We riise our ornamental pheasants by incubator as their mums have no success, squash them, leave them outside when shld be back in shelter etc. What was yr comment again please re incubtor-raised poults please? I cldn't catch it clearly enough.
Sadly some pheasants make poor (captive bird) parents and many experienced breeders have learnt that these species require artificially incubation. I don't own an incubator as, in the past, when I have had to use artificial means I have used a "broody chicken" which make excellent, attentive parents. Tragopans are generally good parents and will sit and then hatch and rear there young with no problems, however, I do have a new, young Temmincks female which lays eggs but does not want to sit! She seems the exception and this proves that there are no general rules. Regarding squashing, I think sadly this is often a chick dying through a problem but being found where the female has brooded other chicks, its rare for a female bird to be so clumsy to squash a chick. I agree it is very distressing to loose young birds that are in your care
