Saturday Night Special 134: Turning & Threading, Hackmaster Mag Back Indicator, Shaft Work

This week is another mix-up of weekly videos I have taken. I finish off the turning and threading on the toe adjuster, then mill the hex using a 5C collet block. We also have some cool viewer mail, including another nice hand made tool for The Hackmaster! Also in the mix is a shaft I was working on this week, and last weekends smoking!

Hi Adam, the gun oil is from Clements Firearms in Enid,OK. They have some videos up on RU-vid under the same name. Dustin and Jade are really great people. They have a machine shop called Pioneer Precision Machine also. I use that oil for a lot of my indicators and tooling at work. I've used it to drill and tap too. It doesn't get sticky when it's hot like some of the other oils. Glad you got the package and thank you for the videos

Hey Adam, these videos are getting better and better man! Looks like you have reason to start working on some barbecue sauce! That brisket looked delicious! I wanted to say thanks man. You probably hear endless praise. I have honestly gained so much knowledge from you that it has taken my skills to a higher level. Thanks brother.

Awesome! My little job hit three of your big machines. So cool to see it in the Victor today and then the Do All that followed being in your families famous Monarch last week. The buffing - deburring wheel you have is sweet. Now I want one for my 8" grinder. Gotta find a supplier up here. Superb work as always. With all the smooth and shiny polishing you did, it'll improve the race car aerodynamics and make me faster to win! But yeah, we do bang these suckers up. That magnet base for the indicator is fantastic. Smart engineering by your buddy. By the way, Spanner is a English (British) term open and box end bolt and nut tools. It was the American's that came up with the term Wrench. Somehow, Canada got sucked up into the term Wrench - living next to the most powerful nation in the world may have something to do with it... But for our grandparents, often ex-pats from the United Kingdom, the term they used remained spanner. Thanks Adam!!!! Gotta go fire up my BBQ ....

Great presentation. Believe you will find the 0.75/TPI formula only applies when using a threading tool with a flat on its end with a width of 1/8 pitch. When using a sharp vee (no flat) an additional 0.125/TPI must be added to the compound movement. Both are for the US National Form with a 30 deg. compound offset. In the case of your 18 TPI this amounts to 0.007 in. So, I use 0.875/TPI as I use sharp vee threading tool. Obviously this is more important for course threads. Of course one normally makes a test fit with a nut.

In the UK: Spanner = open end or ring spanner, or box spanner (made of a tube with flattened sides on the ends to fit the nuts) Wrench = generally an adjustable wrench (slip joint, F style, 'monkey' wrench / pipe wrench) Socket = The ends that go on a ratchet spanner :D
@Ogma3bandcamp

Don't forget the daddy of all wrenches, the Stilson. Slip joint wrench aka 'plumbers pliers'.

Hi Adam ! I like your videos. I'm not a professional machinist, so I have a a couple of question regarding tools you use at work. I can see at 32:00 on your video that there is your name on the tool holder. At work, are you asked to buy the tools you use ? Does the company give you an allowance to buy tools every year ? Do you invest out of your own pocket ? How about consumables (inserts) ? It would be nice if you could answer this question in a video, as I'm sure other people would be interested in hearing the answer. Thanks for your videos Adam, it is so nice to see you at work. Particularly I like how you try to get the most out of your machines. Take care ! Xavier

Adam, Enjoyable as always. Just a note on the sound in this video. I don't really do this much, but this morning my family is away so I hooked up my notebook to my big TV and good sound system At around 15 and a half minutes when you were showing the threading from the tailstock of the lathe, my subwoofer started going a bit nuts. There's some kind of low frequency vibration coming through that I guess I'd never hear through computer speakers and it wouldn't surprise me too much if it's there in many videos. While I'm a bit of a low frequency nut in general, it wasn't really adding to the experience.
@Abom79

I think that was the air blowing on the mic from the ac unit. Sorry.

check that dial indicator with the magnets carefully. (6:30 into the video.) If it has those strong rare earth magnets on it there is a chance that the magnetic field influences the measurement mechanism inside the indicator leading to misreadings.
@adamturney3890
@adamturney3890 8 лет назад
Yeah some older ones are susceptible to magnetic interference. Most, not all, newer indicators are manufactured with that in mind and it doesnt effect them, as much anyway.
@ExtantFrodo2
@ExtantFrodo2 8 лет назад
That's good to know. Still I would not want to risk that I have the wrong kind by sticking a magnet on it. Demagnetizing can rarely be done thoroughly and completely.

Here's an idea. How about a tee shirt that pays homage to all the "makers" on RU-vid that you have stickers for on your "wall of fame". Sort of the tee shirt analogy to a race car that has all those sponsor's logos on them. The tee would feature these stickers (art) on it like a collage. Make sure the tee has a pocket! :) You'd probably have to get permission from the people involved, but you could "bribe" them with a free/low-cost sample!!

I have a question... would you change cnmg inserts used in the face mill and the RPM when changing from 4130 Steel to Aluminum? I understand that given how light these cuts are, that it's maybe not a big deal, but for a bigger cut, is that something you would then plan for the Op?

You can cut the aluminum with them, but they arent ideal. best to change them to something with a more positive chip breaker action.

@mattmanyam
@mattmanyam 6 лет назад
I know this is late... The lead screw threads are the "guide path". As long as you time the engagement if the half-nut into the threads, it will follow the same path. The thread dial is your tell-tale as to where the lead screw is in its rotation.
