Vs. is a PlayStation video game developed by Polygon Magic and published by THQ in 1997. The game, a 3D fighter, features 20 polygonal, gang-based characters (designed by former Marvel Comics artist Kurtis Fujita) brawling in a two-dimensional environment. Players select different members of each gang to fight rival gangs on their respective turfs. The title is a port and an American localized version of Fighters' Impact, which was released only on the Japanese PlayStation and in Japanese arcades. (Fighters Impact was originally developed by Taito in conjunction with Polygon Magic, with a gameplay similar to Virtua Fighter and it's main selling points the unique combo system that Vs. doesn't use and the different fighting styles per character. The ost is also really good)

Actually these designs were so well liked they were back-ported to Japan and became the heroes of Slap Happy Rhythm Busters...seriously. SHRB is the Japan-only sequel to this US-only butchering of a Japan-only game. If nothing else I really love the main girl with the underboob and the over-underwear.
This is another game where it really would have helped if someone had known the history of the game. Not that it would have changed anyone's opinion of it, but because it is one of those games that was completely rebranded for its Western release. THQ hired a Marvel Comics artist to design an entirely new roster for the more standard Japanese fighting game Fighters' Impact.

Seeing how much Polygon Magic improved from this game to Slap Happy Rhythm Busters is pretty crazy. Especially the character redesigns for Mia and Oleg.

I expect nothing but quality from a fighting game developed by people who made the totally not creepy decision to sexualize one of their own daughters in the game.
So this is an Americal localized version of the Japanese game Fighter's Impact. Basically, they changed character designs to fit a Western audience. These new designs were made by Kurtis Fujita, a former Marvel artist. As to why a lot of characters play the same, in the original there where less characters but each had three styles,
