great video/tribute video... loved seeing the wall of honor (work in progress) for your Grandfather... easy to see how and what a large impact he had on your life... I am sure he (as well as your dad) are smiling and beaming with pride at you from heaven! have a great weekend.

The dust coming off your floor from the concrete surface breaking down, can be stoped by sealing it. you can get oil or water base sealer that will stop the topping of the concrete from breaking down and putting a dust cloud in the shop. Thompson's water seal worked for our shop floor. It also helps with oil and dirt clean up.

Good start for "The Smoker". Built one using a 125 gallon butane tank and made a offset square firebox out of 1/4" plate 30" X 30" X 24" so I could use the 'long cut' wood. Works great and have cooked up to 8 briskets at one time. Would attach a pic if I could.Enjoy the build and then cooking with it.

1. Seal your concrete floor, in the walkways only. (Dust) 2. There are/should be near HEPA filters for your RIGID shop vac, there are/should be fine foam sock that goes over your standard filter. There, now go cook us somethin... LOL Thanks for sharing!

Hi Adam, if you wouldnt mind me passing on a little experience to you on the dust issues. If you get some cement sealer or something like a Unibond adhesive and floor sealer, you simply water it down 50/50, vacuum your floors as you have done and soak the floor with the sealer. It will dry clear and you will not have any further dust issues. Be sure to get under your benches too. You should do this before you paint the floor if you intend to. I have treated my floor like this and its been fine.

Hi Adam Thanks for the video. WRT the shop vac - you can get a bag filter for that model so most of the stuff you pick up will stay in the bag which will help prevent the filter element from getting plugged which in turn is hard on the motor. The bags work really well. Rod

On the vacuum, they make sponge foam sleeves that fit over fine filter that really help. As to your floors, they look like a good cantidate for epoxy garage floor paint. I used some on a problematic floor at a remote transmitter site and it really made a difference.

HEY! Adam, The reason you've got that dust problem, is because when the concrete was put down, they didn't put a sealer on top of it and he cement just turns to powder. Really bad for the machines!!! Get a 10Gal can of concrete sealer from a DIY store and just paint it on with a mop. It'll soak right into the concrete surface and you'll never get the dust problem again. All the best to you... Great video as usual! Thanks from across the pond in the UK. Jules.

When I did my joinery and cabinet making apprenticeship back in the early 1960's, the best we had for an anti-fatigue mat was timber slats about 1/2 inch by 2 inch 1/2 inch apart nailed on the same size cross slats about every 12 inches but they did the job and kept you off the cold concrete floor. Ps, they were great for tripping over too.

Might be a good idea to slap a layer of floor paint on the concrete - it makes a heck of a difference to the dust level. You might also do well to put together a cyclone dust collector system to keep the majority of the dust out of the motor. For the office picture display, maybe get a large digital photo frame, and scan all the pictures then set it to display them and change every few minutes. That's efficient use of wall space, and the originals won't fade with sunlight, etc.

That concrete dust is really fine. I think once you go over the floor a few times it'll lighten up some, easing the burden on the filter. That mat looked nice. Gotta love a left handed drill bit! Thanks.

if you go to a janitorial shop you can get a corlon or corlar filter for your vacuum. they are a bag that drops in the camister that works with your original filter. it's for very fine dust. that dust will eventualy overheat and burn the motor. should be about $20 or $30. Nice display. Good luck.
@boelwerkr

An easy and cheap way to make your filter temporally finer is to put a wet towel around the filter. The water will help collecting the really fine particles. And i think it would be a good idea to seal the walkways with a cheap spray-on water based sealant. I's basically a plastic dissolved in water.

There are fine dust HEPA filters for drywall dust. And if you use a bag along with the filter it works a lot better. After you get the floor clean, you might want to apply a sealer or paint to keep the concrete from being so dusty.

I'm sure you'll agree with me that you're lucky Ave is not your neighbour - he would have ripped your shopvac to pieces to test it before you could switch it on, and crushed your mat in his press to test it's resilience, before you could even lay it on the floor.

Adam, you need to seal the surface of the concrete to keep that dust contained. A little floor wax with the addition of some fine sharp sand while it is wet will give you a non slip surface if you get any oil on it. The other option is a HEPA filter for the vacuum.

Propane tanks have been used to build barbecue smokers. One drawback is the thinness of the metal will allow a lot of heat loss. That being said you will have a large smoker without the weight of heavy wall pipe. I will be looking forward to the build.

Beautiful cabinet Adam. And with granddad's wall you show your respect, well done man. I did not read all of the comment about your newly acquired propane tank but you can also create a "gassafe" atmosphere by purging the tank with nitrogen, in that case it will be inert.

