KNOTT Ave. & Beech St. I dont remember Much about "Mission: Magic" TV show..But I do recall another Magic Themed Saturday kids TV show ..called "Lidsville" starring Comedic actor Charles Neilson Reilly & Butch Patrick (from "the Munsters" fame), a few yrs. earlier.

This is absolutely fantastic. So much fun to watch. I loved Avery - especially on Match Game. He was such a beautiful soul. Is this the entire show?

Batman appears, everyone cheers. He opens his mouth, everyone realizes it's not Adam West, hissing sound you hear is the crowd deflating.

Wow! look at Springfield! He's like different person! A beautiful longhaired boy with a pretty accent. Never been a Rick Springfield fan but for this early version...me likies! I dubbed him "Magick Springfield" to differentiate from the "Jessies Girl"/"General Hospital"/"Caifornication guest star" guy. I'm REALLY weird.