Adam, have you thought about painting those shop floors? I know it's cumbersum, I just did it myself, but it sure is worth the week that it'll take for everything to get painted and dry. I painted my shop floor using a two part concrete paint and it was just what I needed. It puts a nice and semi shiny surface that's easy to sweep up chips from etc. Haven't painted everything yet, but the parts that I have painted sure was worth the trouble.

You can stop the concrete from decaying with a cheap sealer. Mop & Glow. yes that's right. Put it on in light coats with a damp mop. After a few coats it will seal it up without making it slick.
@mattkeagy9668
@mattkeagy9668 8 лет назад
Hey Adam.....I was watching your vid & was thinking to myself "he really needs a bag in that vacuum before he gets the motor full of concrete dust" and about 20 seconds later you showed the motor casing with dust in it. I have 2 vacs at home that get used for sucking up ash, which is even finer than concrete dust. I also have 3 or 4 vacs at work that suck up fine ceramic dust & super-fine stainless steel "powder" that gets created in our kilns. I have the regular "good 'ol fashioned" shop vac bags in all of the vacs and every one looks & operates like brand new. I think the newest vac we have is about 8 years old, and with daily use it still looks like it just came out of the box. The bags can be purchased just about anywhere......Lowes, Home Depot, Motion Ind, MSC, Grainger.....etc. They're pretty generic, and not very expensive at all. They'll keep your expensive vac filters looking like new even with fine dust being sucked up, and the best part is there is no mess or extra cleaning required when emptying your vac. Just pull out the full bag & throw it in the garbage. Put a new bag in & you're ready to roll.

His floor doesn't need sealing. Just a good cleaning. Considering the machine oil spilled the sealer would not adhere to the concrete. If sealed the sealer could only be applied around the machinery. Maintenance and cleaning are the answer.

Enjoyed seeing the photo of the USS Lexington. I remember fishing for grouper in the area next to where it was docked, around 1986. That was before anyone worried about bombs in small boats (USS Cole incident was years later) and no one worried when we puttered in and started fishing. My father's ashes were committed to the deep (military funeral) off the deck of the Lexington (and he has a memorial at Fort Barancas Cemetery). So yeah, a lot of memories flooded back when I saw that.

Hey Adam my shop floor was the same as yours. It was so dusty you couldn't walk without making dust. I went to Lowes and got some Seal Krete Clear Seal Concrete Protective Sealer in Gloss. Swept and vacuumed the floor everywhere I could. Took a medium nap roller and put a good heavy coat down where I could get to. Did not move the machines. 2 hours later I re did and it cut the dust by 85% and you can sweap the floor now without dust. You may have to redo in a year or so. It cost about $22.00 a gallon.

I know that you have bought a new shop vac, however, IF you want to clean a concrete floor wiithout creating lots of dust, you can just use saw dust. Throw some saw dust on the ground, spray a little water on it and sweep away. No dust!! As an added bunus, it also acts a a soak for any spille fluids too. Nice thing is, its recyclable too. Use it again and again. Keep up the great videos and G'day from downunder.

There should be filter accessories that are washable. (mine is a Shop Vac) Also, don't be afraid to use the 'brush' style floor attachment. You'll find it easier to then make floor passes. The plastic flat bottom one is generally for wet conditions. That anti-fatigue mat is AWESOME. I really like the yellow safety lines too. I find the contrast helpful (believe it or not). Worth every penny. Fantastic display case find. Brass theme metal frame is perfect given your machine shop life. But now, you may wind up making a twin to it - in your shop! :-) Those V-Blocks at your work shop. I don't even wanna know what those weigh! How on earth do you square those puppies up on the table. Use a lifting crane to get them on the table? I'm off to the race track.

Consider adding a vacuum line of 1 1/2" plastic domestic drain pipe that runs along the three populated sides of the entire workshop at ceiling height and exits through the wall, to connect to the Ridgid Vac unit housed under the roofed extension on the other side, near a power point, switched via an RF remote socket, available from Maplins here in the UK. (Similar devices probably supplied via Radio Shack or Wallmart?) Drop pipes, perhaps 1 1/4, tee'd off of the high mounted vacuum line at each work area/station, terminate in a small baffled plastic or metal tank or old paint pot that has a grommeted opening into which, after lifting a sealing flap, your flexible hose is inserted. The RF transmitter, that is, incidentally, capable of switching 16 sockets, can be attached to the hose permanently, turning on or off the Ridgid unit as you move around the workshop from one station to another as required, carrying only the flexi hose and extension. The tanks, floor or wall mounted, use the baffles to interrupt the airflow, causing entrapment of heavier items and fluids, that can then be opened and cleaned as necessary. John Greenwood
